Great big fun
ENTERTAINMENT: Great Big Sea bringing east coast fun to Sarnia
Posted By TARA HAGAN, THE OBSERVER
Alan Doyle can't wait to be back in Sarnia.
"We've had some pretty good hosts there," said one of the lead singers of Canadian Celtic band Great Big Sea.
The maritime rockers-- best known for performing energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs -- will perform at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre on Sept. 24.
The group last played here in 2003.
"We had a good time on stage there, and an even better time after," said Doyle, who even took in a Sting game while in town.
"We like different places for different reasons," said the native of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland. "Home is always fun."
"And I'd have to say Quebec City," he added. "It's the most beautiful place in North America."
The group -- which also includes members Bob Hallett and Sean McCann -- are fresh off their summer festival tour, preparing to embark on a tour of Ontario before heading to the U. S.
"We just had a big weekend in the states," said Doyle, noting crowds of 5,000 in Buffalo and Washington. "That's pretty big for us there."
The Juno Award nominated band will showcase songs from their ninth and latest studio album, "Fortune's Favourite," as well as some of their classic tunes -- incorporating their unique sounds of bouzouki, fiddle, banjo, accordion and whistles.
Great Big Sea was named "Entertainer of the Year" by the East Coast Music Awards every year between 1996 and 2000.
Doyle, who has covered everything in the entertainment business from producing to acting, said there's nothing quite like getting on stage with his fellow bandmates.
"It's all about doing what you love to do, and we still love it," he said. "It's my favourite thing; you get to sing songs you like, and it's just a good feeling."
Great Big Sea, with special guest, Jeremy Fisher, will perform at the SSEC on Sept. 24. Tickets are on sale at the SSEC Box Office, online at www.ssec.on.caor charge by phone at (519) 541- 1717
