    Montreal- March 20/2009

Ok let me just say that although I’ve been lurking on the OKP forever, this is my first post. The show was so amazing last night that I just had to break out of lurkedom to write a review.

The Montreal show last night was fantastic! It was my third (My first being the Something Beautiful Tour and the second being the Hard and the Easy tour). This time I took my best friend, who happens to be a heavy metal, head- banging music type. I wasn’t sure that she would like it. Let’s just say that by the end of the night, she ended up having a great time, although a) I don’t think she’ll ever admit and b) with the exception of a few songs, I don’t think I’ve quite converted her. But she wasn’t bored, which was my main worry of the evening.

SotW was pretty great! I’ve previously heard a bunch of their songs, and liked them, but as with GBS, hearing them live is a completely different experience. I honestly thought that when they did Home for a Rest that the roof would cave in! There was so much stomping and clapping (My friend had this deer in the headlights look as in “what did I get myself into”) It was unreal!

Then the boys came out and it was all uphill from there. J

I don’t have a set list per se. My friend gave me a piece of paper and pen to write it all down but I just got so into the show that I didn’t end up writing anything. I came home and went through their entire discography though, so I’m pretty sure the following list is complete, although (except for the first two and last song) they are not in any particular order. There was only one encore, but I’m pretty sure that they did about 4-5 songs in that one encore. If someone has a more accurate set list, please feel free to correct me.

    Donkey Riding

    Captain Kidd

    Paddy Murphy

    Ferryland Sealer

    When I am King

    Helmethead

    Here and Now

    Danny Boy

    I fought the law/Summer of 69/ Jessi’s girl/ Bohemian Rhapsody medley

    Mari Mac

    Consequence Free

    When I’m up

    England

    General Taylor

    Love me tonight

    Run Runaway

    Gallow’s Pole

    Lukey

    Scolding Wife

    Charlie Horse

    Ordinary Day

    ENCORE:

Sea of No Cares (living room version)

    Straight to Hell

Old Black Rum/ Political (with SoTW)

I was a little disappointed that they didn’t do Excursion or Old Brown’s Daughter, but that was entirely forgivable since we did get Straight to Hell (my fav. Song from their new album)

There was very little banter, and whenever there was, I ended up not hearing anything, because we had a group of girls from out of town standing next to us and they did nothing but talk (loudly) and drink (excessively) with their boyfriends/ husbands throughout the whole show. But they were nice enough people, and whenever I wanted to take a picture/video, they were very good about giving me some space, so it really wasn’t annoyed too much.

When they did their little sing-along medley, I’ve got to say that even I was shocked at how good us Montrealers were! Alan commented that we were the best he’s seen on the tour so far (I’m sure he says that everywhere, or at least almost everywhere, but it was still nice to hear). The crowd was really into it, there was singing/dancing/ clapping in every corner! And the boys once again sold out the venue, so good for them! Considering it’s going to be awhile before we see them next, they really went out with a bang!

I’m sure I’ll think up some more as the evening begins to sink in some more, but it was definitely the best show I’ve seen them do and I wish I could rewind and re-experience the evening all over again…

    Re: Montreal- March 20/2009

Could've done without the girl who shoved her way to the front and couldn't understand why people were upset. Then tried to convince the security guard that people were being mean to her.

I never really listened to SOTW before and I really enjoyed them (so did my 6 year old who ONLY listens to GBS and asked us to buy her their CD).

The show was great as always but the banter was missing for some reason. Loved the Political/Old Black Rum encore. Got the whole thing on video, as hard as it was was all kinds of stuff going on stage, everywhere. SOTW stage antics could make GBS's look tame :) Would love to be the girl whose camera Vince got and took photos of the encore on stage with (and wondering if he really snapped photos down their pants with someone's cell photo during SOTW set).

Now if only GBS would come more than once every 3 years.

Wow, a great show! So great to have the guys back after 3 years. Crowd was loud and enjoying every minute of this fabulous moment. Thanks B'ys for this unforgettable evening. (And thanks Lynne, you're my best concert buddie ever!!)

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

I'm not sure if it was that they were playing in their home country, that they were playing with long time friends SOTW, or if they were on some level aware that they were one step away from a hiatus, but the boys were on fire last night.  I have never heard them perform with such passion and skill without let up from start to finish.  Murray was animated, Alan was beaming through his beard, Sean was just superhuman, Bob was smiling, and Kris as always, stalwart and true behind it all (joking it up when he "rang" the helmethead "bell" in the wrong song).

And for me, well worth the 3 1/2 hour wait in line outside in the cold and another 1 1/2 inside; my friend and I met some wonderful Montrealers in line who shared the rail with us and danced and sang the night away, helping create a "perfect" night for everybody.  My smiling muscles are sore, thanks to Murray who laughed more than I've seen before.  Today, my voice just doesn't work, much to my kids' delight, but makes reentry more challenging.

SOTW was wonderful as well; very entertaining, especially Mitch the drummer who did things with a tamborine (and a cell phone) that I am not at liberty to discuss here.    Their enjoyment and talent is just infectious;  I will strive to capture that joy in my regular job, but can't imagine that I'll achieve it.

Snagged a set list, a veritable parade of hits:

    Donkey Riding

    Captain Kidd

    Love Me Tonight

    Paddy Murphy

    When I'm Up

    Lukey

    England

    Charley the Horse

    Ferryland

    When I Am King

    Here & Now

    General Taylor

    Scolding Wife

    Run, Runaway

    Helmet Head

John Barbour (they skipped this one, and substituted a multitude of covers:  one by April Wine, "I fought the Law", Jesse's Girl, Bohemian Rhapsody, and more, complete with Alan conducting responses from different sides of the room.  Not sure if this slot is where they did the covers though, wasn't paying enough attention.  Sean also performed an intimate and moving "Danny Boy", sitting right up front on the edge of the stage.  Again, can't remember exactly where this happened.)

    Consequence Free

    Mari Mac

    Ordinary Day

Encores:  Sea of No Cares, Straight to Hell (Yay, finally!), then Polical and Black Rum together with SOTW.

Thanks to you all and enjoy the last few shows before the break.  And thanks particularly to Glenn, who always runs things smoothly, and makes time to say hello and give me a signature.  We'll be ready when you come within striking distance again.

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

I believe Sean threw Danny Boy in before Here & Now. He commented right before General Taylor that Alan said he had screwed the set list up (I'm guessing because it meant 2 nearly back to back tough vocal pieces for Sean).

Were you one of the women I met outside? I was the one in front with the baby.

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

You betcha.  We saw you and your daughter further down along the rail, but didn't get a chance to see you after the concert to chat.  Hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.  And hope your husband (and wee one) enjoyed the view from up in the balcony.

It did indeed seem like a vocally challenging night for Sean, particularly given that he was fighting back the flu.  He really put everything into it; I was wondering if he would have anything left for the next night's concert.

We'll see you again I'm sure.  Let me know if you venture south to concerts in our area.  I've got a couple of tremendous built in babysitters in my house!  But they are GBS fans as well, so might not appreciate sitting out a nearby concert.

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

They were fine up in the balcony. He slept through most of the show and I think my husband enjoyed the time with him.

The last few summers we've spent our summer vacation going to a few shows in the northern US but I guess that won't happen this year  since their next show probably won't be until Wolftrap towards the end of August. But if there's a few week-end ones within a few hour's drive in the fall we may try.

The babysitter might work for the baby but my daughter would not stand for it. She still hasn't forgiven us for leaving her behind last July to go see them in Ottawa & Toronto :(

Excellent review, Claudia and I could not agree more.  I have seen my fair share of GBS show (ok, perhaps a little more than my fair share) and I have to say that this show in Montreal was perhaps the best show that I have ever seen them do!  The band was on fire, the crowd was electric (could have done without the crowd surfing, though) and it was as close to a perfect evening as I have ever had.

    Well done, guys!  Thanks!

Hey Fran, I think you were at my left! If so, you also ended up with that blond girl trying to get in first row between you and I !! P.S. I'm still sad they didn't sing Company Of Fools :(

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

Yep. Still wondering if the security guard would have decided to make the whole ordeal his business if I had thrown her to the floor. I just felt bad because it upset my daughter and Bob looked like he was noticing the tussle which made me rather embarrassed.

At least we got Ferryland Sealer and an unscheduled Danny Boy.

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

Oh you know Fran, that security guard was a f**ktwit ! He probably didn't want to do anything because she was a cute little blond girl. Did you know she told him she moved closer to the stage because someone was pulling her hair? How desperate can you be to say such rubbish just to get front row. I dunno the name of the person who came to talk to the security guard while I told him he should do his job. If that person reads the board and recognize herself, I just want to tell her I agreed 100% when she said we waited for hours outside and that this girl was rude and should go back where she belonged. I think you are right Fran, Bob seemed to have noticed. Thanks for helping me get rid of that girl. Never thought my hips would someday help me get rid of an annoying person LOL !

    Re: Montreal March 20th 2009

I would've squeezed harder but I wasn't sure you were doing the same and I didn't want to be pushing you off in the process.

Yeah, she said a guy who was trying to keep her from shoving my daughter aside pulled her hair. I know there was also a woman behind me who wrestled with her for a bit before she managed to get by her. Incidents like that tend to spoil a show.

I agree with you, it does spoil a show. I seriously don't remember which songs were sung while she was there. I also showed her my arm because I am injured and told her she was hurting me but she did not care. I think I would have lost it if she had hurt your daughter. No one touches a child when I'm around ;) Hope to see you again, you were a very nice and pleasant front row neighbor. :)
