Incredible St. Patty’s Day Windsor Show

It was the best concert I’ve ever seen.

Spirit of the West opened up with a spirited, fun-filled set. I’ve heard them many times on CBC Radio 2, & it was great to finally see them live. Everyone in the group is fantastic, but their drummer (Vince R. Ditrich), especially, is unbelievable. I bought both their CDs at the swag table & can’t wait to dig in.

Then came Great Big Sea, who outdid themselves. From the moment they opened with “Donkey Riding” to the encore finale of “The Old Black Rum” with Spirit of the West, it was high energy, high intensity, with almost no break, almost no time to catch your breath. It seemed like they wouldn’t – or perhaps couldn’t – stop. Everyone around me was thoroughly exhausted by the time it was all said & done. I can’t imagine how the guys felt after performing. Incredible!

Perhaps it was a function of St. Patty’s Day Confused creating an especially lugubrious atmosphere. Perhaps it was attending a concert in Canada, but last night was different than any concert I’ve attended. The crowd’s energy & the band’s energy created a synergistic effect that seemed to bind everyone together to the point where we all moved & breathed together. The set list was practically a perfect mix of old, new, & everything in-between. (Anyone note the tunes played?) And, the venue didn’t show many break-in period flaws in this, its first concert. Amazing.

Other than Shorock’s thread with his fabulous video of the finale (thanks for sharing – your crowd shots really give the feel & spirit of a GBS concert!), I’ve seen neither hide nor hair’s mention of the show last night.  http://www.greatbigsea.com/forums/thread/145199.aspx Any other thoughts?

I thought it was the best concert I’ve ever seen.

    I couldn't agree with you MORE>>>>>

i have seen GBS three times now all in Windsor and this was the best i have ever seen! The energy of the band and the crowd is difficult to explain, it was hypnotic. I can hardly speak today and my hands are sore from clapping and getting carried away in the night (and i was the sober one).....

I knew it would be a great event, and what a way to break in The new WFCU centre....Way to go guys...Truly awesome, i can't wait till you come back again.....

Good luck with the rest of the tour.

    Cheers.

Embarrassed [:$] Re: Incredible St. Patty’s Day Windsor Show

I agree. It was the best show I've ever seen. We finally got great seats & were close enough to be star struck! They are the best & having Spirit of The West with them makes it even greater. I was close to tears listening to Sean sing Danny Boy, what an awsome job. Well done lads! Can't wait to see you again in Windsor. We've got some awsome pictures but I have no idea how to post them!

I have to agree, the show last night friggin rocked. It was definitely the most high intensity concert I've been to. Spirit of the West was great, but GBS really blew me away. Can't wait until they come back to Windsor again! Maybe next St. Patty's Day???

Re: Incredible St. Patty’s Day Windsor Show

Yup twas a great show.  GBS were up and the crowd enjoyed most of the show.

Too bad I got stuck beside and in front of fans who didn't know how to behave though.  The girls beside me yelled to each other in conversation the whole show and during Sean's acapella rendition of Danny Boy many in the back of the fan seats and in the stands either clapped in the middle and/or asked loudly, "what is this?", amongst other things.  I think many there were in fact not GBS fans but in fact Windsorites out for the evening checking out their new arena.  The level of loud chatter during Spirit Of The West made me go out for a smoke.  I just tried to block out the rudeness during GBS, too bad I didn't get to enjoy Sean's song for his Dad though.

There was a couple beach balls being bounced about on the floor for awhile during the GBS segment and some people on the floor - I'm thinking of a guy 6 rows in front of me to be specific - were actually spikeing the balls downward at people's heads.  I got hit in the back of the head by someone else.

St. Patrick's Day is not a exuse for rudeness is it folks?

Thanks to GBS and Spirit Of The West for a spirited performance.

It was a fantastic  concert, and a really special night for me and my two sons ... through very good fortune, we got to meet the guys before the concert.  I was so impressed that all of them -- but especially Alan -- were so kind and thoughtful to my little boys, and that they would take that time and care with some of their youngest fans right before the show.  My sons will remember that concert for the rest of their lives, I think ... and I certainly will too.   Great guys, great music, great show.

Amazing, amazing show.  I've seen upwards of 25 now, and the St Pat's show is definitely in the top 3.  Does anyone have a set list? There is one song I'm missing when I go through my pictures (all 426 of them!).  It was the "something old" that Alan mentioned - paired up in a way with something from FF.  The whole night is both amazingly clear and a little blurry. ;)

Glad you liked the crowd video which I put up before going to bed that night. Now that I'm home in Kansas, I've posted 100 of my best photos from that memorable evening. Check them out at http://shorock.com/gbs. Enjoy!
