    A beautiful moment in LA

I posted my review on the Upcoming shows, but I forgot to mention this.

At the second encore, Bob started to sing "come and I will sing you" and Alan signaled us the crowed to sing back the chorus, and I bealive every on that theater sang back the "what will you sing me" the look on Bob's face was of pure joy. What a beautifull and amazing moment!!

    Saludos!!

    The LA Experience

My wife and I's first GBS experience was Feb 15 at the El Rey theatre in LA. Having been warned that the show would start on time and seeing an 8 pm "start time" on our "tickets" (that is, the printed receipt that was emailed to us), my wife and I arrived about 5:45, only to see about eight people in line and the theatre lights still dark. We parked and walked along the dreary "Miracle Mile", checked out the bus parked on a nearby side street, went into the grocery store for a bit, before heading back to the theatre and queing up. Once we got there, we got in line behind some GBS "lifers" who were seeing something like their fifth show in five days. They had been in SF, Portland and Seattle and were heading off towards AZ, UT and CO. They kept the line entertaining as we waited, quickly finding out that the show was not starting at 8, but rather 9. Ugh.

Still, we were in the first dozen or so in line, and the line quickly grew around the corner. We became greatful that we were there early. The doors opened at 8, we got in, bought my copy of "Up" to complete my GBS CD collection adn we set up stage Murray-Alan, providing us with a good view of Sean's bodrhan playing. The only people really bummed were the folks in the semi-circle behind me that were blocked out by my 6-6 frame. (Sorry, folks).

The concert was excellent, though it did notice that it seemed to take a while for the guys to capture the crowd's attention. At one point during a lull I noticed a din of conversation that I wished would shut up, but once the music came on, it was drowned out.

Though the drums were a bit loud, the overall balance of the acoustic set was really good. What struck me was the versitility of each performer, as they seemed to switch effortlessly between instruments. The banter was fun and good natured. The intro to Gideon Brown was funny and it was amusing to watch Alan chuckle his way through it.

What was also fun was to people watch. The guys all had good stage presence and seemed to make a connection with the hard-core fans up front. The standing only venue was a good choice as it allowed the big fans to move closer, and the others to gradually make their way up.

The second set was strong, with a better sound balance. No complaint on the choice of songs. With such a wide variety to choose from, it is hard to go wrong. Still, I was impressed with Sean's live range. Personally, I think they ought to let Murray sing a song. He seems to have a strong bass voice. Maybe next tour. Bob was interesting to watch play. His eyes would get really big before every verse of "Come and I will Sing you."

Reading Alan's From the road, it was neat to see that the band felt that they had finally overcome LA. As for his complaints about finding a decent pint after the gig, well, all I can say is that they are just playing in the wrong places. Next time you come to LA, get out of the Westside. Hope to see you again soon.
