Great Big Sea concert lineup adds more Newfoundland flavour

As the lineup for the Great Big Sea-headlined concert in Gander this summer grows from a one-course meal to five courses, the show also adds a few more helpings of Newfoundland musical talent.
Now scheduled to take part in the event is one scoop of Rex Goudie, the unknown Newfoundland performer who shot to instant stardom through the Canadian Idol television show in 2005; a plateful of the Novaks, with Wesleyville natives Mick Davis and Chuck Tucker; and extra helpings of Aislin House and St. John's band Hey Rosetta!
"This is going to make for a real good concert with a Newfoundland flavour," said one of the concert's co-ordinator's, Derm Flynn. "It's all fabulous Newfoundland and Labrador talent, who have ... well established themselves.
"Rex Goudie was a sellout when he was in Gander. We've got Hey Rosetta!, which has been called one of the top up and coming bands in Canada. We've added Aislin House, and they are the five Palmer Sisters. They've been around for a number of years, playing since they were wee kids."
And while the lineup continues to grow, Mr. Flynn said concert organizers are still keeping the door open to one more act to perform that day, and two bands have been confirmed to rock the Gander Community Centre the night before the concert in the park, too.
Beatles cover band Abby Road, who played the Kitchen Party last summer, and Blue-Eyed Blonde will take the stage in 2008.
Both bands, according to Mr. Flynn, are back by popular demand.
"Both have been very well received in Gander," he said. "Blue-Eyed Blonde played two years ago, and we've had a lot of requests for both groups to come back, from people who were there the last time around, so we booked them for the Friday night gig."
Meanwhile, Mr. Flynn added organizers are working on establishing more sites for camping and travel campers since it's believed other campsites near Gander and hotels are expected to fill quickly.
"Obviously, we would encourage (the campsites and hotels) to fill up first, and then we would try to do some overflow-type situation for travel trailers," he said. "We're pretty sure the hotels will fill up quickly once people start making their reservations."
The all-ages show is scheduled for Aug. 2, and will take place at an outdoor concert at Cobb's Pond Rotary Park as a part of the town's 50th anniversary celebrations during its annual Festival of Flight.
