Is this a typical Great Big Sea Show??

Saw them for the first time on Saturday at Stanley Park. Awesome music and great energy. Graet sound too.

    My bitch is this.

Drove like a bat out of hell the 50 or so miles to Stanley Park to be there at the 5:30 opening. Had to eat McD's Blah!

In the venue by 5:45.  no smoking/ no drinking... ok i can appreciate that.

Opening band "Skydiggers" comes on just before 8!!!??

Plays for 30 minutes or so... good music  funny as hell.... dances like me.

then nothing for 1/2 hour.   Finally a radio personality comes out and says "just be patient"

    15 minutes later.... the show!

Says they will be here until they get kicked out... they'll play all the songs.... and its over before 10

I dont mind paying $225 for a good show (4 tix), but less than 1 hour?

If this is typical GBS, then I'll stick to videos and CD's

    What say you?

Not a typical GBS show by any means. Usually they start on time ( or a reasonable time there after, like 15 minutes) and last 2-3 hours depending on the time the opener plays. Switch over between sets can take up to  20 minutes, depending on set up and how efficient the techs are. I've rarely seen a set by GBS that lasted less than an hour, hour and a half. Most are longer.  And I've been to a good many shows over the past 10 plus years.

They play longer when they have no opening act too.

I saw the set lists from both nights, though. They looked like they were normal length shows to me, approx 20 songs. That sounds like a proper concert to me.  CP&G only had 26 songs. How many songs were you expecting?

maybe it's the venue.... Stanley Park is along ways to go and the Malkin Bowl web site says nothing about the 5:30 start time on the tickets.

I just wanted a couple of hours of Great Big Sea I guess. Don't mind my complainin... it was a hell of a long day. 6am - 11:30pm before i got home.

again... the music was awesome... and hats off to Skydiggers

Not sure how exactly you are arriving at a one hour show.  Skydiggers wnet on at 7:00 not 8:00 and GBS went on at exactly 8:15  and finished up at 10:00 on the dot - that's an hour and 45 minutes according to my calculations, which is pretty much average for a show with an opener.  Personally, I have to say that Saturday evening's Stanley Park show had one of the best setlists that I have heard in a while and we completely enjoyed the evening.  I would agree that no matter how long a show might be, it's never long enough and you are always left wanting more.

I agree with Kim, and it was the same for the friday show. Skydiggers started at 7:00 (which is what the venue's website said was the show start time) and Great Big Sea went on at shortly after 8:15 both nights. And the radio person for the saturday show came on, said they would be on in a few minutes and then they barely played half of a GBS song over the speakers before the band came out.

Re: Is this a typical Great Big Sea Show??

I have not been to many other shows other than GBS over the last few years. I have to admit I always felt they were on the short side. Seems like about a 50 min set and a 20 min encore, so the duration of the show is about 10 min less then the  time music is being played. (If that makes any sense) and there is more than just a bit of banter, which I dont mind but it obviously cuts down on the actual music being played

You do hear about bands who actually play for close three hours, including  the encore, Makes for a 4  hour show. Dead shows were usually like that, but they would do a good 15 minutes of "SPACE JAM" each set. Some band members would leave the stage while others carried on, they would come back and the others would take a break. Gives every one a chance to come down a little! ;)

Jester  those were the days:  drums>>space>>...and off they'd go into Terrapin or something! And they NEVER used set lists...they just jammed!

On the GBS question, I think we can trust Kim's assesment of the Vancouver show set list - I'd call her one of the resident (or should that be transient, in her case?) experts! Travel
