Re: Why I love where I live
Nope, no need to say more. I love NYC too. The theatres, museums, markets and restaurants, shopping, central park, dodging taxis, hailing taxis, the skyline, the ocean, the statue of liberty, the spirit of liberty... I only wish I could spend more time there. Love it.

Re: Why I love where I live
I am a lifelong New Jersey resident, and I love it here! I never want to live anywhere else. We are not just Newark Airport and oil refineries, as some might think. There's a reason we are called The Garden State- the western and southern parts of NJ are full of farmland! There's a cattle farm five minutes from my house, and several very wealthy people keep their horses fifteen minutes away. We are halfway between New York City and Philadelphia. I prefer NYC, as I've lived closer to there my whole life and know that city much better. Also, NYC has my Yankees! We also have, as those who were in AC last weekend saw, a thriving Shore area, with beautiful beaches. We are also a very diverse state. One school district I worked in had students who spoke 27 different languages in their homes! This was in a small suburb, too, not a big city. Really, what's not to love here?

Re: Why I love where I live
I live in Massachusetts also, and I have to say that I love my house, my neighborhood, the Atlantic Ocean is 5 blocks away, I can see Bostons skyline 12 miles away, Cape Cod, Western Mass, The Berkshires, etc., I could go on and on, but I just wish there was a way to take all of this beauty with me and move it all OUTSIDE of Massachusetts. As far as "getting away", if you ever find yourself travelling along the Baccalieu Trail in Newfoundland, be sure to head all the way to Grates Cove at the end of Route 70 where you'll see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the area. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxzzdjfhI5A See you in Portland !

What a stunning series of photos and music. Nicely done! Reminds me of Gull Island. Same section of the peninsula. Anne

Re: Why I love where I live
Haivng always complained about where I live, I'm taking this as a challenge. The Niagara region is too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, too muddy in the spring and the fall (my favourite season) is just too short. This gives us an endless source of conversation. We have Niagara Falls and Niagara on the lake. We have history. We have world-class wines. We can produce almost everything you'd put on your table. We don't have oceans nearby but we do have two fair-sized lakes. Sailing vessels of all kinds and from all ports can come and go at any time. I've had friends who lived on their sailboats and friends who've dated the sailors they only get to see as they come through the canal. The people are generally friendly and are increasingly diverse. The arts are appearing more and more as well. We don't have any 'big cities' with their urban ammentities but those aren't far away. I've actually come to appreciate the separation as I've aged. We have the white-colllar types and the blue-collar types and they keep each other balanced. We have the franchises everyone else has and we have the locally owned businesses. I've always lived here and I used to hate that I couldn't go anywhere without running into someone who knew me, or my parents, or my grandparents, or my old neighbours...I've since met people without that problem and appreciate my belonging to a community. I knew what my grandmother's favourite flowers were and went to the funeral of my old school bus driver who loved to hear me sing in church. I go into the locally-owned cafe and the owner gives me a hug and asks about my family; each one of them. This may feel like the middle of nowhere sometimes but everywhere is just around the corner. It's not so bad

Re: Why I love where I live
My city is always the butt of some joke, but I've got to say that I love it here. Somehow, Buffalo has gotten a reputation as a terrible place to live, but that couldn't be any further from the truth. People who aren't from around here look at me like I'm crazy when I say that I love the weather here, but I really do. I love the four distinct seasons and everything that comes with them. I love that the summers get hot enough to be a hot, steamy summer, but the heat is never excruciating like it is some places. I love the lake effect snow storms rolling over the lake towards us. We may not be a huge city, but we're far from being the dead city that so many people think of us as. There are so many things to love about living in or around Buffalo. Buffalo can be a beautiful, lively city, but so many people don't even think to look.

Re: Why I love where I live
Olympia, of all the places I've lived this feels the most like home. I've always joked that Olympia was a college town with a capital in it, really the college is a recent addition to the town only built in '67 (It's younger than Bob.) But really the downtown area of Olympia is really unique in that there are only a small handful of businesses that are not locally owned. We have more places with vegetarian and vegan options than anywhere I've ever been. And then there's the artisan well water that is the lifeblood of this city. Once upon a time it was "the water" used for making Olympia beer. It is now brewed in Texas and not worth opening the can. There is a dozen or so parks scattered throughout the city and old growth trees are only a few miles away. The people are incredibly friendly and always eager to lend a hand. I love this place. It's home. Peace, Love, and GBS, Loula

Re: Why I love where I live
I can't say that I love where I currently live. The DFW area hasn't exactly been friendly or beautiful, but you go where the jobs are--and make enough money to vacation far far away! :) In the past , I have, however, lived in some very beautiful places. When I lived in southern New Mexico I was roughly 20 miles from one of the largest white sand beaches (sans water) in the world. If you went 20 miles the other direction, you could hop on the lift and hit the ski slopes. There are beautiful mountains with gorgeous valleys filled with lovely trees--a real treat in the Fall, as most of the Southwest doesn't really show the changes in the seasons. There are soooo many hiking possibilities--from wilderness hiking and day tripping to mountain climbing and spelunking. Camping is great. Many sites are kept primative so that you aren't overrun with RVs and such. There are lots of cool Native American settlements that you can visit: Gila Cliff Dwellings, Bandelier National Monument, Taos Pueblo and many more. They are all over the state. It is pretty cool to be able to climb down into a Kiva that was used by people who lived almost a millenia ago. New Mexican food is also something that you need to experience. The subtle uses of green chili in the most unexpected ways is always a pleasant surprise. The interesting mix of Spanish and Native American cooking cultures makes for a fun food adventure. For my fellow nerds, there are numerous museums, historic sites and quirky celebrations: Carlsbad Caverns, Sunspot observatory, the Trinity Site, Lincoln County Days (Billy the Kid stuff), the Albuquerque Balloon Festival, Deming Duck Races, Pancho Villa State Park, the Space Hall of Fame, Taos Solar Music Festival and many many others. Those were just off of the top of my head. The Santa Fe opera is something to be experienced--watching Faust being performed in the cool night air of a New Mexican summer with desert thunderstorms as the backdrop is simply amazing. There are several lakes to enjoy as well. My water experiences weren't positive. So, I will spare you my Griswold holiday report. :) Pardon the stream of consciousness style. :) ...and I didn't even mention the bajillion things there are to do in and around Albuquerque. You could spend an entire year and never make it around the whole (relatively small) state. :)

Re: Why I love where I live
I love living in Edmonton - there's a reason it's called the festival city - so much to do in the summer. But I have to admit, the place I loved living the most was London. Such history around the corner. I loved going for walks in "the City". You can walk around, and you think you're lost, and you turn a corner and there's St. Paul's, or a tube station, or the Thames. A friend of mine and I would walk from St. Paul's all the way to Oxford Circus just to relax after work. Loved, loved, LOVED that city.

Re: Why I love where I live
I love NW Ontario for the trees. I'm a big time nature girl. I love trees, rocks, bears, lakes, pinecones, assorted wild animals. I love that I can hop in my car and drive north for an hour and be in a totally isolated community. I love fishing and hiking through the bush. Love camp. I love snowmachines and boats. I love going out for a day to explore abandonned camps and logging communities. I even love the tourists that bring so much money and meaning to our community. But of course, I would like to live elsewhere for awhile. Then I'll really love this area.
And we wake up in the breakdown of the things we never thought we could be...
