Hi there!
Finally gave in and registered... I discovered GBS this summer while on vacation in Nfld. And a marvellous week it was too in St Johns! I wanna emigrate!! :)
I spent an instructive couple of hours in Fred's one morning and bought loads of CDs, two of which were GBS (Up and Fortune's Favour), and they're probably my absolute favourites of the lot. Although The Navigators are pretty good too, I wish I'd done the CD buying at the beginning of the week instead of the end, I'm sure they were playing George Street a lot while I was there but I was none the wiser. You live and learn!
I live in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and was intrigued to see you have a town called St Albans too. We didn't manage to visit though. We decided to see how far along Highway 1 we could get (and get back to St Johns) in a day, managed to visit Trinity, a mere fingernail's width across the map! I was absolutely ASTOUNDED by the sheer scale of the island. Suddenly GB is a tiny, tiny place... So a road trip to St Albans was abandoned, when we come back we'll organise a night's accommodation there, that's the only way to do it I think, if we want to be based in St Johns again.
Looking around the site I saw the link to Radio Newfoundland - thanks to whoever posted that. Takes me right back. Why does somewhere half way around the world feel like home? It makes me sad that here in the UK we stuggle so much with appreciating and supporting our traditional music. It's just not "cool" here.
So, when are GBS hitting this side of the pond again? I'll travel, ooh, at least 30 miles... Nah, I'd travel to the most northerly of the Scottish Islands if there was only one gig...
Catch you later!
A hug is the perfect gift - one size fits all and nobody minds if you give it back.
