Re: Ships and Dip cruise - just amazing !

Hey Frosty... was trying to get some sort of feel when I was speaking w/ Bob after the Oysterband show on Sunday night... he was still saying it's up in the air... 60% chance was his indication.

I'm wondering if it's partly to do with the busy tour they'll have lined up in the summer/fall... and his feedback on the cruise was that their schedule was really regimented.

But hopefully they'll make a decision in favour... I'm going anyways (since we go to spend time w/ friends of ours), but sure would be a great perk to have them on board again... they were the highlight of the cruise last year!

    Hi Jenny, Big Smile

What did he say exactly ? , did they find the cruise wasn't their thing you mean ?

The guys did seem to have a good time, I think Alan had the most fun, he was always out on deck somewhere, and was having a blast from what I saw.  I thought by the end of the cruise that Sean may have gotten used to it, ( he did say it was his first time on a cruise, and he seemed a bit apprehensive from his comments on one of the shows ) but I thought maybe that wore off by the end of the cruise, but maybe he feels better on land.

Bob said he didn't like doing outdoor shows, because it plays havoc on his instruments, and we saw that on their outdoor concerts.  I could see he wasn't happy with the wind, and his instrument not working on one of the songs.

Well, all we can do is hope.  I don't know, if they don't go, I don't know if I want to spend the $4,000 + to go, when you figure in the cost of the cruise, the plane fare, the hotel before and after the cruise, it all adds up, and very fast... oh and the $800 of booze on the ship,  it's a boatload of money, and we haven't even paid off this cruise yet.   I have always said, that this could have been a once-in-a-lifetime event.... imagine seeing Great Big Sea that close up, being able to mingle with them, have a drink with them, as we did,  ( gee I even a sip of Sean's Mojito ! ) , if it happens again, I'll be very very happy.  Sometimes the stars align , and it comes together... let's keep our fingers, and toes crossed ! shades

I've posted a few more videos from the cruise, if you are interested you may view them,

Here's Alan enjoying a concert by Sarah Harmer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4T_O79akH4

And here is a video of Great Big Sea waiting to go on stage, and coming up on stage on
stage to perform a concert out on the Lido deck:

I also posted more videos of me walking around deck with my camcorder, one of Sarah Harmer ( a snippit of one of her songs ) and others.  Some are interesting, some maybe not so much.

    Enjoy nerd

Bob said he loved the gig part but wasn't really into the cruise part. Not his idea of a vacation (cruises aren't exactly my thing either).

It seemed from his comments (and remember this was him talking... not necessarily reflective of all the b'ys)... that they enjoyed the interaction and atmosphere on the cruise... but he did mention the playing outdoors thing... and he brought up the word "regimented" a couple of times... so while it was relaxing for the rest of us, not sure how it was for the band members.

But he wasn't saying they wouldn't do it again... his words were 60% chance we'll do it... but haven't made the decision yet...

I agree with you though Frosty... was quite an experience.... and all the sweeter for havin the boys there.

Re: Ships and Dip cruise - just amazing !

Well if any of you want to join us on the Rock Boat- please DO!!!

It is a grand time.  It truly is an experience that you will never forget.  Just like the ships and dip.  You are exposed to so many great musicans- it truly is the best experience/vacation i have ever had.

And hey we have Carbon Leaf and Gaelic Storm again this year!! There are SO many great performers that you would not be disapointed.  I would love to experience GBS on the boat as well, but you know, i am so fullfilled by the new music- that if they don't make it~ i will be ok. I would love to have them, but it still ends up being a great trip.  I couldn't make SND last year because i was already on TRB, and to add to my sadness- i met with Andy from sixthman and he offered me a cabin while i was on the RB and i couldn't make it!!! it was my dream boat- GBS, CL, and GS.  But hey- 1 week away from the family was too much already.

Thank you to all of you for sharing your experiences on the ships n dip.  it sounded like you all had a grand time.  I knew that GBS would fit right in- and they truly got what it meant by being on the ship.  Playing with their friend musicans, mingling with their fans, hanging around, just like how Sixthman wants their musicans to be- part of the group, party, and being part of the experience, creating the experience - maybe sometime they will join the RB too.  Or maybe some year i can take two weeks away from the family!!  Sounds funny, i know, but to be on the RB you have to GET IT.  It is an experience that you can't really explain.   As Scott from Wideawake has described;    "Those who haven't been on it, can't understand it, those who have been on it; can't explain it."

Well if any of you choose to join the RB- please let me know- would love to meet up with you.

    Cheers

    Have a great weekend

I'm a latecomer to this thread, but just have to post that we too had a most amazing time on Ships and Dip III, mostly because of GBS.  We can't begin to thank the lads enough for being aboard and giving us a glimpse of what they are like offstage, which as best as I can tell is warm, gracious and funny as heck.  If they are back on V, we'll be there, no questions asked!

Funny about Bob's comments.  I was right near Bob during their Lido deck show (sorry, I still haven't posted my videos yet) and the only time he seemed a bit flustered was when he had to re-string his fiddle between songs.  Not really an outdoor issue I wouldn't think.  Anyway, the other comment regarding his repeated phrase about "regimented" caught my ear.  I was talking to Alan in the deli line the afternoon after their first show in the Carribbean Lounge and asked him if he was enjoying himself so far and if he (they) would do it again.  He said it was great, he just wished they could play more and with other people.  He said it was a little too - think he used the word "regimented" or structured.  In other words I think he (and probably the rest of the boys) wanted more of the Great Big Gaelic Leaf type of jam thing the rest of the time.  Otherwise, I think they had a great time judging by how visible they all were during their spare time on the cruise.

Ah...okay. Thanks for sharing that because that makes total sense now. It's crazy how we were all wishing that exact same thing all week long! Maybe someone gave that feedback to Sixthman and BNL afterwards ... I hope so.

Well, I've made the decision that unless I win the lottery, I'm not doing S&DV.  Because I'll be spending a MONTH in the UK in October instead :D
