Grey Cup show, not your typical review

So apparently Great Big Sea came and played at the MTCC on Saturday night.

I bought tickets for said event way back in June of this past year and said that I was NOT going to stand in line, nor stand near the front of the venue for the concert.  Well, guess what?  I stood in line... briefly, until I realized that the two extra tickets I had for the show had yet to be claimed.  So I rushed back to find two of the nicest Canadian Armed Forces personnel that one will ever meet and offered up the pair of tickets to them.

It was a great night, but for me it was seeing the joy on someone's face after handing off tickets, and then watching them enjoy the show.  Also reuniting with a friend who has been out of the country for three years and getting to see her favourite band again.

I've seen Great Big Sea many times before and will see them again in the future, I'm sure.  For me, tonight was all about hanging out with friends and having fun.  I can definitely say that my mission was accomplished!  Cheers to Dee, Kim, Sheila, Randy, Wes, Brenda, Rob, Marn, Doug & Kev for a great night!

The band played great songs, Alan has some serious cool facial scruff going on, but I'll leave a concert review to someone that stayed up near the stage for the entire show.

Oh Cathie, it wasn't the least bit scruffy! It was neatly trimmed.

Kudos to the organizers that pulled off these amazing concert events all weekend in an incredible place for a concert. I have been to a lot of events at the Convention Centre but I have never seen it so packed. I can't say much for the sound at our vantage point. Even the sound from the singers all around us bad.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to hook up with other OKP'ers beforehand but the line to get in the CN tower was not planned for!  I thought the show was OK but not one of my favorites.  They did all their hits and party songs, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. (sorry no play list here) they played, maybe 1 hr. 15min and they were third in the lineup which was great so still time to do other stuff in the evening. Spirit of the West started out and I really thought they were great, then Lowest of the Low who were alot more rock than I expected. I didn't get into the whole football scene and was a bit put off by the beauty contest for a men's magazine which was inserted before GBS came on with the "winner" selected after they were done. Poor taste all around. Also had this cankpot next to me who kept telling me to be quiet and not rant and roar-she clearly was not a fan .  I was grateful when the band encouraged making some noise, dancing and getting the party started!! I just got louder each time! She finally moved.

As it was my first visit to Toronto I had a blast in the city and will definely go back-what a great time. Just wont see GBS in big arenas if I have the choice.

I was up at the gate on Bob's side the for all the shows except Emerson Drive.  I agree that Spirit of the West was great and got the crowd started.  Too bad there was so much time between the bands.  Lowest of the Low was OK, but I was waiting for GBS!  I have been to four shows and never this close.  It was great too be able to see everything.  I got some great shots and will be posting them shortly.  It was the first time for hearing Walk on the Moon and I really liked it.  I can't wait for the new album.  I enjoyed hearing all the hits and it was the first time I had heard Penalope in concert.  I am not a big fan of that song but it was neat with the live trumpet.

As usual, the boys seemed to be having a great time, especially Sean and Alan.  Alan did a great little set with the crowd of "Guess the tune" and it was very well received.  The crowd was very into the music and Alan seemed a little taken back at how well we responded "Fair Thee Well" for Helmet head!

It was a great concert and well worth standing for 6 hours straight for!

Ohhh Sharn. I blew Alan kisses for you. I have never been so close. I was right in front of his mic stand right behind the people leaning on the fence (any OKPers stand near me? I was the one of the ones having issues with the 6'7" goon who tried to push in front of 5'2" me...). Wow, oh wow. It's a wholllleeee 'nother concert when you're up there, isn't it? I did have a little heart palpitation when I saw them coming out in the dark...saw the swing of Alan's hair and saw the light shining through his beard! No, I have no pix, but the people all around me were taking copious quantities, so I hope someone will post them.

The venue was AWFUL in terms of their organization...

ANNE, if you're reading this...I wished you were there. I have never seen BOB so smiley or dancy in my life! It was amazing!

    Sighhhhhhhhhhh

Thanks for the wish, Kristina. I wish I had been there too. Does Bob also have the facial hair back? It looked like it from a couple photos I saw from the last show.

Re: Grey Cup show, not your typical review

Here is another pic of the entire band, no Bob does not have any facial hair, only Alan.

I should have another photo soon but sadly not one of when he winked at me!! I was at the end by Bob in the black tank top if any OKPers were by me.  I was the one getting pushed by the security guards and police in between the shows when the fights broke out.  Someone posted about the venue and I agree, it was a great GBS show but I was not impressed y the venue or the drunk non GBS fans!

Anne, No, not that I saw. He and Sean were "clean-cut" and Alan was more "mountain-man". Mmmmmm.

Re: Grey Cup show, not your typical review

The band was great , but I have never met so many rude people at a GBS show, the venue was awful and when my friend got molested and some security gave her attitude, thats when I decided it was a bust. Its too bad because all other Grey Cup stuff was great, maybe Im getting too old for shows like these. I kind of wish I had stayed back and watched from a distance. My husband watched the whole show from the beer tickets and beer line. They knew there would be close to 10 thousand there, so why only 2 beer ticket booths. Why Why Why????

But I like the mountain man look. Yummy.

Hmmm...I am sorry you and your friend had a rough time! We actually thought that the group was fairly mannerly for the amount of people and alcohol being served. (except for the guys that shoved ahead of me, but we took care of them.)

I agree. Not enough refreshment stands/ticket stands for the amount of people. Glenn actually gave up on trying to get something to drink--very unlike Glenn! LOL. The organization at the venue was TERRIBLE.

Re: Grey Cup show, not your typical review

I agree that the venue was terrible.  The security guard wouldn't go to help that poor girl because he said someone in the crowd called him an idiot, I thought he was an idiot for not helping, but at least he was moved after that incident.   But no matter how bad the venue and organization the boys were amazing.  I just felt bad for Emerson Drive after over half the crowd left after GBS.

I really hope Alan posts a FTR about the events, I would love to hear what he thought abot the whole thing

Hey. Can someone list for me the songs that were in the sing-along?

    Here's the ones I remember:

    (not in any order)

    500 miles

    Bohemian Rhapsody

    Video Killed the Radio Star

I am amazed at how much I don't remember, LOL.
