Re: Ships and Dip cruise - just amazing !

I think I was next to you at the final GBS show Frosty.

It was an amazing time. It's hard to explain it to all the people that have been asking me aobut it - it was so great I'm speechless.

It was great talking to the guys - it took me about 3 days before I saw Bob walking around - he just blended in with the crowd, and his wife is a swetheart.  Didn't really talk to Bob or Murray much, but had a great chat with Chris, and many chats with Alan and Sean. I have a great photo that Alan took of himself with my camera. My new favorite photo.

Today was -22 when I left for work. Apperntly I missed the nasy stuff. Last monday as we were all getting naked for the photo, and then waving to Cuba as we sailed by it was -50 celsius with the wind chill. Picked the right time to be away.

I will eventually get my photos uploaded.  I'm still trying to recover from the hour of sleep I got on Friday morning.

    Hi Diana !

On the final show, I was just right of the stage, the second level up, about where Bob was singing,
I didn't see you, but there were so many people I would have missed you and your beautiful camera.

Your great photos make mine look terrible.  Argh, I knew I should have brought my Canon 20D, but I just didn't know how large the safe would be, and have never been on a cruise, and thought it would be too cumbersome to walk around with, and so just brought 2 smaller point and shoot cams, including my TX1. Ah gee.  My photos pale against yours.

I noticed I'm in your pre-photo party album, but it was a gentleman who was the official Sixthman photographer, that shot me and my wife, so I'm guessing you work with Sixthman eh ?

Anyway, beautiful work, - really.  You took some lovely photos, and did the B/W effect on the right
    ones too !

Very nice Diana ! Big Smile

    Hey Frosty --

I think Diana2 is right. Weren't you the ones also staking out a spot stage Bob, a couple levels up, several hours in advance, just because?

I'm having no luck attaching the photo of us to this message, so here's the raw album of photos from show 3: http://picasaweb.google.com/barb.bergman/SDGBS3?authkey=RTYlqZIDIP8

p.s. the willbyinton photos are the professional ones.

    hi everybody-

this was my second year on the Rock Boat and I know what you are talking about.  Unfortunately I didn't get to go on Ships n Dip-could only take one week and I had already paid for the Rock Boat- so great to hear all of your stories.  I knew it would be a blast and I am so happy to hear that it sounds like the GBS boys had an absolute great time.

Scott Leger from Wideawake described the Rock Boat this way and i think it probably fits for how you are all feeling about Ships n Dip:

"Those that have been can't describe it and those that haven't been can't understand it"

So if the stars are in line for next year and my absolute favorite bands (GBS, CL, & GS) are on board Ships n dip again- I will be joining you fine people.

The killer about ships n dip for me- when i was talking to Andy(the big man from sixthman) on the Rock Boat one night- I told him how ships n dip was my dream boat but i could only manage the one week- he offered me a free cabin!!  Oh my lordy- I had the hardest time saying i couldn't go because i needed to get back to the family.  So when i got home my husband said " oh sweetie you could have stayed- we would have worked it out"   NNNNNNNOOOOOOOO- good thing there were no sharp or loaded objects near me.

Just wasn't meant to be- but so glad you all had an awesome trip- can't really call it the trip of a life time because you will be going again next year and it will be even better.Big Smile

So glad GBS said yes and they joined the boat-crossing my fingers for next year.

    Slainte,

    Shawnie

    Hi there barbekresla ! Smile

That was us ! - for the last show, we decided to sit, and sit, and sit, and then sit again, for about 3 hours just go get a spot closer to the boys ! - well worth the wait !

And now that I check your album, I realize one of these lovely ladies asked me to snap this very image !

    http://picasaweb.google.com/barb.bergman/SDGBS3/photo?authkey=RTYlqZIDIP8#5163345989004861410

It really IS a small world eh !  .... Nice meeting you all by the way ! Big Smile

Ah ok !, I thought the image albums that Diana posted were her own, I guess I read that wrong, phew !, ok so those were all done by a professional, thank goodness, that makes me feel a bit better with my amateur snapshots ! LOL.

I'm still in withdrawl, again, I was dreaming last night I was on the boat ! , I wonder when I'll get my brain back into non-vacation mode hehe.

Re: Ships and Dip cruise - just amazing !

Here are a couple of vids of Great Big Sea performing on the Ships And Dip III 2008 cruise

    Video1: http://www.gbsarmy.com/gbs/video1/
Great Big Sea's first concert (inside auditorium) , short snippit of them playing.  And yes,
that's Sean saying he's wearing his "green thong " , - the theme for the BareNaked Ladies cruise
was "green" so there were dozens and dozens of people wearing anything green !

    Video2: http://www.gbsarmy.com/gbs/video2/
Great Big Sea's 2nd concert.  Outside on the Lido deck ( deck 9 ), here they are singing
what seems to becoming one of their new favourite songs: ( Land Down Under ) , they sang this
twice while on the Ships And Dip III cruise in the Caribbean.

    Video2a: http://www.gbsarmy.com/gbs/video2a/
Short, larger snippit of Bob playing his whistle solo.  Great stuff Bob ! Yes

Please let the video load, it may take a few seconds to load, depending on your connection, when enough has loaded, it will start playing automatically.

    Hi barbekresla,

Nice meeting you, which lady were you ? hmm.  Anyway sorry about the quality of the videos, they are short clips, and very low in quality.  However, for the Internet, there's not much to do but drop the quality down to internet standards, which doesn't looks great.  I'm going to post some more in the coming week, and also I'll post some on my YouTube site.

Hope you enjoy what I can upload though.  It's just nice to see the boys !

Here's looking forward to Ships And Dip 5 ( officially announced by Ed of BNL on the last night of the cruise at their concert ) ( time to start saving those dollars ! - eeks ! )

Hey Frosty-- I'm the one with short dark hair, sporting my GBS "tattoo." The gal with curly is Diana2, from Edmonton. The redhead is my travelbuddy Mary -- she was just along for the cruise. ~Barb

    Hey Frosty!

Thanks for the "down under" one ... I just love it! Atmosphere out on the deck looks really great! This song used to be one of my very favourites in the 80th ... cool to hear (and see!) it again that way!

Is that something they just play once in a while on concerts anyway or might it be a song that we can expect for a cover song on the next album? Hm - I kinda like that idea!

    Keep posting! Yes

    Cheers ... Christina

Re: Ships and Dip cruise - just amazing !

Hi bouzouki, no problem ! Big Smile , well they sang that song, not once, but twice, telling me that they like it, and it really seems from the audience that "we" loved it also.  Sean looked like he really enjoys singing that song.  I had to go and check out the original video the other day, ( anyone who is too young to know that song, just look for the group "Men At Work" )

Here's another video, of Great Big Sea singing " Summer Nights" ( from Grease )
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCOvQvzMEdY

Below is a great picture.... Sean and Bob sipping a cold beer, I think they deserved it, they worked really hard at entertaining us ! Stick out tongue

By the way, Bob does a great job at the whistle solo... I was really loving that !, <br>

    - it's really too bad the videos reflect how loud the concerts were, nor how good they sounded... you just can't get a good sound unless it's professionally recorded ( we, the audience record basically from the towering speaker systems, whereas when professionally, the sound is recorded only from the instrument microphones )  Oh well, that's life :-)  I would have loved them to record their shows on the cruise for a new DVD - now THAT would have been awesome !  "New Great Big Sea concert ! - Cruising In The Caribbean " however, it was officially The BareNaked Ladies cruise, so if any professional recording would have been done, it would have been for them.   ( I really never knew just how popular our BareNaked Ladies was down south until I saw the screaming fans on board ) ,, on a side note, there were so so many that had no clue who GBS was ! ... and that was good for us ! ... better seats !! Yes

Re: Ships and Dip cruise - just amazing !

Frosty ... now you scare me: you can look right into my brain apparently ... what

I had the same idea of a recording for a DVD from the cruise. If it didn't happen now, I'll keep hoping for S&D part V - that I'm definately not gonna miss, especially if the boys are invited on board again (I might also go for Carbon Leaf, hm we'll see - anyway I already started to save for the budget) ! But after GBS were obviously so well received by the audience this time, in the future it might get harder to get up front in the crowd ...

Oh yes, the "Summer nights" - I guess I was something like ten or twelve when I saw the original movie. And I loved it. I remember I was trying to dress up like Olivia Newton John ... but if I could vote for a cover on the next album, I'd go for good old Men At Work ...

Great shot again, the sip-pic ... wonderful light, and I really like Seans very special sunglasses ...

I'll stay tuned for more to come!

    Cheers ... Christina
