Road trip from Niagara to "out 'round the bay"

    Hey all,

I'm heading out any day for another trip back home from Niagara to St. John's but this time (for the first time in years) I'm driving and taking my time. I expect to be gone for six weeks or so. I would love any suggestions all you other GBS fans might have for places to go, stay, eat...what to do and see and where to relax and catch a good time!

I was supposed to leave last month but I just had to wait until after the Toronto concert! What a great decision! So flying high from that and with my entire collection of Great Big Sea both on my ipod and sitting on my car visor I'm ready to go.

Where to stop...I'm waiting on you guys! Come on, Beat the drum!

If i were you my first (and likely last) stop would be at this pub in Niagara on the Lake whose name escapes me right now. The Fiancee and I ate there one day on a jaunt around the lake to the falls and it was the best pub ive been in on this side of the pond. I wanted to try a soup they had on special but i also wanted a meal and our waiter (great guy with a thick Irish accent) told me that it would be too much food but he would make me a smaller bowl to try it even though it wasnt on the menu and to top it all off he threw that in for free! Great beer and a fiddle and guitar playing live music finished it off...i wish i could remember the name of the place... ok i know this was no help at all because it might well be out of your way and even if it is on the way its likely 15 minutes from your house but...id stop for lunch and a beer after 15 minutes on the road...wouldn't everyone?

Sounds like it might have been the Irish Harp - a lovely pub near the park and the Pince of Wales hotel (a beautiful landmark often in pictures and postcards). Definitely worth a trip from Fonthill (let me know if you need a date) but yeah, a bit close to home for a road trip stop.

Justmee - are you driving over or under Lake Ontario?  There's not much in western NY but the rest of the trip east through the states has something to offer.  I've been advised to drive through Canada to the eastern end of the lake, then cross into the States to Maine as a quicker route to the coast.  However, that bypasses Montreal, Quebec City and the eastern townships, which are also reputed to be beautiful, and if you're taking your time you may not mind the slower route. I've never managed the trip but have dreamed of and half-planned one for years.  Mind if I pretend I'm tagging along?
