GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 5:31 PM EDT
Thursday at the Square lineup announced
Business
First of Buffalo - by James Fink Business First
In what is considered it's most
diverse lineup yet, Buffalo Place Inc. has crafted a "Thursday
at the Square" schedule that brings in a mix of cutting-edge and more
conventional acts.
Among the acts booked include Jakob
Dylan, son of famed singer Bob Dylan; Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead and
popular Canadian celtic rockers Great Big Sea.
The 15-week concert series begins on
May 29 and runs through Sept. 4. Making a return after a one-year hiatus is the
two-day "Buffalo Place Rocks the Harbor" shows, which will be held on
the city's waterfront, but with a twist: There will be $10 surcharge in advance
and a $15 charge the day of the show. Tickets are available, beginning May 31
through Ticketmaster outlets.
The Lafayette Square shows remain
free of charge.
M&T Bank is returning as the series
presenting sponsor.
The "Thursday at the
Square" concerts will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown's Lafayette
Square and are considered a major economic engine for bars and restaurants in
the central business district. The concerts have a projected $4.5 million
impact from music lovers, most of whom travel to Lafayette Square from the
suburbs or other locations.
Buffalo Place officials said for
every dollar they invest in the series, $6.38 is returned back into the
community.

Thanks for posting this! I was going to try and go to Wolf Trap, but this show would be a lot easier...

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
I'll be there and can not wait!!!!
I'm recruiting the masses from a hockey forum that I belong to as several out of towners will be coming home (to Buffalo) for a visit. We've decided to make this event our meet-n-greet. Rock the Harbor is a great venue although GBS could play on my front lawn and I'd be just as excited
I seriously need an excursion around the bay

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
We're going to be there as we'll be on our way through towards Akron for the next night anyways... can you recommend a hotel close to where they'll be playing? (within walking distance preferably)

BZJenny: I think the closest hotel is the Adams Mark. If you go to this site, and click on directions, you can zoom in on the marker to get a better idea as to where the venue is. http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/000040BC9324494A?camefrom=AFF_ARTISTDIRECT&brand=tm P.S. as long as I get my token and can book my cruise, it looks like you and I will meet up twice! I'll let you know!

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
It's closest to the Adam's Mark, yes. I would not walk it at night though and I'm a native. That neighbourhood is not the best - not the worst, either, but not someplace I'd feel remotely safe walking in after a concert, even in a group. Take a cell, get a cab, take a bus if you can find one near there ( Email me at summersnowflake.exchage@gmail.com) and I'll help track one down - they may even run a few special routes for that event, Meet up with some OKP'ers and drive to the hotel, but please don't chance walking there. PS: It's the old Aud Mrtro Rail Stop...you should be able to pick that up after the show, but please don't wander around in that area at night.

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
^^Excellent advice Andi^^ Hopefully Jenny, I'll assume you have a car since you're coming from Toronto on your way to Akron! Take your car. It's a 5-10 drive from the Adams Mark with traffic and you wouldn't want to walk it. Should you have transportation, you could probably save a bit on your hotel if you venture a bit further down Delaware Avenue and stay at any of the hotels there (14202 is the zip code I think). Worse case, we'll talk before then I'm sure (and as more gather here) and I'll give you my cell number if need be. We'll figure out a way to keep you safe. Like Andi said, it's not the worst of neighborhoods, just in a *pocket* of sorts (from the Harbor to Adams Mark) that you don't want to mess with, get lost in, or be in the dark in, etc.. If you're here early enough that Friday, make sure you get the original chicken wings at The Anchor Bar or make reservations at "Chef's" (you won't regret it)!

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
If you have a car, you can stay outside the city limits, too. The city is not all that large, and there are some decent priced/ decent places to stay not far from the thruway ( try exit 49, it's about 20 minutes from downtown and has several places near by) and save quite a bit. It you have AAA/CAA have them make the reservations for you and you can save some more. There's all sorts of places to eat in and around Buffalo, if you need suggestions, the Anchor Bar is a good bet for wings and there's probably a couple dozen mom and pop places in the downtown area, too. Plano's is good, The Falafel Hut is good, if you want more upscale places try Sea Bar for Sushi, Oliver's for fine dining, The Muse ( in the Art Gallery) for something lighter, or take a drive and go up the Elmwood Strip and explore what you find, there's something here for everyone. ( ANd between Kath and I - we'll make sure you have all the info you need. :) )

I will be driving down with a friend from here... then meeting up w/ 3 more once we're down. We will probably do the cab thing. Looking forward to meeting everyone... both here and for those that can make the cruise. Can't wait!

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
Depends on what you consider appropriate. Count on large crowds, who will start arriving way early to get front row - some have arrived as early as 10 am for the Thursday shows. There will likely be drinking and partying - and "adult" behaviour. ( notice the quotes) Kids go, and many have a good time by an large they are not cut any quarter by the crowd - some folks are not willing, others not able and still others too drunk to notice that a kid is there. Last time GBS was at Thursday in the Square the crowd was upwards of 20,000. I guarantee there will be kids there, but I can equally guarantee that there will be about every other type of person there too. So you may want to consider the idea that he'll see somethings you'd rather he didn't - and that the folks doing them won't care who sees or who they offend. Andi ~ who got an eyeful at her last Thursday in the Square experience. :P

If we're able to make it down for the show, my daughter, who will be just turning 6, will be there with us if you're looking for moral support :)

Re: GBS concert in Buffalo, NY
Yes, it's for real. This is part of a series that always starts at that time. It's designed to help keep Suburbanites in the Downtown area for one night a week.
