    Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"

    I know, and it was ok, but for it suffers because of version of songs on there that I already knew, and do prefer over GBS's versions. Ron Hynes Tickle Cove Pond I like better, Sweet Forget Me Not ( and man did I hate GBS changing the title of the song ) I don't like at all.  I do prefer Connemara's version of the song. GBS's I just plain didn't like.  The Old Polina was cool, but I've heard John White and Fergus O'Byrne do their versions, and again I prefer those.  Cod Liver Oil was not bad, but again I prefer older versions, and a fairly recent version by Fine Crowd was quite good.  As for Harbour LeCou, always a good song, but Chris Andrews did a version 2-3 years ago on his solo album which I think is stellar.  The few newer tunes I hadn't heard were decent, like River Driver.

      As for Come and I will Sing You, again, a well known tune here and I have one other version from 8-9 years ago by Billy Diamond.

    So... I guess that, for me anyway, the album didn't show me a lot new, and what I did know I likedothyer versions of, so the album doesn't get much play. But hey, it introduced some NFLD tunes to you guys who were unfamiliar with them.  I hope GBS's trad output in the future digs a bit deeper tho in their research. :)

     I read here GBS may do Dermot's CandleLight and Wine or West Country Lady ( West would be better), and that would be great, but again, I suspect I'll like the original better.

    This is Dermot from a TV show about 20 years ago singing West Country Lady.

    One of Dermot's best songs; A Children's Winter. It isn't about Xmas but up here it is associated with Xmas. Done before by a few bands but GBS could do a nice job on this.

    Here's a few albums at this link that may be of interest to some of you guys. :)

    Re: New CD "Fortune's Favour" 6/24

    So, now it is really an official announcement.  Alan said in yesterday's FTR that the album WILL be released on June 24th in both the US and Canada.  No more confusion....except....

    When will the PRESALES start?????? Angel

    And of course there is still the BIG question:  What Will Be On the CD?

    between FTR's, Podcasts, and announcements at recent shows, it looks pretty good for the following six songs as near-definites:

    Walk on the Moon

    Straight to Hell

    Tonight

    Rocks of Merasheen

    Oh Yeah

    Shores of England

    -------------------------------

    and possibilities include:

    Say You Will

    Hold on For Your Life

    Where I Belong

    And it seems like they are working on tour dates, too.  Alan's FTR mentions Summer and Fall across the US and Canada.  So far, there are only 4 showing as confirmed on the GBS Tour page, but there are at least twice that posted elsewhere around the net, mostly in August and September.

    This will be an exciting spring as more news comes our way! Big Smile

    That's a real pity.  I honestly liked it even more than "Walk on the Moon" and "Tonight,"  and that's saying a lot.  Let's hope it makes it onto the next one.

    Muray also said or was it Bob... the song they're working on in the video from the studio that was sent out around the time of the Ships n Dips announcement will also be on it (kind of a given but just a reminder). I think it's called London lights or something like that.

    Ok, I thought I was losing it there for a bit... I see that this thread was originally posted way back in June of 2007.  Since the name of the new Great Big Sea album only came to light about a month ago, I wondered... "am I drinking cheap beer ? am I reading this right ? ... how could the subject line of this thread indicate the name of the new album ? ! " .... does Helen have physic powers ? !

    Then I finally clued in LOL, when you are the moderator you have the ability to change / edit the title of a thread.  I really thought Helen had special powers for a few seconds LOL.  I was going to ask her to give me the winning lotto numbers for tonight's draw up here in Canada nerd

    lol, Frosty! If I were THAT psychic, I would be playing the lottery too! .....  I wish!

    And I belive that besides not weilding any psychic powers, I wasn't weilding by moderator powers either.  Anyone who starts a thread can go back and edit the title of their OWN thread.  So, I figured that in order to put the name out there, I'd do just that.  I've been waiting to find out the details on this new CD for nearly a year!  I am just thrilled that we finally have some concrete info - a name a release date - woo hoo! Big Smile

    Now all i want to know is when is the PRE-SALE and what else will be on it!!!???!!

    He could have been pulling our legs but I really don't think so. He said that England was a metaphor for home and family.

    Ok, so it seems England's Shore is new, but in my mind it's not a proper GBS album without at least 2 trad tunes, and generally the title of the CD has been a song title on the album, the exceptions I think being PLAY and Road Rage. (Up had Goin Up)

    So Fortune's Favour? hmmmm I wonder.  A song they have not played in public? off to google that...

    Re: New CD "Fortune's Favour" 6/24

    It's well Googled. There's Fortunes Favour the solitaire card game, a racehorse, a poem by Robbie Burns in the 1700's with the words in it:

    My Father Was A Farmer

    1782
    Type: Song
    Tune: The weaver and his shuttle, O.

    My father was a farmer upon the Carrick border, O,
    And carefully he bred me in decency and order, O;
    He bade me act a manly part, though I had ne'er a farthing, O;
    For without an honest manly heart, no man was worth regarding, O.

    Then out into the world my course I did determine, O;
    Tho' to be rich was not my wish, yet to be great was charming, O;
    My talents they were not the worst, nor yet my education, O:
    Resolv'd was I at least to try to mend my situation, O.

    In many a way, and vain essay, I courted Fortune's favour, O;
    Some cause unseen still stept between, to frustrate each endeavour, O;
    Sometimes by foes I was o'erpower'd, sometimes by friends forsaken, O;
    And when my hope was at the top, I still was worst mistaken, O.

    Then sore harass'd and tir'd at last, with Fortune's vain delusion, O,
    I dropt my schemes, like idle dreams, and came to this conclusion, O;
    The past was bad, and the future hid, its good or ill untried, O;
    But the present hour was in my pow'r, and so I would enjoy it, O.

    No help, nor hope, nor view had I, nor person to befriend me, O;
    So I must toil, and sweat, and moil, and labour to sustain me, O;
    To plough and sow, to reap and mow, my father bred me early, O;
    For one, he said, to labour bred, was a match for Fortune fairly, O.

    Thus all obscure, unknown, and poor, thro' life I'm doom'd to wander, O,
    Till down my weary bones I lay in everlasting slumber, O:
    No view nor care, but shun whate'er might breed me pain or sorrow, O;
    I live to-day as well's I may, regardless of to-morrow, O.

    But cheerful still, I am as well as a monarch in his palace, O,
    Tho' Fortune's frown still hunts me down, with all her wonted malice, O:
    I make indeed my daily bread, but ne'er can make it farther, O:
    But as daily bread is all I need, I do not much regard her, O.

    When sometimes by my labour, I earn a little money, O,
    Some unforeseen misfortune comes gen'rally upon me, O;
    Mischance, mistake, or by neglect, or my goodnatur'd folly, O:
    But come what will, I've sworn it still, I'll ne'er be melancholy, O.

    All you who follow wealth and power with unremitting ardour, O,
    The more in this you look for bliss, you leave your view the farther, O:
    Had you the wealth Potosi boasts, or nations to adore you, O,
    A cheerful honest-hearted clown I will prefer before you, O.

    Or another poem from the 1820's called Better Thoughts

    I once did dream ‘twere sweet to be

    With humble fortune blest;

    That I could live alone for thee –

    Caressing and caressed

    That Fortune’s favour, fortune’s frown

    To me alike would prove;

    My every wish, my faith would crown,

    My wealth would be my love.

    The for thy sake I’d gladly leave

    A higher lot than mine;

    Not for those gilded pleasures grieve

    I could not share as thine.

    But thou this heart, or not desir’d,

    Or shunn’d to own the thought;

    By views of worldly interests fir’d

    That could not be so sought.

    Then fare thee well! Henceforth no sigh

    For thee shall leave my breast;

    No tear for thee bedew by eye,

    No passion mar my rest.

    Far other prospects now shall claim

    The tribute of my thought;

    Far other happiness my aim

    Than love had ever taught.

    The Muse, if she the gift wil deign,

    Sha now receive my heart;

    And Science, to my vanquished pain,

    Her solace sweet impart.

    By Ausonia

    Or something done more recently:

    FOOLISH YOU

    (words and music: Wade Hemsworth/Black Fly Music SOCAN)

    Foolish you, you want to go away
    Seeking fortune's favour on your own
    While the one who stays behind you,
    Foolish me, is left alone

    Sad and foolish that's how I feel
    Don't you know how fortune favours few
    Fortune's blind as blind as you my dear
    What a pity, oh foolish you

    Leaving me this way is hardly fair
    Must I go seek a fortune too
    Or must I wait till folly finds it's own way home
    To me and foolish you

    Sad and foolish....

    Loving you was good love was kind
    I didn't mind the payment's overdue
    For the price of loving is none too dear
    As long as I'm with foolish you

    Sad and foolish....

    I vote for the Robbie Burns one.
