For me, it has to be Lucky Me and Something Beautiful...I can't get halfway through either song without tears flowing down my face and I have no idea why....

Thought about this some more last night and realized that EVERY SINGLE GBS SONG that has sentimental value, makes me cry...

I've also discovered that 'The Way You Wanted Me' and 'Raewyn' do that to me as well!

My dad passed away about three and a half years ago and I still can't quite listen to "The Chemical Worker's Song." He was a pipefitter and he helped to build a lot of the big plants around Ontario (the nuclear plant in Darlington, the Honda plant in Alliston, and a cornucopia of oil refineries and petrochemical manufacturing plants). He would often have to wear full neoprene or rubber suits at work for protection. The things he breathed turned his lungs black.

On the other hand, "Ordinary Day" ALWAYS puts me back in my right mind. Never fails. There's something to be said about writing like that.

There are others, but those are probably the two extremes.

Welcome to the OKP, ecomuggle! Interesting name. You'll have to tell us about it.

I have listened to Consequence Free and Sea of No Cares way too many times this past week to keep me on an even keel. Ordinary Day wasn't working! exclaim And for some reason, The Old Polina has become a comfort song. Go fig.

But to beat the Old Polina, b'ys, was something they could NOT! Not real surprising! Plus, it's just a fun song - I find myself throwing in cheerleading lines in between lines...

"...the terror of the sea..." Yeah, RIGHT.
"...came plunging through the stream..." You Go!
"...tried to beat the bloody lot..." Nice try.
"...and to our wives so fair..." Oh, them? laugh

    Re: Songs by GBS

i think a shorter list would be which songs of theirs i don't like.

But "Sally Ann", believe it or not, is a special little song.

My Mum has Alzheimer's Disease- she's in a nursing home now, but she wasn't when i first got "Something Beautiful*". Whenever i had it in the CD player and she was in the car with me, Mum would smile and laugh when "Sally Ann" came on.

One of her cats was named Saliann- hence the connection she made- but it was nice to see her reacting to something that way. She heard it so often that she even started singing along to it quietly (you had to be really listening to hear her).

5 years ago, hearing my Mum sing along to a song wouldn't have been at all surprising, but she rarely ever does it now, so it was pretty ... significant.

The fact that the song is about Alan's young niece only adds to the experience for me.

"Take my heart, take my hand, oh Sally Ann,
Life can be just what you make it!"
    Your witty slogan here.

Wow what an amazing number of stories... Its wonderful to see how music can effect us all...

I would have to say for me it is Ordinary Day, Especially last year. I was having such a rough time with everything. My depression was returning, don't know why... But everyday I would listen to that song on my way to work and everything would be okay. I am no longer taking any medication to aid in my depression... I am sleeping well, I continue to listen to Ordinary Day once per day.

    Re: Songs by GBS

I try to listen to "Let It Go" on a regular basis--really listen, not just background music. I'm a bit of a control freak/chronic worrier, and I need that reminder about three times a day, minimum!

"Fisherman's Lament" and "Graceful and Charming" both make me cry every time I hear them, although for different reasons. Funny how a song like "Fisherman's Lament" can mean so much to a landlocked farm girl, but the circumstances of government/corporate interests overtaking the livelihoods of individuals are so similar to what I see happening where I grew up. There's a whole rant there, but not for here! "Graceful and Charming" just makes me cry 'cause I'm a hopeless romantic.

On a more upbeat note, "Yarmouth Town", "Concerning Charlie Horse", and "Jolly Butcher" make me giggle uncontrollably, while "Feel It Turn", "Wave Over Wave" and "When I'm Up" just make me HAPPY!

    Re: Songs by GBS

I was out shopping about two years ago, and I got a call on my cellphone telling me that my cousin Jeff had just had a massive heart attack and died. He was only 36. He had only been home from Alberta the week before. Krista, you probably knew him, he was from Swift Current. Anyway, I had to call my husband to come get me because I was to upset to drive home. About halfway home, he turned on the CD player and Something Beautiful was the song that came on. I can't even find the words to describe what that song did for me that day. For that brief few minutes, it took me away from my grief. Everytime I hear it now it reminds me of Jeff and it makes me smile.
