When you anger a seal hunt protester
As I've mentioned before paul watson of sea shepherd and I exchange emails as I disagree with his methods of protest and his bigotry towards NFLD. I always direct my emails to him, but he forwards mine to his followers, I guess to try and get on my nerves, which it doesn't btw. These emails only prove to me the mindset behind these protesters, that some of them are nasty people. Here's a nice one. I responded firmly but poilitely btw. Excuse the launguage in this email, but this is how they respond. *** You are a complete jerk off and you must have a negative IQ. You should at least do a bit of reseach and make sure you've got your facts right before trying to put yourself forward as some sort of expert on the seal hunt. And to say Sea Shepherd would be sorry if the hunt was banned because they would lose their donations. Do you think people like Captain Paul Watson wouldn't rather be doing other things with their life? From the sound of your e-mail to him you just don't think at all. Why don't you crawl back into whatever hole you crawled out of, you don't seem to have anything intelligent to say. What a waste of space! **** futon again. Laughable stuff.

Seems to me they're the ones that need to do research past the 1970's, when the protesters actually had a valid point!

Re: When you anger a seal hunt protester
Teri, I am not all together sure the protestors in the '70's had any more of a point than they do now. Had *anyone* besides the seal hunters done their research they would have realized what an unchecked seal population would have done to the cod stocks. That and the off shore factory ships have done much more damage to the NFLD cod stocks than the fishers themselves...yet the fishers continue to take the flack. Not to mention the horror Stories ( and I do believe that they are greatly exagerated fiction, if not out and out lies) of seal pups being skinned alive and such. Given the conditions under which many of htese folks lived the first man getting caught skinning anything alive would have been summarily dealt with by other sealers. NOT because it gave them a bad name but because anyone callous enough to skin even a rat alive would have been much more of a threat to a human than to a seal. They depended on each other for their lives and one sick enough to do that would not have been able to be counted on. Seriously. The amount of hype and hyperbole on the side of the protestors is amazing and has been for thirty years or more. Futon does an amazing job of battling Paul Watson and explaining to the rest of us where main stream media has gotten it wrong. ( I do wonder if they've gotten anything right on this issue). I thank him for that.

Re: When you anger a seal hunt protester
Apparently, it's not only the fishermen who are taking heat for the seal hunt now. A lady who runs a bed and breakfast in Fogo (I think) called a local radio phone-in show a couple of days ago. She had received a lovely email from a couple in Vancouver. They could no longer return to her bed and breakfast due to the seal hunt. Not only that, they hoped that when the next tsunami hits, it takes Newfoundland and they wouldn't weep about it. How's that for juvenile.

OMG!! That's a terrible thing to say. Absolutely terrible!! I'm shocked that people say such terrible things like that. No matter what your politics you should never wish a natural disater on someone.

What goes around comes around, the low lifes who sent that email will find it comes back to bite them one way or another.

Re: When you anger a seal hunt protester
I say we hunt them down and wash their mouths out with soap for being so nasty. Or, or, like, we could, like, put a bag of flaming doggie doo on their doorstep.... or, or like, something equally JUVENILE... Yeah, THAT'S the ticket!
Who are these people and where are their momma's? 'Cuz I'm gonna hunt them down and fine them for failure to teach the right way to interact with fellow human beings!
Ok, seriously, the internet seems to have given some people the impression that you can say ANYTHING to a total stranger, and you don't have to be held accountable for your behavior.... I hope their karma comes around and bites them on the @ss.
Futon, you are a better person than I am to continue to fight the good fight. Huzzah!

Being originally from the West coast, I am pretty sure my memory serves correct when I say, "Isn't Vancouver on the Pacific OCEAN??" I don't know that wishing a tsunami on Newfoundland, is that bright....what is that saying about people who live in glass houses? Pretty bold (and stupid) a statement from people who could quite possibly encounter that same fate oneday...freak natural disasters can hit both coasts, I am sure. Pretty disturbing that our own countrymen can be so easily duped by American propaganda. D.

Re: When you anger a seal hunt protester
Futon, Keep up the good fight. Know that there are those who are reasonable, but they aren't the ones spouting off dramatized opinions, nor are they the ones wanting to be the centre of attention.
I'm not from anywhere near a coast - in fact, I've never seen an ocean, but I grew up on a farm. There are way better jobs out there, but for some people they are doing what they know how to do to put food on the table.
Leave any middle-of-the-food-chain animal population unchecked and there can be mass devastation on food supplies which support economies that are dependent on them.
Good luck!

Re: When you anger a seal hunt protester
Newfoundland has already been hit by a tsunami. In 1929, a tidal wave (tsunami) devestated the Burin Peninsula on the south coast of Newfoundland. Over 40 communities were struck, affecting 800 families. So those people whomever they are should be careful what they wish for.

Re: When you anger a seal hunt protester
Point of information question, not an accusation- didn't they used to hunt baby seals for their fur? I hate not having my information right, and before I sign any more petitions on any side I want my facts straight. I'm always willing to protest real cruelty to animals- or humans for that matter- and killing something for a single body part qualifies in my book. Hunting for food is another matter entirely and something I will fight just as fiercely to defend. Well, with certain exceptions, which are generally based on the intelligence of the individuals involved. (The NRA calls the AK-47 a hunting weapon. Last I knew Godzilla was staying in Japan.) As for the type of idiots who send that kind of e-mail, I find my delete button solves the problem admirably. And I would never dream of mocking them mercilessly to my friends. Not me. Nope. Never.
