I'm at my parent's house for Thanksgiving, and found an old concertina in the closet. it's still in good shape and I want to learn to play it. Any suggestions?

Hey I'm new to the great big sea forum, though I've been a fan my whole life. I've been listening to some other celtic bands in the maritimes and I've been finding members of great big sea playing with other bands. The Irish Descendants had them in "Downtown Girl" and The Barra MacNeils had Doyle sing in "Misty Moisty Morning." Does anyone know of any other bands that have used a member of great big sea?

I know there's at least one other Todd fan here. Todd is doing an unprecedented thing (for him) - performing his A Wizard A True Star album in its entirety at a limited number of special shows.

So far there are 2 shows scheduled in Akron (first one is almost sold out), one in Stamford - all of these in early September. Then a show in London and one in Amsterdam next year.

Howdy! I am looking to buy a fairly inexpensive D whistle. Any suggestions? I think I have taken my $10 whistles as far as they can go. Any one have a recommendation for one in the $30 - 50 range? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

A Canadian musician who tried to get United to compensate him for a guitar that was tossed and damaged by a United worker retaliated with a YouTube video. [Tip to Chicago Tribune]

It all started on March 31, 2008. Dave Carroll and his Sons of Maxwell bandmates were sitting in a plane at O'Hare, waiting to disembark when a fellow passenger cried out:

"My God, they're throwing guitars out there."

They looked out the window. They saw a United worker tossing one of their guitars. Carroll discovered later that among those flying instruments was his $3,500 Taylor, which ended up smashed. And so began a nine month saga of trying to get United to pay for the damage. When the airline wouldn't, Carroll made a decision. He said on his site:

"I promised the last person to finally say 'no' to compensation ... that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world."

He followed through with his threat. He posted his country ode, "United Breaks Guitars," on YouTube Monday. Since then, the video has been viewed more than half a million times and is a hit with the media.

United apologized, plans to use the video internally to help "change its culture," and, according to a spokeswoman for the carrier:

"We are in conversation with one another to make what happened right."

The lesson here? Don't piss off a musician.

i'm sure this question has come up at least once, but I just got hooked on Great Big Sea and would like to learn some of the fiddle parts (the tune to donkey riding and mari mac off the top of my head) and was wondering if there was a good place to find the sheet music or tabs. can anyone help me out?

What age is appropriate to put children into music lessons?

Since there are people on here with a musical background, I thought it might be an appropriate place to ask this question.

At what age should you start children in music classes?

My 3 year old daughter shows great interest in the guitar (believe it or not, from watching the boys on DVD, lol) We did buy her a child size guitar (a real one), to try to encourage her. But I was wondering when I should take it further?

I am not sure if she quite has the attention span yet to sit through lessons, so I do not think that she is ready yet. Or would she be ready? I don’t know.

And is it better to start with the guitar or piano, which she also likes. We did buy her a keyboard, which she likes playing (but with no rhythm as of yet).

I just want to make sure that I encourage her, but do not want to push her. Does that make sense?

Help with Micing a Bodhran!!!!!

Hi everyone. I've been playing bodhran for a few years now and have recently joined a new band. Up to now I've simply been leaning the drum into my vocal mic as I play and sing, and that's worked ok for small venues. The band I'm playing with now, however, has 5 members and we're expecting to play larger venues, which means ideally micing the drum on its own.

I'll be standing while playing, and possibly moving around a bit as frontman/lead vocals, so I've been thinking about a wireless mic setup. Can anyone weigh in with their experience on this? Makes/models of mics would be great too so I can track the right gear down locally. Any suggestions for compressor/effects settings for live performance would be great as well as I'm more or less starting from scratch with this band.

There's a film based around Morris dancing and of course the great music that goes with it, just starting the rounds here in the UK. I don't know if it will ever be available on DVD but unless there's enough interest it may never happen. What a waste! I personally think Morris dancing should open the Olympics. There's a chance to vote on the film's circulation if you should so choose.

Can you take the "love" out of a love song?

I thought id see what some on here had to say on a topic that my fiancee and i had a bit of a friendly argument about. I said that to me some of the best love songs and the most meaningful ones are the ones that are not as flowery and obvious about the topic. To go further i think that one of the most meaningful topics on love is the fear of being in love and recognizing that you were scared to be that vulnerable to someone. For that reason a song like sea of no cares is my idea of the ideal love song. So i guess what im getting at is do you think that to be a good love song the song has to be about love as a perfect state or even about love at all?

I just wanted to ask for a little advice. I'm auditioning for this fun Murder Mystery show with the WhoDunnt Murder Mystery Theater here in louisville called "Murder by the Sea: The Dark Veil Mystery and there is a part in the audition where you get to sing. They're asking for everyone to be prepared to sing "Greensleeves" or a song along the lines of a folk-ballad mode. Now don't get me wrong, i shall bow my head to the classic but i just don't like singing Greensleeves, haha. SO!!

Whats another great Folkie song that would be appropriate?

Fun show at Tupelo Hall on Thursday night. Carbon Leaf have quite a cult following. Their sound is defined by lead singer Barry Privett's deep sound with the harmonies of rhythm guitarist terry Clark and the ever-present lead guitar of Carter Gravatt.
During the show Privett told the audience to burn copies of their new CD, Nothing Rhymes With Woman, and give them to friends to get more people at their shows - first time I can remember a band coming out and saying this well known fact - bands make more money playing concerts (even at small venues) then selling CDs.

I have recently discovered a great band from Toronto called Enter the Haggis. Saw them last night in Chicago. Met some other Great Big Sea fans there and enjoyed a night of great music!

They are such a talented group of guys, and the music is wonderful.
