    Best Fish???

Now I'm originally a western boy, so if it ain't beef I'm really out of my comfort zone but my wife assures me that Pickerel is the best.  Thoughts???  (hope I'm not opening a can of worms....) ;)

    Re: Best Fish???

My favorites have always been salmon, mahi mahi, and a good sea bass.  But then I don't really eat a lot of fish, so I'm sure there are a lot of kinds I haven't tried yet.

Orange ruffy is my favourite, but it's expensive so I don't get it often.

    Re: Best Fish???

I only like fish with exoskeletons.  And a crunchy breading counts as an exoskeleton.

OK scratch that, cause I like Tilapia and cooked in a great sauce, alaskan pollock works too.  For me.  And my kids, who won't eat anything if it tastes remotely like fish.  I recognize that this makes me pretty plebian when it comes to fish.  I can't even swallow salmon.  Just can't.  (well, a friend once made me some Atlantic Salmon, which I could tolerate, mostly cause it didn't taste much like salmon)

But ultimately, my preference is to have to eat my "fish" with crackers and dip the pieces in drawn butter. Mmmmmmmmmmm.

I like any fish that comes wrapped in a sushi roll. Drool Basically, I like most fresh fish, but it is sometimes a craving/aversion thing with me. I don't tolerate some shell fish very well. Mussles are now out of my diet completely. A lovely sauce and bed of brown rice goes a long way.

    Re: Best Fish???

There aren't many kinds I don't like, so long as they're fresh!  Trout's awesome, salmon was made for the grill, and for something affordable but still delectable, tilapia's great.  Since getting into GBS and learning about the the loss of the cod fishery, I tend to go by the Seafood Choices Alliance list of renewable/safe fish choices - so much is fished illegally or unsustainably that I'm glad somebody's keeping track of it!

Well, it's not a fish, but I figured it lived in the ocean so it was fair game. Lobster!!!! Broiled with garlic and butter. Yummmm! Or, scallops, sautéed in butter, garlic and white wine. Double yummmm!
Of course then someone that loves you needs to drive you to the emergence room so that you can have your arteries clean out from all the cholesterol. And it was worth every bite! Drool

Favourite fish... there isn't any kind of fish or shellfish I don't like, though I've never tried raw oysters, only smoked.  The fish I most look forward to, apart from good old British Fish'n'ChipsSmile, is any flatfish, cooked in breadcrumbs.  We catch them ourselves sometimes, all wading in line in the dark in a muddy tidal creek with the moon just right and the tide almost on the turn. We shuffle along and feel for the flatties in the mud with our toes, then wrestle them into sacks tied around our waists.  It's a Kentish tradition called 'griping'. No wonder I get back trouble.  The fish are Flounder, none better.

    Re: Best Fish???

I'm a salmon girl - grew up in a Pacific Northwest town whose centerpiece was a salmon hatchery, so you know where we all took school field trips. Wink  It's yummy when rubbed with some cumin and oregano and grilled.  But sadly, my hubby is not a salmon fan, so we don't have it that often.  And of course, as others have mentioned, tilapia is inexpensive, and mild enough to take a variety of sauces and flavors.  We just had a yummy Tilapia Piccata the other Friday.  Just avoid the lutefisk!  (A Scandinavian-American tradition, cod that's been freeze-dried, then soaked in lye to reconstitute it, aptly described as "fish jello"! Ick! )

Oh yeah - SHELLFISH!  Nina, let me tell you, once you try the raw oyster there is no going back!  A little horseradish, maybe a little tabasco lovin, throw it back, wash, rinse, repeat.  Maybe chase it with a good ol' Canadian Caesar... that is the taste of summer for me.

    Re: Best Fish???

Lobster's my all-time favorite!  Nina, "griping" does sound like fun, but like you, I have the sort of back that would be doing plenty of griping the next day.

And you who are worried about all that butter clogging up your arteries - have a glass of wine with your dinner!

    Love, Columbine
