    GreatBigSean

Has anyone else noticed the lyrical and rhyming nature of Sean's recent tweets?  My curiosity is piqued, for sure.  What in fact will be revealed?  And what of the tears?  Any of you have inside info?

The rhyming thing isn't anything new for Sean.  He does it quite often.

Is it just me or does anyone else think Sean's depressed?  If his current Tweets (God, that's a stupid word) are a sample of his lullabies, then something's not right.  I wouldn't sing about razors to MY kids!

    Re: GreatBigSean

Certainly sounds like it from the snippets he's put in his tweets.  But he's shown a dark side before, and these snippets are out of context, for sure.  Folks who were on the last cruise heard at least one of his lullabies and really like it.  Maybe this is the project he's been working on while Alan is galavanting out in movieland?  If he's looking for ways for us to hear his project, I'm sure we'd all have ideas.  Maybe a few shows?  Maybe some videos?

     Thoughts?

Maybe these aren't necessarily meant for (anybody's) kids, but are done in lullaby style? I think that would be really cool if that's the case.

I hesitate to speculate on the state of his mental health. It's a very private thing. I understand the concern, but perhaps it's best to let him bring that up himself if it's relevant?

Looks like LeglessCats may be correct in that they are in Lullabye style--darn..I was really hoping to have something I could play in the nap room at my day care--trying to figure out if a GBS song is for all ages is tooooo taxing, unless I stick to just their instrumentals!

    Re: GreatBigSean

Perhaps it does come from his state of mind but I think he's been writing these for a long time. If you think about it, traditionally children's lullabyes/nursery rhymes/fairy tales are black. Babies falling out of trees, Jack & Jill breaking their crowns, Grandma getting eaten by a wolf. Ring Around the Rosey (or Ring, A Ring of Roses, however you sing it) is about dying of the plague. It's a very modern/Disney thing to sugar-coat everything for children. Children were told of the realities of life through stories and songs. It may sound depressing to modern ears but what he's Twittered is a Lullabye in the traditional sense.

Ah, the Disney empire...ruining lullabies and fairy tales for the past billion years now :) (or so it seems!)

Stories for children haven't really been pleasant until recently. It's heavily dependent on the originating culture just what they meant or were used for. Most were just to quiet the child, but a lot were prayers or blessings. Some folklorists theorize that the English "lullaby" was a corruption of "Lilith-bye" and that mothers would sing a protective song over their children to keep them safe from Lilith, who could otherwise sneak in and take them in the night. Consider that these mothers were raising their children a very long time ago, when health was a very poorly understood concept and so were pest control and nutrition, and many children would get ill and/or die very suddenly and strangely. The poor nutrition and rampant illness also fed heavily into frighteningly realistic delusions, which would validate the mothers' fears of evil. (I blame the lack of Scientific method for this.) Authentic lullabies that now sound very disturbing were probably not so frightening to children 500 years ago, whose reality was lots of death, lots of weather exposure, hunting, war, and powerful religious figures. Many are actually fakes...

Stories we think of as "for children" now also were very much intended for adults previously. The Grimm collection is pretty similar to the Flintstones now--intended to entertain bored, wealthy adults, but passed on to children later because the format seemed fitting. Now they just generally don't show Fred and Wilma smoking and pretend like they never advertised for Winston (take your vitamins instead), just like modern tale collectors pretend that the Grimms were not misogynist, crude, and horribly classist. Well, you can still see all of that, but it's quite toned down :)

Not to derail this with facts on folklore or anything... I do quite like Sean's twittering. Does anyone else?

I can't wait to hear them.  In the Courage, Patience and Grit DVD there was a video of Sean singing a lullabye while Bob slept - Left me wanting more. Much More!!

    Re: GreatBigSean

How did I miss Sean singing lullabies on that DVD?

More importantly, how did I miss a sleeping Bob? :O ...well, for possibly the third year in a row now, time to beg the husband for a Great Big Sea anniversary gift. I figure he has to comply because this one will be our first wedding anniversary and divorce is more expensive than most DVDs. Sound logic, no?

If I remember correctly, it wasn't on the actual DVD, it was part of a series of outtakes that used to be on the site for viewing.
