    Butter Tarts!

Hello OKPers! On a recent trip to Vancuver, the husband and I became quite enamored with butter tarts. I've found some fairly simple recipes online, but I've never really gotten into making my own crust. Any hints on how to make dough/get it in the tin without rolling, or some good frozen varieties?

    Re: Butter Tarts!

I use the Tenderflake tart shells when I make tarts...it's not often that I have the patience these days to make pastry from scratch.  That and I have a tiny little kitchen and no kitchen table to sit at so I can make the pastry.

Or, if you have a Costco/Price Cutters/whatever nearby where you can get the big boxes of tart shells you can freeze them and just make the filling when you want and then throw however many shells you filled into the oven and you are good to go!

I like the recipe on the tenderflake box. Yeah it's lard, I am one of the Two fat ladies doncha know! Just watch that you don't over flour or over mix. pastry needs a light hand and little mixing.  butter tarts are a gift from the gods, a moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips!

I usually buy my tart shells too... you find them in the frozen isle... you just pre bake them for about 5 minutes before you put the yummy goodness in and bake again... =D

So this has nothing to do with anything, but I have to say how much it amuses me that when you scroll down the main OKP page at the right speed, the title of this tread blends together with "Why I Love Where I Live" from the Run Runaway section and every time I read "Why I Love Butter Tarts!"  *snork*

    Re: Butter Tarts!

There could BE a Why I Love Butter Tarts thread.  I could wax poetic for HOURS about why I love butter tarts.  But it would bore the snot out of you all, and frankly, the butter tarts aren't that interested either.  So I will just quietly love them and keep it to myself.

(but not with raisins.  I must have gotten sick on raisins when I was a kid, because I physically can not swallow raisins.  The gag reflex kicks in and I just can't get 'em down.)

    Re: Butter Tarts!

I've learned two things this week on these boards...one good and one bad...

First the bad, I never knew the word newfie was a derogatory term...I can't recall if I've ever used or had the occasion to, but if I have I will never used that "n" word again.

The good...BUTTER TARTS...I've never heard of them before so I did some searching for recipes, found one that sounded good and made them last night...The only change I made was I used the filling to put in leftover frozen tart shells I bought at Costco for something else...They were awesome!

I have never had a butter tart.

    Suddenly I feel deprived!

Butter tarts are one of my favourite treats!  When I'm feeling down I scarf one of these down...almost better than chocolate Wink
