My daughter gives up easily on things, often doesn't even want to try unless she knows she can already do something. She pretty well hasn't ridden her bike the last 2 summers. No interested in learning without training wheels, not even riding with because she managed to fall over a few times even with training wheels. Tried to explain to her that if she keeps doing stuff like that, she'll regret it. "Games I never played in but still wish that I had won". (She hasn't bitten yet though).
This one's not a "life lesson" but I often find myself explaining things so that my daughter can understand by using Great Big Sea as an example. My husband and I grew up speaking a lower class French (equivalent to an English Cockney, I guess). DIfferent pronunciation from regular Quebec dialect, VERY different from France. Over the years, I've bettered my pronunciation but there's still sometimes a difference between what I say and what she learns in school.
She and hubby were having arguement and called me in. How do you say Easter in French (Paques)? Kaesye said "Pack" (France), I said "Pawk" (regular QC), Hubby said "Powk" (Cockney). She. of course, claimed we were wrong. To my "how you speak depends on where you learned your French" She answered "We learn it from our Mommies". Tried to think of a character in a movie that speaks English with a British accent. Then I said "Have you even noticed that when Alan's talking up on stage, he says things differently?" "Yep" "That's because in Newfoundland, they have accents different from ours, they say things differently there. That doesn't mean it's wrong". Haven't heard any more corrections from her, though she does stare at me blankly sometimes and she tries to figure out what I just said.
