Hipster, That song makes me love Sean....I love him already for his many gifts, but that song, would be reason enough just by itself. It just shows once again what an amazing man he is. Smile

For sure Andi, I find myself listening to it over and over these days, instead of watching the news. Wish that song could be broadcast load all over the middle east!!!! Maybe somebody would stand up and take notice!!! Maybe we should request to our local Radio stations. Now THAT would be sweet!

Hey Helen, maybe someone could put a bug in Sean's ear for the Western Fair concert in September. There are so many of us OKP'ers going. We would love to hear that song!!!!

    Re: Songs by GBS

Two songs that have gotten me through...really hard times both come off the Something Beautiful* CD...one is Let it Go, and the other is Love.

I took a world issues class this year, and as I was writing and essay one time I was listening to Love and I found a lot of the lyrics had been either questions we asked ourselves in the class or things that were brought up in discussion. Like the...second and last verse of the song just really made me think, and I could relate it to the class I was in. I actually sang and performed it solo for my world issues class for a seminar.

Let it go was simply...a song that really jsut made me relax when absolutely everything was going wrong. I would just put that song and say like "yes...let it go, its not that bad...it could be worse." But yeah those are two GBS songs that I really cherish and that can really get me through a bad day. Thank you Alan and Sean Smile

    Re: Songs by GBS

You guys all have incredible stories; I love it how GBS has touched your hearts in some way.

For me, I have my own few stories to tell as to how GBS has opened me up and either made me become emotional or relaxed:

Feel It Turn -> Whenever I'm having a bad day, I put this song on. Just hearing a song about how having a bad day always turns out to be good next makes me optimistic. Actually, I cried listening to this yesterday; stress was killing me.

Captain Wedderburn -> This song is incredibly peaceful, and helps calm me down. On top of that, it reminds me of some of the relationships I've had...most very positive.

Widow In The Window -> Possibly my favourite GBS song. This is the one that almost always brings me to tears; it's packed with emotions, and to me, has an even deeper meaning. I take it and relate it to me trying to discover myself. Being a teenager, I'm doing this all the time, and it's nice to have a song to relate those confused feelings to. Not to mention the poetic writing, Sean's gorgeous singing voice, and the total ambience of this song make it an incredible piece of art.

How Did We Get From Saying I Love You... -> This one brings back memories of a 'relationship' I had with one of my best friends. In the end, he ended up betraying my trust, and now our friendship is nowhere near where it was before. Alan's approach to lyrics in this song not only brings back memories of the fun we had together as friends and in our relationship, but it makes me feel as if I know I deserve better and that I have to look on the brightside of that situation.

That was long, but I thought I'd share my stories :]

    Re: Songs by GBS

Something Beautiful- my grandma died on dec. 30th at 86 of breast cancer. First of all, all GBS's music helped me so much. It always puts me in a good mood. It was hard to be okay through that but their music kept me up a little more than i would have been without it. But especially something beautiful because the lyrics helped me believe that there's something better out there and she's happy again, and that shes with my grandpa who died a year and a half ago. I am not religious in any way, and im not sure about a lot of stuff having to do with it, but it just made me think more positively about it.

Tickle Cove Pond  darn horses falling through ice...i dunno why but it makes me sad, especially the line about her turning around with a tear in her eye as if to say you're risking our lives...i dunno, my bf thinks im a dork, but still...its just depressing.

Let It Go  when im mad about something stupid, it makes me think...get over it!

Mari-Mac for whatever reason, this song makes me act like im drunk....i just start jumping around and singing lol

like i said, all their music puts me in a good mood.

    Re: Songs by GBS

Thanks for bumping this Andi! So many amazing stories, I fall more in love with the b'ys every day.  The Something Beautiful* album came on just when I started reading this and it has just replaced FF as my fave album.

Let It Go: I sing the chorus of this song like a prayer, at least once a week.It does wonders.

Ordinary Day: My first ever GBS song! I remember biking to class one day and impressing myself that I had memorized it without trying. Alan wrote a folk pop song 12 years ago and it's still their best!

Boston and St. John's:  I sing this to my long distance boyfriend every night over the phone to put him to sleep. It's our song.

How Did We Get From Saying I Love You: Heard this song for the first time after a really hard break up that nearly involved a restraining order. It was the one thing that made me cry after the stress of that whole ordeal where I somehow kept it together. It still makes me sniffle.

Belong: It's a song about loving where you're from and it speaks so many volumes to me having never felt I belonged anywhere until recently. And Alan's voice is like a freight train in the delivery of it. Whenever I hear it i just have to stop and listen and sing.

Time Brings: It is my lullaby that I sing to the kids I work with at rest time, and to put myself to sleep. It's so beautiful!

Sorry this was so long, I'm sure there will be more later.

    Peace, Love, and GBS,

     Loula

    Re: Songs by GBS

"Walk on the Moon" has become my theme song.  I was an avid runner training for my second marathon when I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis five years ago.  My symptoms forced me to quit running for nearly 3 years, and I missed it desperately.  One day I just got fed up and decided that I would run again, no matter how difficult MS made it.  Little by little, I regained my strength and stamina, and I've since run 4 half-marathons, with another one on my schedule in December.  The lyrics "I'm sick and tired of waiting for dreams that never come, and games I never played in but still wish that I had won" resonate with me every time I hear them.

    Re: Songs by GBS

This is a wonderful thread. It reminds me of everything that I love about Great Big Sea and music in general. The way it connects to you and can bring you to a completely different place or state of mind.

Just the other day, Fast as I Can came up on my shuffle while I was cleaning, and I just stopped everything to listen to it. My boyfriend recently told me that he loves me, and it jolted me a bit. Fast as I Can just puts everything that I'd been thinking into words so perfectly and simply. The lyrics are exactly the way I feel right now.

    Re: Songs by GBS

"it's no bigger than a pebble lying on a gravel road" - I'm finding that an especially useful line right now as I seem to keep skinning my knees on the gravel.  No serious injuries, but instead of getting mad at the latest stone, I try to remember that the whole path is gravel and I just need to put one foot in front of the other.

I have no favourite song, although there are some I listen to more often than others.  The variety offered works for whatever mood or moment...

Loula, I don't even need to repost the songs I like, because you listed some of my absolute favourites.

I also like Lucky Me, Oh Yeah, Straight to Hell...there are too many songs to list!
