Re: Shamrockfest @ RFK/D.C.
Thanks for the setlist -- I was too smushed in the crowd to make my usual notes into my cell phone. Sometimes I can't believe how many songs they do because by the time they're done it seems like no time's transpired AT ALL.

MuppetCoat: It's not CL Fans - it's drunk people at an outdoor festival full of beer. But thanks... Honestly, If you weren't expecting that sort of crowd, I have to wonder if you've ever been to a festival like that ever before. No one said you have to be in the thick of things, my friends' kids watched from the back/side and had a great time.
For me, it's because I'm an idiot. Of course, the only other Irish festivals I had ever been too were the ones you and I went to in Bethlehem (Celtic festival? whatever it was called), so I wasn't expecting moshers and crowd surfers! I also sort of expected those people to clear out before CL and GBS, but I guess since there weren't any other acts going on at the time they had nothing better to do, and since the beer was still flowing they all stuck around.

Re: Shamrockfest @ RFK/D.C.
The whole scenario with the festival grounds, free beer and so many people is what made me decide not to go. I was not doing too well the last time I went to DC and some overboard Canadian fans decided to push their way through us in spite of our front row spots. I felt like I was going to fall and would have been trampled I'm sure. They didn't even take any heed of the guy in front who was on crutches. I made myself a promise then not to go to any GA shows in DC as that was the second time it happened. Glad I kept the promise! Would have been nice to see Carbon Leaf again, though. Their fans were fine the times I've seen them. Maybe it was the free beer. Anne

Re: Shamrockfest @ RFK/D.C.
annaonthemoon79, Really? Have you never been to a largely-free (I hardly call $15 "admission") to an all-day rock concert, outdoors, on stadium PARKING LOT? Or do you not get the gist of what happens at these things? See, me? I was only in it for the GBS. So I purposely did not ARRIVE at the fairgrounds until 6ish because I expressly had no interest in being around uber-young, drunken, stumbling a-holes all day. I was pretty pleased with my GBS experience (I always am, so I guess that's sort of a moot point). The Mari Mac was the best I had ever heard, I was able to get security to remove the drunken borderline-molester from the front row, I found someone's lost cell phone on the ground and ultimately ... I got the same euphoric "GBS high" that I get from being at any of their shows. And, I got Bob's pick which really put a nice cap on the night ;)

MuppetCoat: TinaCap:That's too bad, Golden Ager. I can skip seeing CL at Irish 2000 if I have to brave being kicked in the head by a dumb ass or coerced to make way by overly aggressive and manipulative fans pushing to the front in the 11th hour. I don't need to stare full frontal at CL to enjoy their music. If what Muppet Coat says above is true and CL fans are typically dumb asses at Irish Festivals, and it's *shrug* no big deal to them, I'm happy to skip their act. I hate crowds like that. Idiots.

Muppetcoat - You're welcome. Oh btw, I was responding to Golden Ager, who is not a kid/child/young un/wee one/kidlet/whathaveyou, she's a golden ager. GBS has always stood by the idea that their shows are for all ages, to be enjoyed by all ages. Most of us attend their shows with that ideal in mind. Of course parents are the ones who have to decide if a venue is appropriate for their children or not? We all know that. GBS fans have successfully taken their kids to many festival venues in years past. In the same way that parents must choose where to take their kids, people who make the choice to body surf and kick people in the head will have to deal with the fact that many people of all sizes and ages will choose not to support them up there. I wasn't at Shamfest.

Re: Shamrockfest @ RFK/D.C.
For me, GA is always somewhat of a nightmare. I really love the comfort that comes with a seat with my name on it! ;)
I only went to this one because it was a "we are a bunch of folks who are gonna have a blast going together" sort of affair. I was mentally prepared for the "GA experience" which is why I don't think I left being the least bit cranky. If it's any consolation, it was a great show but it's not like you missed "the show of a lifetime."

Sorry. My mistake. FWIW, I haven't crowdsurfed in years, and wouldn't have crowdsurfed at for bands like CL/GBS even when I was a kid, but I guess I just had a different expectation than y'all for this type of show/venue.

Re: Shamrockfest @ RFK/D.C.
I managed to (mostly) avoid any obnoxious drunks. We were standing maybe 12 rows back or a bit further. Had a good view of Alan and Sean most of the time. I had the best time. They were so awesome. This was only my second GBS show. I didn't think they could be any better than they were last time, but I think they were. They really seemed to be having a lot of fun themselves, too. They were just fantastic. Listening to them is just such an experience of pure joy. I was with four friends who had never seen GBS, and I think they all came away converts. I can't wait for June and then for Wolf Trap in August!!

No worries MC. I didn't have any expectations because I didn't buy tickets or look into going to see what kind of venue it was. I think it's a shame that older fans, fans with children, and gentler souls of all ages feel they have to bow out to avoid having a really awful time, that's all. Then again, I'm admittedly and stubbornly too idealistic.

You could look at it that way. Or you could look at it another way and say that GBS has various kinds of audiences and some of them mix very well together and others, not so much. There are plenty of the drunken-a-hole crowd that wouldn't be caught dead at some of the tamer GBS venues I've been to (smaller concert halls) and it's not "a shame" that they can't go, it's just that it doesn't hold any appeal. I think holding onto the idea that all GBS shows will be the same regardless of venue is a bit over-idealistic. One of my first GBS "shows" was seeing them in a local record store with about 40 other people. Will anything every match that? Probably not. But that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate each GBS show for what it has to offer me, you know? And when I have kids -- I will not be exposing them to this sort of venue. I will take them to the nicer venues with the lawn seating and the mostly middle-age/more mature sort of audience that I prefer and think of as better with kids. Yeah, GBS totally welcomes all kids to shows and they themselves run a pretty kid-friendly show (in terms of lyrics, stage banter, costuming, etc.) but they can't control who comes to the shows and how they behave and they *certainly* can't control the madness that is the pushing/shoving that is part and parcel of a GA show.

(sorry about the Newfoundland flag waiver near the end - he wouldn't put the flag down) A totally acceptable GBS footage obstruction! :)

Yes. I get you. I've been to every kind of GBS show imaginable over the past 10 years like many others. Some are fun, some so-so, some unspeakably exciting. Bottom line is, I still and always hate seeing the physically weaker among us get trampled. It pisses me off at the very core of my being. I'm overly idealistic that way, as I said, as you repeated. Never said anything about expecting GBS to control the fans--LOL!--although, wow, THAT would make a delicious fly-on-the-wall tour bus conversation, non?! And look at that, here's me still preferring one type of show experience over another, one type of energy over another. As you say, how I look at this is my choice. :)
