    Nova Scotia Genealogy

I'm hoping someone here can help or at least provide some tips. I'm trying to track down information on my great great grandfather, Samuel Robertson. I know that he and his family were living in the Brantford area during the 1901 census, but according to my grandmother they were living in Ship Harbour when my great grandmother was born in 1888. I can't officially link them to the province and cannot seem to find the 1891 census to see where they were. Not sure where to go next. Anyone have any luck with this type of search? Thanks!

Churches in the area where you think they were living. These are some of the best records for Geneology and at east my church does searches daily. If that does nto work contact the Mormons in the area. they have records on everyone as it is part of their religion that everyone should have acess to that info... and they may have someone who could help you out.

Thanks. I have emailed the archivist for the church, we'll see what happens. There is a ton of info out there, it's just hard to access it from a distance.

    Re: Nova Scotia Genealogy

I was using Ancestry.ca for a while, and found a family tree on One World Family Tree that went back to 1500 in Scotland. I was able to verify 3 generations of it using the information available at the time in Ancestry.ca.

Then I couldn't do much from here, as the family tree shows they lived in Quebec for two generations, and before that in Nova Scotia. I'll have to try again now that there's more information available.

Thanks! Is there any way to access any of this information without paying?

Anyone on here live near Ship Harbour? I'm wondering if there is/was a presbyterian church in the area?

    Re: Nova Scotia Genealogy

You can access some immigration records for free (I found my great-grandfather that way) and you can access some census records on the Government of Canada website. It's a little hit and miss, because I imagine it's all input by hand, and that can take a bit of time.

Thanks. It looks as though I have hit a wall, I may have to take a trip to Ship Harbour to try and track church records. We'll see!

     this site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nshalifa/Churches.htm

    gave me this info.

Saint Stephen's is in Ships Harbour it's an Anglican church and your local parish should be able to help you get the address.

This one is Roman Catholic. and the info was on the above site.

    Hope that helps

Thanks Andi! I have now been able to identify my great great great great great great grandfather. We're going to add a side trip to Ship Harbour and other places along the Marine Drive to our NS/CB trip this summer.
