Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
Currently listening to Radio Newfoundland. Someone's singing Rocks of Marasheen. I would never even have taken notice of the song if I hadn't heard Sean's version. I don't know who's singing this one but his version had no chance up against Sean's.

Fran, I agree completely! Sean's version is superb! Anne

Has Sean recorded this song? (Now that I have all the GBS albums, I'm working on collecting non-GBS albums where the boys sing.)

Whoops, must have missed that. Thanks! Hurray! I can't wait for June. And to have a recording of Walk on the Moon, which is already one of my favorite songs, even though I've only actually heard it twice! :-)

Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
Yeah, just wanted to chime in to say that "Rocks of Merasheen" is . . . just . . . I have no words.
I've LOVED this song for a while now; unfortunately, I only have a recording of it being sung by a girl soprano, which does NOT do it justice at all. I've wanted to hear it sung by a guy since I first heard it, ANY guy. Hearing Sean sing it was beyond every expectation. He is perfect for that vocal, sings it exactly as it should be sung. (But man, poor Sean always gets typecast as the repentant rover. He needs a new agent or something ;) This makes waiting for the new record that much more unbearable.

Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
Excellent Title, but NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! June 24th is too late!!!! My fiance and I are getting married on a boat on June 7th and Walk on the Moon is supposed to be our first dance song. It was going to be the acoustic Sea of No Cares until we heard Walk on the Moon on Ships & Dip III. It needs to be a GBS song; we talked all about the lads on our first date and he invited me to a GBS concert that night that was still 4 months away (we went and it was amazing!). Does anyone have a good version of Walk on the Moon or have the power to beg, borrow, buy or steal an early release of just that song?

Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
I seem to recall reading in one of the S&D strings that someone had a conversation w/ Louis and that there may be some singles released prior to the album release. Not sure which ones or when that might be, but crossing my fingers that it works out for you. Kim

Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
Sorry for the double post here, but on the topic of "Rocks of Merasheen", when I heard the chorus of that song on Friday night, the melody reminded me of another song when I heard it, I just couldn't place it. But then on the plane ride home yesterday, the other song popped in my head - "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Everyday". Did anyone else get that or am I just totally whacked? No worries, agreeing with the later is perfectly acceptable. Kim

Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
Welcome to the group! Congrats on your wedding. Not to impose or anything, but here's something you might not have thought of: Sweet Forget Me Not off of The Hard and the Easy also works perfectly as a first-dance song. If it was me, I'd go with that. Give it a listen, if you haven't already.

Interesting title. And now that there's FINALLY a tentative release date, we have something to look forward to!

McGinty does a cool version of Merasheen as well. I have it on cassette--it's a copy of a compilation called Taste of the Maritimes.

Re: New Album "Fortune's Favour"
I have to chime in when I see Merasheen, as my Dad is from Merasheen. ( Right Anne! :) ) First off, my Grandmother hates the song due to the cheating element of the lyrics. I like it myself. I've heard Dad and my Uncle sing it many times. Ryan's Fancy's version from 1973 is awesome, and a great cd from 1983 ( and again, I question how many GBS fans would enjoy some very trad NFLD music, but I hope some would ) Towards the Sunset by Pat and Joe Byrne with Baxter Wareham has Rocks...on it, another great version. That album is stunning anyways. So, GBS's take on the song intrigues me, as does GBS doing Downtown Girl. How would it be different from the Irish Descendants version, and how about JIm Fidler helping on the tune? :) I hope the album is cool, because I haven't really enjoyed a whole GBS album in about 8-9 years, just a few songs here and there. Their pop stuff doesn't appeal to me much.
Cheers! Futon

But the Hard & the Easy isn't pop at all, it's all traditional!
