Chords for The Hard and The Easy

I had posted these chords to Captain Kidd a few weeks ago in another "Music Room", after hearing the song on the GBS Myspace.com site... it had been years since GBS did a song that inspired me to grab my guitar and strum along, and that felt good! The chords are easy, but it's the tempo that's challenging - I'd forgotten how fast these guys strum! Anyways, the band sings this song in the key of F, so you need to slap a capo on the third fret of your guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, whatever, and play the song in D, as shown below.

    Captain Kidd
Capo 3 for key of F

    My (D)name is (A)Captain (D)Kidd as I sailed, as I (A)sailed
    Oh my (D)name is (A)Captain (D)Kidd as I (A)sailed
    My (G)name is Captain Kidd and God's (D)law I did (A)forbid,
    And most (D)wickedly I (G)did (A)as I (D)sailed.

Here's the basic chord pattern for the song (each chord letter gets two beats except when two are hyphenated, they each get one beat). The chords for the verses are the same as the first half of the chorus, except you repeat them twice.

    Chorus:
    D-A D D A
    D-A D A A
    G G D A A
    D G-A D D

    Verse:
    D-A D D A
    D-A D A A
    D-A D D A
    D-A D A A

Then play the chorus again, then another verse, and so on... but listen for the changes at the beginning and end of the instrumental break because they drop a measure of D in both spots, perhaps to keep the dancers on their toes! Listen to Murray's bass to keep the structure of the song and it should make sense. At the end of the last chorus, you repeat D G-A a few times before you play the final D.

Hope this helps! I'll be posting a few more THTE songs that I've already worked out, then I'll be happy to take requests.

Re: Chords for The Hard and The Easy

The Old Polina is really fun to sing, so I had to figure out the chords. This song is in Eb, so put your capo on the first fret to play along with GBS.

    The Old Polina
Capo 1 for key of Eb

    Chorus:
For the (D)wind was on her quarter, the (G)engine's working free,
    There's (A)not another whaler that (A)sails the (G)Arctic (D)sea,
Can (D)beat the Old Polina, you (G)need not try my sons,
    We (A)challenged all both (G)great and small from (A)Dundee (G)to St. (D)John's.

All the verses are the same as the chorus. The basic chord pattern goes like this (each chord letter gets four beats, except when two are hyphenated they each get two beats, and when you see AG it means that A and G each get one beat):

    D G A AG-D
    D G A-G AG-D

    Hope this helps!

Re: Chords for The Hard and The Easy

Graceful and Charming is sung in A, but it's easier to play in G, so put your capo on the second fret. In Newfoundland the song is played as a waltz, however, the GBS version starts in moderate 2/2 time, then changes to a 3/4 waltz. Here's the basic chord pattern for the song (each chord letter gets two bars of two beats (three beats for the waltz) except when two are hyphenated, they each get one bar).

    Graceful and Charming (Sweet Forget-Me-Not)
Capo 2 for key of A

    G G C G
    C G-Em A D
    G G C G
    C G-Em C-D G(-D)

If that didn't make sense, here's where the chords go in the first line of the chorus, you should be able to figure out the rest from here:
    She's (G)graceful and she's (G)charming like the (C)lilies in the (G)pond....

That's all for now... until I jot down the other songs that are still in my head!

hey thought id add on, there is some great music on this friggin album

charlie horse - very paddy murphy-ish, except this one is in G
so pretty simple and same through the whole thing
    G - C - G
    G - A - D
    G - C - G
    G - CD - G

Re: Chords for The Hard and The Easy

Awesome! Thanks for posting these, folks! I started working on these a couple weeks ago and never got around to finishing.

Slightly off-topic...OT from TH&TE at least...I figured out the harmonic chords to Sea of No Cares, is anyone interested in those?

Re: Chords for The Hard and The Easy

    Hey Everyone,

I just took these from the DVD, they may not be accurate.

If these don't line up for you try The Mermaid

The Mermaid as sung by Great Big Sea
    D G D
Well I was a lad in a fishing town, me old man said to me
    Bm Em A
You can spend your life, your jolly life just sailing on the sea
    D G F#m
You can search the world for pretty girls, ‘til your eyes are weak and dim
    G D Bm G A D
But don't go searching for a mermaid son, if you don't know how to swim

    Chorus
    G D G D
Cause her hair was green as seaweed, her skin was blue and pale
    G D G D
Her face it was a work of art, I love that girl with all my heart
    G D Bm G A D
But I only like the upper part I did not like the tail.

    D G D
I signed onto a sailing ship, my very first day at sea,
    Bm Em A
I seen the mermaid in the waves a-reaching out to me
    D G F#m
Come live with me in the sea, said she down on the ocean floor
    G D Bm G A D
And I'll show you a million wondrous things you've never seen before

    D G D
So over I jumped and she pulled me down, down to her seaweed bed
    Bm Em A
And a pillow made of a tortoise shell she placed beneath my head
    D G F#m
She fed me shrimp and caviar upon the silver dish
    G D Bm G A D
From her head to her waist was just my taste, but the rest of her was a fish

    Chorus
    D G D
But then one day she swam away, so I sang to the clams and the whales
    Bm Em A
Oh, how I miss her seaweed hair and the silver shine of her scales
    D G F#m
But then her sister, she swam by, it set my heart a whirl
    G D Bm G A D
Cause her upper part was an ugly fish, but her bottom part was a girl

    Chorus (different)
    G D G D
Yes her hair was green as seaweed her skin was blue and pale
    G D G D
Her legs they are a work of art, I love that girl with all my heart
    G D Bm G A D
And I don't give a damn ‘bout the upper part, cause that's how I gets my tail.

(Spoken) Come here me little darlin'. Show me your fins. Here fishy, fishy, fishy. Come here a minute darlin'. Come here my ????? Show me a fin

    Cheers,

    Gord

The chords are simply awsome. Thanks for sharing them, everyone! I haven't the patience to sort them all out myself.

Re: Chords for The Hard and The Easy

Sorry for the delay, Delaney!! I kept forgetting to bring my chord book to work. But now I'm online at home. Yay!

Thanks to Fran's GBS On the Prairies site for having the chords to this song in the first place, so I could figure out the harmony.

Ok, HARMONIC CHORDS (Sean's part) to Sea of No Cares:

This is the rhythm guitar, the strumming pattern is slightly different from Alan's lead guitar part. For the most part it's a steady strum on the quarter notes straight through.

    Guitar 2: Capo 5th fret
    INTRO: C G C G C G D
    VERSE:

    (C)When you're in(G)love, there's no time and no (G)space
    There's a (C)permanent (G)smile on your (D)face
    Your (C)friends all com(G)plain that you're going in(G)sane
    But the (C)truth is (G)they're just a(D)fraid
    CHORUS:
    (Em)Hey, (D)hey, (C)hey some(G)where (you threw)
    (C) You threw your fear in the (G)sea of no (D)cares
    And (Em)hey, (D)hey (C)hey some(G)where (you threw)
    (C) You threw your fear in the (G)sea of no (D)cares

play intro 1x into 2nd verse

    BRIDGE:
    (C) Let yourself go with the (D)tide
    (C) There's an angel by your (D)side
    To(C)niiiiii(D)iiii(C)ight

INTRO 2x, "Throw your fear in the sea"

INTRO is OUTRO, "You threw your fear in the sea" 2x

    Enjoy!

Re: Chords for The Hard and The Easy

Wow, I've been searching the net for a week (ever since I picked up the new CD/DVD) for the latest guitar tabs on GBS. THANK YOU!!!

Most of the tunes are too quick for me
as I'm just learing guitar (self taught)

If anyone has tabs for Tickle Cove Pond, it would be a huge help. It's more my pace geetar

While watching the DVD I tried to figure it out,but Alan's fretting hand is often blocked by his coffee mug baffled

at the start I can almost make out
    a series of G's and D's ,
just not sure about whats in between,
    ... maybe a Asus? and/or Cadd9 baffled
    then back to G

the chorus appears to be similar

    Also during the sequence(below),
I'm totally lost at which chords are used

    the (_)hard and the (_)easy
    we (_)take as they (_)come
    and (_)when ponds freeze(_) over
    we (_)shorten our (_)run

can some one help a n00bie out??
