I just searched for a thread about a movie I just watched, "The Shipping News," but there hasn't been much mention of it around here for years.  It was released in 2001, but lately, it has been on Encore very frequently, so I thought I'd bring it up again.  My Mom had watched and enjoyed it the other day, and she mentioned it to me because most of the movie is set in Newfoundland.  I was stunned when I was watching it to find out that most of the soundtrack is Great Big Sea!

While it is not the greatest movie I have ever seen, it was definitely enjoyable, and the soundtrack can't be beat.

Next, I'm off to the library to get a copy of the book.  If anyone has Encore, keep your eyes open for it.  It's worth watching and absolutely worth listening to!

Thanks for the heads up!  I saw the movie quite some time ago - LURV Kevin Spacey  - it'll be good to see it again.  I don't think I had been introduced to GBS at the time I saw it, so it'll add a whole new experience to watching a movie I've already seen!

I watched the movie a year or so ago. I recognized the tunes during the scenes in the cafe, but didn't really think it was GBS, until I checked the end credits. And then had to go back and watch most of the movie again to catch them all.

I remember seeing, somewhere in a posting by Alan, that it was supposed to be one song, but the filmmakers decided to add more tunes to add a little more cheer to the movie.

I've meant to watch that movie, but I never got around to it. Maybe I will now.

I read the book this past Spring and loved it.  Then I rented the movie and flipped when I heard GBS.  At first I thought nah can't be, but then I heard another tune and knew for sure.  Visually the movie is truely beautiful and it didn't lose some of the good parts from the book. You don't need to be a fan of Great Big Sea to enjoy it either.  I give both a thumbs up !

Bob's take on this book was "She won the Pulitzer, but she didn't get it."   Their music may have been used, but I doubt the Band really enjoyed this production.

I saw this movie a while back and recently came across the book in a second hand bookstore...so I bought it and TRIED to read it...and tried again and again. Sitting on my shelf now with only about a third read and no desire to finish it. Strange read. Not in the topic so much...the STYLE of writing. Maybe I know why it was in that second hand bookstore now...or maybe it's just me and I need to stick to Jodi Picoult...lol.

Thank you, Darci. I think I tried to read this book two or three times before I knew of the GBS connection with the film. Watched the film several years ago and then tried to go at the book again. I can't bust through the first 30 pages or so. It's just too strange for me. Too much work to follow it. Maybe I should stick with Dan Brown .... I haven't gone back to watch the movie again to appreciate the GBS tunes. Something about the movie makes me think, I'll wait a little longer.

On the flipside, after I learned about "Young Triffie," I tried to rent it and couldn't find it, so I bought it. I've watched it three times and thought it was pretty funny every time. Nice tune at the end, too.

 And I bought the Puffins Nintendo game for my kids. I smile when I hear it from the backseat of the car. some of those games can drive me nuts. It's almost soothing to hear the notes Alan picked for this little gem.

It's fun when they dabble in other media but I can't wait to see what they do in the recording studio this winter...

The book is easier to read a second time (if you make it through the first round). I'd read it when I was younger, and then I had to do a detailed study on it a few years ago for and English class. I found it easier to understand when you're picking it apart and questioning everything. But most people just read for pleasure, not to pull the layers apart and examine them and write essays on them. She wasn't very flattering to Newfoundland though. I found it hard to associate the book with the places I had seen.

I found the flow of her writing difficult as well but I did adjust eventually.  I find that with books like that you have to just keep reading and then you'll catch a flow. Overall it wasn't very flattering to Newfoundland and yet at the same time it was.  It covers what the B'ys sing about...leaving.  Her characters come back to their roots and it becomes home again.  I loved it.  She wrote a book called Acordian Wars which I thought I'd try thinking hey Newfoundland and now Bob but it was so depressing I stopped reading it, picked it up again, put it down, then just skipped to the end and realized what a waste it was..eck !
