    Boston 10/24 Orpheum Theater

    Cheers Boys!!!

What an excellent show!  I thought that Melody Tent last year was great, then the L.L. Bean show in Freeport was outstanding - but tonight, you outdid yourselves!  I was thrilled to be there and couldn't have asked for better.  Right from the start, you brought the house to its feet and we stayed there until the lights came up.

So for once, I actually got a seat that wasn't a nose bleeder... matter of fact, front row center - it was an absolute thrill.  Singing and dancing in the aisle (as much as Orpheum Staff would allow) wearing my favorite tee ("What if the Hokey-Pokey is what it's all about?") was excellent - and I was happy to step aside and see three young boys getting some stage time and attention (nice touch with the picks, the boys seemed happy to get them).

A great set - with a perfect closing.  The a cappella version of Old Brown's Daughter - I got a chance to give a 5th part harmony a whirl that I have only tried in the car and shower.  With the boys right there in front of me, I got to hear what it would sound like.  Loved it!  Thanks again for a wonderful evening in Boston.  Come back soon!!!

    Re: Boston 10/24 Orpheum Theater

After dinner at the Mexican place, we walked down through the Downtown Crossing and my wife got a maple mocha at Borders, so we paused at the street corner outside the Orpheum while she finished it.  About 7:30 I’m just watching people and 4 guys come around the corner, walking fast.  I recognized Alan and said “Hey Alan!” He looks over at me and says “How ya doing?” as he keeps on walking and I realize it was Sean beside him, Bob behind them, and it must have been a Murray a few paces in front!  My wife almost choked on her coffee and said “that was Alan – Alan talked to us!!”  Following them were a mother, father and two small girls who told us they had seen them get off the bus.  My wife wanted to follow them – they must have headed up the street to a nearby pub for a pre-show beer.  The family went another 50 feet up and watched them, then came back, coming to the same conclusion as us – leave them alone for a ‘band moment’.

They came on stage to the taped sound of Rocks of Merasheen, here’s the set list:

    Tonight

    Process Man

    Pat Murphy

    When I’m Up

    Jack Hinks

    England

    Charley Horse

    Hard Case

    River Driver

    Here and Now

Alan solo – “Sent to Charlestown” (Born and Bred in Boston?)

    Company of Fools

    I Fought the Law/500 Miles/Bohemian Rhapsody

    Run Runaway

    Kitchen party (song?)

    Captain Kidd

    When I Am King

    Boston and St Johns

    Scolding Wife

    I’m A Rover

    Helmet Head

    Dream to Live

    Consequence Free

    Mari Mac

    Ordinary Day

    Walk On the Moon

    Encores

    “In Boston” – ad lib

    Old Black Rum

    Gallows Pole

    Straight To Hell

    Old Brown’s Daughter

Our seats were well back, a couple of rows behind the soundboard – hats off to the guy at the digital recorder!  When he noticed that his tall stool would be blocking the view of those of us directly behind him, he had a regular chair brought to him so we had full view.

It was a rowdy crowd – could/would not keep quiet during River Driver, and even OBD had people clapping and shouting.

The “aisle ***” were in great force – I watched one woman who would chase people away were trying to dance in the aisles – even right to the end of the show!

Lots of singing along, of course, although it seemed a lot of people do not know the new tunes from Fortune’s Favour too well (or don’t like them as much as the old stuff).

The band was tight as always, although I could tell the night-after-night shows have led Alan and Sean to conserve their voices as much as they can.

The second set started with Alan on bouzouki and Bob on button accordion, sitting on the drum platform playing, then Sean joining in on bodhran, then Murray and Chris both on acoustic guitars – some people knew the song as they joined in the one sing-instead-of play chorus.

The first encore was Alan starting out a 50s-style C-A-minor-F-G chord pattern, making up a few words about Boston, then the rest of the guys joined in and Sean made up a verse, etc.

I’ve got blisters on my fingers today from clapping so much and I’m a little hoarse from singing along.  Next weekend it’s Portland!

Absolutely insane concert!!  I've been a huge fan since Up first came out, and have had the terrible misfortune to have had tickets to GBS concerts 4 times, and each time something has come up last minute that I couldn't go...  so needless to say, finally getting to see them in concert was incredible!!!!

But if that wasn't enough, we actually bumped into them after the show at a local pub and in what was easily the most amazing and most embaressing moment ever - I was talking to the bartender and turned around to see Alan standing three feet infront of me...  normally this is where one would speak...  maybe say hello or something sane like that - but I literally just stood there, jaw agape, for a good 30 seconds before I could say anything!

The guys were amazing...  after driving around like crazy on a busy tour schedule and just singing and playing a two set concert they still took the time to hang out with some fans - there's no other band around that would do that!!!  Absolutely amazing...   Thank you so much guys!!!

A bit of The Rock in every note (Boston, Orpheum Theatre)

AWESOME show again!  As always the boys played from their hearts, brought us all to our feet and shared a bit of Newfoundland with us through their songs.  This year's Boston show was stronger and more exciting than the last three, and although I love traditional Newfoundland music, I also love the blend of the music on Fortunes Favour.  As for the concert, I love hearing Gallows Pole (Robert Plant would be proud) and I've gotta admit, the acapella finish of Old Brown's Daughter fills my heart with beauty and joy.

I may be Boston born and bred but there's a bit more of a Newf in me each time I listen to GBS.  Yes, b'y!

Anita (an honorary Newf, Screeched In in Stephenville in 2003 who visits family on The Rock each summer)

I think we were cross aisle seatmates!  Wow,  loved, loved, loved the show!  It was rockin' from the front to the back of the balcony and they sounded wonderful! So glad I made the trip

    Re: Boston 10/24 Orpheum Theater

I don't have much to add to what everyone else wrote, except that something very cool happened. I was seated in the last row of the orchestra section on the aisle and came to the show alone. No biggie. The usher who was working near me was very strict with everyone, which is fine--that was her job. Well, near the end of the show, she came up to me and said, "Come with me." I thought I was in big trouble for some reason (for what, I don't know), but instead she took me down to the third row, where there were some empty seats. She said, I thought you would have more fun dancing around down here. Wow!  And if that wasn't enough, Alan smiled directly at me for several seconds after that! Didn't just make my day--made my year, I think. I waited around afterwards hoping to meet the band, but I had to catch the last train back to Providence. Oh well, next time. Thank you, boys, and thank you usher!

Did anyone take any photos at this show?  It sure was plain obvious what people had said last year about the show at the Orpheum- the b'ys were in the dark when they came to the front of the stage.

I didn't take pix this time but I took some video clips from the 11th row. Came out pretty decent for a little digital camera. Now I get to watch my own private concert whenever I want! The lighting was awful last time at the Orpheum - I was only 3-4 rows from the stage but felt like I didn't really see the show because the lighting was so poor. It was a lot better this time - not perfect, but better. I'd love to see pix if anyone took some...

The Boston show was awesome. Very high energy night! The band was terrific. Great atmosphere and the crowd was really into it. Everyone did a nice job in singing along with the group.

Just got back from the Portland show. Again a great show! The boys were great. The facility and atmosphere was a little change from the Orpheum though. But it definitley picked up as the show went on.
