    dark side of the sea

    hey all

had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine that ended with an agreement to disagree... maybe you kind souls would be so generous as to voice an opinion and help us shed some light...on the dark side so to speak.

When in a rotten mood, i usually put on something by the b'ys and sing away the blues.  my friend was arguing that that is all they sing though....happy tunes.  i disagreed, yet when pouring through my often muddled mind, i could only think of a few songs by GBS that may be considered 'darker'.  Would anyone like to share some thoughts on this?

the songs that came to my mind were 'bad as i am', 'something to it' and 'buying time' as sort of brooding, jaded songs (maybe not 'dark per se...)  i also suggested 'something i should know'

     suggestions please!

sorry, just as an aside, i have no problem with dark and brooding sometimes and would be interested in hearing what GBS makes of it

Re: dark side of the sea

I would difinitely mention "Process Man" and "River Driver" (first that came to my mind).  Let's see... "How Did We Get From Saying 'I Love You'..." is not happy in any way, nor are "Someday Soon" or "Fisherman's Lament" (throw that one at your friend - it's probably the ultimate in sad GBS songe).  "French Shore", "Dream to Live", "England", and "Nothing Out of Nothing" are a few of the several that are melancholy but not quite downright sad.

    Hi danarion

It's a matter how of how you define dark I guess. For me, on FF, I find the story and feel of Banks of Newfoundland heavy, dark and cold; Hard Case is troubled and complicated (vs. happy); Rocks of Merasheen is forlorn in message and feel; Dream to Live is exquisitely beautiful but full of yearning and mournful; Heart of Stone is regretful, questioning, yearning.

The Doyle fronted songs are 'happy' if you want to give them a five letter house to live in, but they are much more than that as well.

I guess I don't like to define and limit songs by one word categories--i.e. happy vs. dark. I find most songs and experiences more interesting and complex, so that's my best crack at it.

Some songs that I can think of that are more of a dark side of Great Big Sea which have not been stated would be; "My Apology" from the Play album. And the one that I first thought of was "Widow in the Window" from the Sea of No Cares record. Both are, ironically, sung by Sean

OMB "Widow in the Window" and "My Apology"!  I knew my brain fart was blocking a few obvious ones!  "Clearest Indication" and "Boston & St. John's" are rather forlorn love songs as well.

"Summer" is a gorgeous song of hope and vitality, but is sung with a sort of yearning that can make you feel happy or blue, depending on the mood you're in when you listen to it and how you interpret the song.

Another that came to mind is Cod Liver Oil. I think we've come up with enough proof that GBS isn't always happy go lucky...they just make us feel that way! Smile

In Akron, Sean announced Gallows Pole as the most evil song he knows.

Technically, that's a cheat, Greg.  Gallows Pole isn't a Great Big Sea song!Stick out tongue

Cod Liver Oil is a fairly dark song, but personally I like to put that in a category with Scolding Wife. It has sort of a dank feel to it but it is for comical purposes. Just my opinion.

Well if youre going by titles only I have always consider "the jolly butcher" to be oddly disturbing Angel I think of Friday the 13th movies whenever I read that name. I love the song though LOL

Barque in the habour is pretty sad

    Demasduit is dark IMHO

Ferryland Sealer is pretty gross as well

Some were killing some were scalping, some were hauling on board,
Some more they were firing and a-missing of their loads.
In the dusk of the evening all hands in from the cold,
And we counted nine hundred fine scalps in the hold.

    Recruiting Seargant is pretty dark

    Nothing out of Nothing

THose are a few I can think of and now I am depressed thanks a alot!

    JK ;)

Re: dark side of the sea

Now while some of these song were not written by GBS they are in my mind GBS songs, so just roll with it.

French Perfume works as dark for me! Ghosts, criminals and suicide are just kinda downbeat subjects I think.

Many GBS tunes sound upbeat but have darker underpinnings.

Lukey's Boat is so tongue in cheek and has such an upbeat sounding tune it is hard to remember it's very much about about some poor man's piece of s*&t boat, his inability to feed himself and his indifference to the death of his wife.

Unrequited Musician's lust is the core of Margarita.

From Haven't Seen you in a Long time comes for me the creepiest line in any song they do... Can you feel me, when he's making love to you?
It smacks of envy, obsession and a stalking mentality that sets me on edge.

Recruiting Sargent about the death of 500 Newfoundland lads in one of the more ill fated military campaigns you can think of.

Widow in the Widow again is very much about obsession , firstly of the widow who can't let go, but also of the protagonist, who wishes to change the widows outlook but does not accept that that it is not within his power, and darkest of all... when the background singers go

    FLOwowowowoERS, FLOWOWOWOWERS FLOWOWOWOWOWOheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeERS!
Creeps me right the f*&k out! I am ready to shoot myself every time I hear it!

Some people see a dark side when they learn Ferryland Sealer is about, well, not surprisingly, Sealing, "with our bats in our hands, it was early for to go!"

and as mentioned above, Fisherman's lament, Process Man and Nothing out of Nothing paint a bleak picture.

What keeps the darkness from overwhelming even these dark tune is the positive energy, and underlying positive attitude the band brings to the music. It often obscures the depth of the negative content. Now if you want negative energy from your Celtic influenced POP music, get a couple of Pouges albums!

Re: dark side of the sea

This is a funny topic for me to stumble upon. I recently converted my DH to the "dark side" as he thought all GBS songs were depressing but he likes the music now. I guess it's in the interpretation.
Sing an unwritten song or repent for the deeds you left undone.
