"England" and the first Thanksgivng

For the month of November I have been teaching my Kindergarteners about the settlement of North AMerica, from the Asians who wandered here following the herds, to Native Americans, to the vikings, to the European explores and settlers.

The loved the Indian flute and drum music and dances.

But later in the unit, when I introduced the Pilgrims I played 'England" for them. They have developed this sort of reverence for the song! They sing it allt he time, and ask me to play it for them.

On Friday, they were making construction paper Mayflowers (turned Pirate ships) and they burst into choruses of "far from the shores of England" and i managed to catch them on video!

Since I finally figured out how to start a new thread (im not slow....really) I thought this might be fun. Here's a chance for everyone to post the things that makes us GBS fans....unique. The things that make our non-gbs-loving friends look at us and say " Are you crazy??"

For Example :

You know your a GBS Fan WHEN..

- You drive down the road listening to STH at full volume, and all the older neighbours who happen to be out moving their lawn, stop and stare. Then when you wave, they pretend they dont know you.

- You sing 'Feel it Turn' in the shower on a regular basis...

Now its your turn!!! and im sure you'll come up with something better than I did.

A crazy topic-starter for all those "What would you do if...." "If you could have...." "Who would you want...." polls. Just for purely amusing fun of course.

First question: If you were in a car and one of the b'ys was driving, which one would you want behind the wheel?

I'd pick Bob. He seems safest, but then again, you never know. People say its the quiet ones you have to look out for and if that's true, then I'd definitely go with Alan...I'm really just interested in staying alive...

And I think I'm going to submit a new question every weekish, depending on when inspiration hits me.

Other than those naughty ones you ladies might have of Sean .... ANyone else ever dream of Great Big Sea?

I had two this week. Don't remember the first one, but the last one I was in a big kitchen (a party!) and making sandwiches for people - roast beef, ham and pastrami, 3 kinds of cheese, but I couldn't remember who wanted what! Someone started singing End of the World, but either couldn't sing it fast enough or couldn't remember all the words so we started singing Ordinary Day. Alan was standing to one side smiling, eating a sandwich!

So I decided to start this thread because there's been much posted about Sean and Alan recently, alot by me cause well, it's Sean and Alan, and tho I love ALL the b'ys and cannot pick just one to adore, I thought that maybe there should be some recent mention of our favorite multi-talented and multi-instramenalist Bob.

I'll just start by saying that I love his smile (when I get to actually see it) and I greatly admire the talent that he brings to GBS. What does the rest of the OKP have to say about our Bob?

But I wasn't clear what the rules are, regarding putting up a link to a video clip or two from one of their live shows... I got some pretty nice vid shots of their Saturday night show in Petaluma, and have not as of yet heard back from the moderator regarding this... also couldn't locate the TOS to clarify. I know there's a folder for still pics, but video might be a different story.

Anyone..? And don't just say "post 'em..!!" if it's gonna get me in trouble... LOL

"As both a fan and an industry professional who has been working with GBS, I thought it might interest you and others to know that the "completely arbitrary" no-camera rules and no-photo/video/audio recording rules are not because the local house enjoys being camera ***. In fact, they're not arbitrary, but directly required by GBS or its agent.

GBS, like many music acts, have contracts that REQUIRE the local venue to prevent any recording or photography. In fact, I can quote directly from a GBS contract: "PURCHASER shall not itself nor shall it permit others to record, broadcast, televise, photograph, or otherwise reproduce the visual and/or audio performances hereunder, or any part thereof...."

Other parts of the contract ensure that should GBS decide that they were to sue a local venue for failure to fulfil that requirement of the contract, that the local venue would pay for all legal costs for GBS to sue them, regardless of the results of any awards.

So the people being camera *** are really just trying to protect their own backsides. You might cut them a little more slack. I'm not saying it's a fair or reasonable rule - just that it's GBS trying to enforce it, and some poor security guard is just trying to do their job so the venue doesn't get in trouble. Not because they're just trying to throw their weight around.":

So what's the real story here? I always see (and enjoy) show pics and planned to bring my camera to get some of my own finally. But if GBS puts this camera stuff in their contract does that mean they don't want any cameras there? If they don't why not they just say so and be done with it? Every GBS fan I ever talked to swears the boys love to pose for photos during the show but how do you explain what Blackfear said about their contracts?

I don't wanna do the wrong thing. I don't care if I "get away" with it. I don't want to be an a**hole at my show and I don't want to piss off the boys.

I must be honest, I did not hear of Great Big Sea till I saw state of play and thought "wtf was that?!?!" which I seriously never do while watching movies. Your sound is one of those odd but awesome mixes that just begs for more. You prolly don't like to be compared to other artists but I haven't been this suddenly engaged in such a similar genre since Dropkick Murphys. You guys rock

Amazing Show!

Just got back from the band's Toronto show with Spirit of the West. I've never heard the band live before and I have to say it was a great show! Very engaging and Spirit of the West was a great act to be incorporated into it!

For anyone who hasn't seen Great Big Sea live you MUST go! Just be prepared not to have a voice the next day, as I very much expect I wont!

Really, more than anything I'm surprised that this thread got such a response. It was intended to be a bit of harmless fun, snagged from an idea I got somewhere in the Bob thread. I understand that it ought to have been presented more tastefully but come on, lighten up, and take a step back.Nothing posted in this thread so far hasn't been posted by someone else on this forum before, and there was no jumping down anyone's throat then. In fact the pics seemed to have gotten a lot of admiration. (But what would I know I've only read all of the b'ys threads all the way through once.)

Anyhow I want to make a formal apology on my part, I really did not intend any disrespect,and I'm sorry if I offended anyone, and I hope we can all get along.

"The Shipping News"

I just searched for a thread about a movie I just watched, "The Shipping News," but there hasn't been much mention of it around here for years. It was released in 2001, but lately, it has been on Encore very frequently, so I thought I'd bring it up again. My Mom had watched and enjoyed it the other day, and she mentioned it to me because most of the movie is set in Newfoundland. I was stunned when I was watching it to find out that most of the soundtrack is Great Big Sea!

While it is not the greatest movie I have ever seen, it was definitely enjoyable, and the soundtrack can't be beat.

Next, I'm off to the library to get a copy of the book. If anyone has Encore, keep your eyes open for it. It's worth watching and absolutely worth listening to!

Old Brown's Daughter

I'm sitting at my desk in a windowless office as "Their is an ancient party at the other end of town . . ." plays over an over in my head. I am reliving the concert my family attended a few weeks ago; but I'm also remembering yesterday evening.

My six young ones and I sat at our kitchen table and sang along with Alan and the boys to Old Brown's Daughter. We pulled up YouTube on my laptop and watched the half dozen or so bootlegs from various shows while my 2 year old danced in circles behind my chair. My oldest two stood on either side and I could feel their breath on my cheeks as they sang. Maria and Ben (5 and 3 respectively) sat on either knee. Gus lightly "beat the drum" on the table keeping time with the music.

There's something about this music and this band that transcends all others. I looked up at my wife with tears in my eyes. This music makes our family whole in so many ways. I think we were meant for another time on a rocky shore much further north than where we live. Nonetheless, our kitchen and GBS keeps us warm on these cool fall evenings.

I hope you and your family can share the love that we have found for this music and for each other.

My husband and I (I'm a Dunville Girl) are providing the sound equipment and music for the annual "NEWFIE PARTY" in Virginia Beach, VA on March 13, 2010. There will be a Screech-In Ceremony, lots of dancing and drinking. A "Lovely Scuff" we're going to have! We were wondering if it would be possible for The Boys to write up a little message to all the displaced Newfies that could be read at the party? That would just be something extra for the guests.

If there are any transplanted Newfies out there who live anywhere close to Virginia Beach Va, the party will be held at the Fraternal Order Of Police Building on Birdneck Road in Va Beach with a start time of 6:00pm. I believe they're asking for a $10.00 donation at the door. You can bring your own booze and leave it with the bartender until you leave.

By the way, we really enjoyed the show at Wolftrap,Va! Thunder, lightening and torrential downpours can't drive a bunch of Newfies away!
