Futie, I'm looking for a song, and methinks it's called "Grace". It was a lovely ballad, or at least that's how the Navigators sang it when they were here in Ontario last month.

    Know it?

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

I'm not sure, Cory Tetford had a song or album called Grace, I'm not totally up on Tetford. I'm sure if Missy reads this she'll know. Smile

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

The title track to Cory's solo CD is called Grace but it's a slow kind of gospel number and I can't imagine the Navigators doing a cover of it.

Can you remember any of the words to it Sandy?

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

If anyone wants a good sample of Newfoundland traditional music, I'd highly recommend the CD's "Our Songs" Vol. 1 and 2 put out by Avondale Music in 2004(Vol 1) and 2005 (Vol 2).

A very good site to learn about Newfoundland music is:
    http://www.wtv-zone.com/phyrst/audio/nfld/

You have samples in form of midi files, lyrics by title, first line and artist along with some tabs and a little history of the tune.

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

I have the Cory Tetford cd, and no it's not the song I'm thinking of. I had a fair number of pints so the lyrics arent' coming to me. In fact when I try to pull something together, I end up with Sam Hall stuck in me head.

I'm beginning to wonder if Fred pulled a GBS and changed the name of the song. Either that or it's something they've just written.

Futie and Ariel, thanks for the links. Always good to have resources.

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

HIghly recommend ( for ages now Smile) The Government Rams, with members of both the above bands on board. One of my favorite cd's. Alan sings back up on one track ( tho I can't hear him) Any solo material by members of both bands is great stuff too!
I always mention Jim Fidler as well. http://www.jimfidler.com/ Great musician, range from reggae to NFLD to celtic, great producer. Hi latest cd Midnight Rover is one of may faves out this year. For GBS types who are recently new to GBS, Jim has credit on their first cd and was a member of Rankin Street with Sean, Darrell and Bob. His music is awesome, and for GBS completists out there, nice to have. Smile Smile
Suggest big time everyone check out the Ryan's Fancy link in my sig. Smile The Led Zepplin of NFLD bands. Smile

    I do! Me, over here!

Freds is my personal favourite place to shop for CDs. Large selection of Newfoundland music, and friendly people. Big Grin

Bran - Have you checked out Brothers in Stereo? I haven't been able to order their CD, but I've heard some of their stuff and it's quite enjoyable.

And we wake up in the breakdown of the things we never thought we could be...

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

I love Fred's too! I like both the Punters and Brothers in Stereo. Do the Brothers have a new album out? I've heard a song on the radio by them a few times called "Little Hitchhiker" and it's not on their first album.
I'm going to have to get the 8-Track Favourites CD. I've seen them now a couple of times and they are great. Larry Foley and Patrick Moran from the Punters, and Sandy Morris are in the 8tracks as well as another Ledrew cousin. If you like 70's country music (Glen Campbell, Ronnie Milsap, etc.) you'll like the 8 tracks.

Re: T learn about/buy NFLD music....

    Brothers in Stereo
    The 8-Track Favourites

Two more of my clients. Wink 'Little Hitchiker' will be on the next BIS CD but there are no current plans for recording. The track was recorded for the 2005 CMW National Songwriting competition. They also won the regional portion of the contest in 2004 with 'Burned Out the Flash'. The song will be on Andrew's upcoming first solo disc, titled Ladies Lookout, which will be released with a show on November 24th (Amanda you should go to this while you're here). If you like Brothers in Stereo you'll really enjoy this disc. We'll have his website up in a few weeks with some sound clips, etc.

I've got 4 full sample tracks on the 8-Tracks website too. Works as long as you've got Flash installed. The 8-Tracks are playing at The Ship Pub on Nov 26th so it's going to be a good weekend.

btw, The 8-Tracks are all four members of The Punters (Larry, Pat, George Morgan and Barry Hillier), Sandy Morris and Chris LeDrew (one of the Brothers in Stereo).
