Re: Has 'Something Beautiful' happened to you today?

Thanks for the well wishes ladies. I came home from the best concert we've ever performed tonight (5th in a series of 6 shows) to find an email from Little Kids Rock.

    Dear Anne,

Congratulations!  We have finished reviewing the hundreds of 2009 Song Writing Contest submissions and one of your students is among the winners!  Nyeemah has won a first place prize of either a full or 3/4 size  Fender™ acoustic guitar for her song "Recess Love"!

How about that!!!!!!! Something beautiful indeed!

Three in a row!!!!! I cannot believe that after all the other great things happening this week, today I received their PSSA scores 2 months earlier than usual. I was almost afraid to look at them, but discovered that a large majority of the kids in my class scored Proficient in either Math, Reading or Writing. In fact, almost all my guitar kids scored proficient across the board as well as the chess kids! I had 6 in the class who earned an Advanced rating in Math! And no one scored Below Basic in Writing - not one kid!

Wow! I am loving the week! One Beautiful Week!

Re: Has 'Something Beautiful' happened to you today?

I have a great marriage.  GBSteve's b-day was last week and Father's day was yesterday.  Money's a bit tight right now ('though when isn't it?!) and we swore when we got married that we wouldn't put ourselves into debt buying gifts for each other - no credit cards (unless they'll be paid off when the bill comes in).  So, GBSteve got novel and a couple little things and we opened the piggy bank to go to the zoo as a family.  Simple, lovely, satisfying.

Just in case I didn't truly appreciate how nice this was, our friend called hubby at work and asked what I bought him for his b-day/FD.  Then responded with "that's it? after what she got for her birthday and Christmas?" (they're a couple weeks apart and the gifts I got amounted to more money spent). Instead of letting this get to him, hubby and I talked about it at dinner and decided 'friend' was in the wrong and we were better people for not allowing a price tag to define our relationship.

    Lucky Me!

Re: Has 'Something Beautiful' happened to you today?

There's no Subie tires that smoulder, no driving off the shoulder, that Random Acts of Kindness couldn't cure:

My Subaru was in an accident last week.

Landscape materials fell off a truck in front of my husband.  He swerved, ran over something, blew a tire, went off the road, down an embankment, nearly rolled it, but was able to control it.   There was damage to the rear wheel mount, strut, shock, hub assembly, ABS brake lines, and two blown (shredded) tires.  It was going to cost over a thousand dollars to fix  - but my wonderful, awesome Subie Specialist repaired it for only about half the price, and even let me pick up my car before I could pay the entire bill (unheard of!).

While my car was in the shop, my neighbors loaned me a spare vehicle to get to work, but I ended up with one day, yesterday, that I couldn't get in.

My boss, who is running a very tight budget, gave me a paid day off.

These people turned a nearly catastrophic situation into Something Beautiful!

Re: Has 'Something Beautiful' happened to you today?

Work ran short again, so yesterday I went to visit some friends, since they were having a party - including a full-costume production of Henry V (with authentic music) in the back yard!  We started hearing the French cannons a few acts in, but they got through the "band of brothers" speech (the best part of the whole play) before they called the remainder for safety because it was raining too hard.  The thunder roared at quite a few very apropos moments - it was a heck of a special effect!  I started singing "Non Nobis Domine" while lugging the stuff inside, and at least the guy behind me had seen the movie and chimed in.  The guy who played Henry was such an awesome actor that I was annoyed with myself with admiring such a reckless macho maniac by the time we were all good and soaked.  Weather or no weather, there's nothing quite like Henry V!  Especially while you're chowing on tasty food, sipping a beer, and enjoying it with an audience who laugh, cheer, snort, and gasp at all the good bits.

    Love, Columbine

Re: Has 'Something Beautiful' happened to you today?

Recent Canadian legislation requires all mobile equipment (forklift, reach truck, tugger, etc.) operators to be recertified in order to have up-to-date records.  I have been a trainer/evaluator in this area for over a decade at my workplace.  Now all certification is done by an outside source (which is another something beautiful!).

Happy to report that I have gotten perfect (100%) on all practical and theory applications on all applicable machinery.  I guess I get to keep my job.  Yay!

After all the testing my trainer was a bit perturubed that not only did I score prefect in my areas but I answered the sections of the test that I didn't need to and was without error there too.  What I think really bugged him was when I challenged him on a couple of points, he had to look them up and I was right.

Nothing against the instructor.  He was trained perfectly to do what he needs to.  And one of the better presenters I've ever had to listen to.

But to score perfect all around in this area is hard, especially on the theory parts.

    Thought I'd brag a little.

But I know I'm going to do it again!
    Oh Yeah!

Re: Has 'Something Beautiful' happened to you today?

It stopped raining!  So we went out bargain-hunting, and I found some great books, a gorgeous dress, a hoodie that seems to be made out of Security Blanket, and some new tea tow accessories for my gourmet granite tofu press (that I swiped out of the park).  Going to a musical tonight!

Love hearing that hubby is getting better. I especially understand about being able to mow the lawn. We've had rain almost every day and SOME parts have been mowed , some not. Looks kinda funny right now. Happy 4th!
