TeaResa, you don’t need to travel overseas, you just need to
travel around to your local microbrewery for a high quality, tasty beer.
People traditionally have said American beers don’t match
with those in other countries because the big brewers make only light American
lagers, made with corn & rice, not malt (it’s cheaper). I won’t go into the
whole history here, but it has a lot to do with the ability to drink a couple
quick pints & go back to work in a semi-sober condition. The big beer brewers adjusted accordingly, brewing the flavor
right out of their beers, & maximizing their profits. Thankfully, over the
last few decades, microbrewers have flourished from the East to West Coast &
brought flavor back to the American beer landscape.
I used to think I hated beer because it had no flavor. Now, thanks to my initiation at the High Street
Brewery in Eugene, OR, many, many years ago, I now know what real
beer is. Consequently, I am a proud
home-brewer & have been judging at the Michigan State Fair Homebrew Competition
for the last couple years. Trust me, American beers can now, finally, hold their
own & far surpass any beer abroad. Amen!
