I'm trying to discover the name of a band that cited Great Big Sea as an influence. As far as I know they never got really big, but then I could be wrong 'cause I haven't listened to radio much in the last five years...

Long story short, I'm an ex-pat living in Canada. I heard this group on a local radio station (in Vermont) exactly once and then when I wanted to have a listen went to their website and obviously did a damn stupid thing by not buying their album... It was before I moved to Canada so it could've been as late as '06, but I'm thinking it may've been '04 or '05. I think they're from the Chesapeake Bay area, which delighted me at the time.

Pretty sure they shared a stage at least a couple of nights with Great Big Sea. Could've been at a festival, but I thought they toured together for at least part of one of GBS's Stateside endeavours.

Any help? Please? Pretty, pretty please?

Southern California GBS Shows!

Long time GBS fan here - - transplanted Canadian living in Southern California - - bringing my wife - -a cali native - - to her first GBS show this friday at the Galaxy in Santa Ana - - a small intimate little venue, and one of my favorites locally.

Any other die harders or OKP members headed that way?

I've noticed a big uptick in southern california appearances by GBS this past year or two, are they finally cracking the area a bit? Can't complain, it beats having to travel back home to get a show. Can't wait for friday!

Hello OKP. I am Dave and I have been away for a long while. I have introduced my girlfriend to GBS and she loves them. She saw them on the first stop on the recent tour, in Hyannis, MA. She immediately got me tickets to see them in Portsmouth, NH to see them again. I hardly had the heart to tell her I have seen them more times than I can count.

So I was meeting with a collegue from a company where I used to work. He tells me about this great band that he just went to see down in Bloomfield Iowa. They have a band member named Murray Foster. I say oh ya Moxy Früvous that's a Canadian band with a guy named Murray Foster and he says no Great Big Sea. So now the other Murray Foster plays for Great Big Sea. I'm the 3rd in my family line so I'm welcoming him into the family as Murray Foster IV. OBTW, love the music!

Hello to the Great Big Sea Family/Community!

This just a quick note to introduce myself - most pertinent information about me is in my online profile and in my earliest posts about the Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario concert on Friday, September 25, 2009.

It is almost a cliche for callers to talk radio to say "long time, first time caller." That is my experience with this community. I have been an avid and enthusiastic listener to the music of Great Big Sea for about eleven or twelve years, but I went to my first concert a week ago Friday, and just joined this online GBS family last Saturday. So, I am a long time listener, first time joiner.

I live - with my wife Sharon, who, of course, is also a GBS fan, and who also enjoyed her first Great Big Sea concert with me - in the northwesternmost reaches of the Lower Peninsula (a name not bandied about as much as Upper Peninsula) of Michigan. We live on 40 wooded acres three miles south of the small village of Cross Village - with our three dogs, twelve chickens, one rooster, one goat - and work in Petoskey.

The two dogs in my photo are MayDay and Bailey. Our third dog, Treebeard, would not consent to have his picture placed on the website. All three dogs also enjoy listening to Great Big Sea - or, at least, they do not voice/howl any disapproval. Even Treebeard, at eleven, has listened to the band his entire life. They also enjoy the Pogues, the Grateful Dead, the Ramones, The Dubliners, Bob Dylan, the Who, Tom Paxton, and most Klezmer music. Of these other bands, only the Grateful Dead had the dedicated fans, and the Family and Community that Great Big Sea enjoys. All of these artists were wonderful musicians, but Great Big Sea and the Grateful Dead have/has (used the past tense here since Jerry has died) a quality beyond mere musicianship and showmanship!

One interesting note: when we went to the concert a week ago, we drove to Brimley State Park about ten miles from Sault Sainte Marie (called the Soo by people who live there, or near there). We set up our camp and then went across the border to hear the band. When I was checking in with the park ranger, I noticed that the person just ahead of me was from Ontario. After checking in, I spoke to this gentleman to determine how long he thought it should take to Soo, Ontario. I mentioned that we were going to our first Great Big Sea concert. In addition to telling me how long to expect to get there - and giving me directions to the hockey arena - he told me that the band aways gives fantastic concerts. Then, and here is the interesting part, he said that if we loved Great Big Sea - and, I assured him that we did - we would also enjoy a band in which his brother-in-law is a member - Spirit of the West. After we got home, I checked out SOTW with Amazon. Being so far from a major city, we buy many of our books and music from them. I noticed that the SOTW albums (I still use the old terminology) that I checked out were purchased by people who also bought music by GBS. And, then, ealier this evening, I saw on one of the GBS concert reviews, that Spirit of the West had appeared in concert earlier on this tour with Great Big Sea.

I saw that SOTW had about thirteen albums available through Amazon. When I read the reviews, some thought their latest CD's were the best; while others wrote that their earlier, more Celtic, CD's were best, and their latest, more rock, music was less enjoyable. Obviously hoping to purchase their finest music, I would appreciate any suggestions from the GBS Community as to which SOTW albums should, in fact, serve as one's introduction to this band.

I just posted over in the thread about the Bloomington concert, but wanted to say hi here too. I've been a fan of GBS for about ten years but finally saw them in concert for the first time last night. We had SO much fun! (We being my mother and me--one of the things I love about Great Big Sea is that I can play them for almost anyone and make them into a fan!)

I've listened to Great Big Sea during a lot of tough times in my life, most recently during a tough break-up this summer, so it was really great to finally see them live (even if this also involved acknowledging Alan's startling resemblance to my ex-boyfriend...only my ex-boyfriend is a lot grumpier looking!). I was really pleased that they did "Something Beautiful", since that's one of the songs that's been played a lot on my MP3 player lately... Anyway, hello to you all! :)

I am Jennifer and I live in Belleville Ontario Canada. I have been a fan of GBS since the beginning however, I am not one to join fan based forums... until after the show last night!

My family is from Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia and my former partner was from Burgeo Newfoundland. This said, both of us were raised with a love of the traditional songs from the east coast.

Anyway, I won't sit here prattling on about me... but I am looking forward to getting to know some of you!

My First GBS song was Recruiting Sergeant that I used for a project on the music of WW1... beautiful song. I was then reintroduced to them a couple of times at college by a few different people and have had them as my favorite Pandora station for at least a year. When I heard from a friend that they were coming out to Olympia, (Seattle area) I had to check out the website and fourms.

Anyhow I'm a loyal Doylephile, an active fourm faerie, and I love comments and random chatter. My first two GBS concerts will be the late Nov. ones in Olympia and Edmonds (I have a seventh row seat for the latter!) and would love to hang out with OKPer's before or after the shows, or any other time.

"Donkey Riding" is a song I learned in 2nd grade, and the note under the title said it was a traditional Newfoundland chanty.

Been a GBS fan for ... well, late 90's anyway. My 2nd oldest daughter got me hooked. Now the boys are the most played music in the house.

Just caught the band in Buffalo, NY last week - sensational as always.

We got married two weeks ago and my lovely bride walked down the aisle with Graceful & Charming as the wedding music. It was a big hit!.
