Great Big Christmas, St. John's Delta Hotel

It was just Great. I enjoyed it so much and it appeared that everybody had a super time.

Thank you so much for the great performance. I hope to see GBS back at the same place Christmas 2008.

I can't believe everyone's been so quiet here about how the show was! I'm dying for details!

I was just thinking the same thing, Fran! Maybe they are too busy shoveling all the snow they got. Priorities, y'know.

The show was fantastic!!!!  What more can I say.  These guys can certainly entertain and did not disappoint last night.  They are so full of energy. The audience participation was out of this world.  From the moment they stepped on stage to when they left after the encores, everybody was hyped.   I think they have a thing for jinxing the weather.  The last time I saw them at the Arts & Culture Center, there was a big snowstorm and of course, another storm last night.  My husband drove our daughter & me to the show (we're not from the city) just so we could enjoy this excellent band as well as contribute to the cause (Daffodil Place).  Can't wait for the new CD.  Hope to see you again next year.  Anyways, keep up the good work Great Big Sea.   The Best Ambassadors for our province.

Re: Great Big Christmas, St. John's Delta Hotel

Ok, I try to give some more details, knowing men enjoy and don’t write (speak) so much. :-) The snow storm just calmed down around 07:00 pm and we could make it to the Delta Hotel. At 09:15 the Novaks from Halifax started their performance, and I like all the songs the played. After the Novaks the Ballroom filled with people but it was not as busy as last year’s concert. You had lots of space even close to the stage. GBS played many old songs unfortunately no song from their album “The Hard and the Easy”. I liked Mari Mac and Lukey the most. Two or three songs came from their new album which will be published soon. The atmosphere was just unbelievable everybody was in such a good mood and the participation from the audience was super. You could tell that they have a very big supporting community here in the St. John’s area. I hope that next year everybody can make it to the Delta, and that we will have weather like today, the 29th of December, a sunny day with lots of blue sky and almost no wind. See you all very soon. Alan announced half way through the evening, that $50,000.00 from this concert will be donated to the Daffodil Place in St. John’s.

Re: Great Big Christmas, St. John's Delta Hotel

    I snagged a set list!

    7 Joys
    Tonight
    Hinks
    When
    Lukey
    Moon
    Paddy
    King
    Penelope
    River Driver
    Scolding
    Rover
    Run
    No Cares
    Helmet
    Con. Free
    Mari
    Ordinary

    Oh Yeah (new)
    Excursion
    Fortune

    Hell
    Black

It was a great show, as always!  All the lads were in fine form last night, even when Alan forgot/fumbled the words to one of the songs (it slips my mind which one at the moment).  And during sound check it would appear that he forgot how to count too - instead of 'seven' he sang 'five'!

I didn't get any pictures because I know there are others who would get plenty.  My goal was to go and enjoy the show.  The set list was just a bonus!

Re: Great Big Christmas, St. John's Delta Hotel

'Tonight' is another new song that we were treated to Big Smile I'm at work at the moment but at home I've got some pics and video that I got from Krista last night. I'll see if any of the videos managed to get either new song and see if I can get some of the lyrics. Or at least a gist of the lyrics...I don't want the b'ys to get angry at me. 'Oh Yeah' has a harder edge to it than anything I've ever heard them perform before. I'm not too sure how to describe it really other than to say that it had a hard rock touch to it, and that I could see it killing Alan's throat if he sang like that all the time! Pass the honey to soothe the sore vocal cords, man!

    Hey Bonnie

Just wanted to say I to was at the show that night and they came through again by making it another huge success as they always do.I got lots of great pics.I seen the list you had of what they sang and there is one correction on that list. They never sang The River Driver.Matter a fact they never done any songs from Courage Patience and Grit. They sang alot of there old songs and some new ones that are comming out on the new cd this year but none from the latest one.

Re: Great Big Christmas, St. John's Delta Hotel

No worries, Geoff.  I just copied exactly what was written on Murray's set list...and completely forgot that they didn't do River Driver.  Meh, I'm far from perfect!  LOL!

If you got pics, please share?  I didn't bring my camera because I knew several others would, and my cam is crap.

Re: Great Big Christmas, St. John's Delta Hotel

This was in today's paper.  My only beef is that they didn't get Alan's name right and it's the St John's paper...oh well...congrats on a job well done!!  That was a fabulous show and you're welcome!  Yes

Great Big gift for Daffodil Place

    The Telegram

Great Big Sea’s Great Big Christmas Concert benefit on Dec. 28 raised $46,481.18 to help with the construction of Daffodil Place in St. John’s.
The members of the popular Newfoundland band topped up the amount to $50,000.
A project of the Canadian Cancer Society, Daffodil Place will offer accommodations and services designed for people undergoing cancer treatment. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring.
“We were so impressed by how much support there is for this project,” said Allan Doyle of Great Big Sea.
On behalf of the band, I would like to thank everyone who attended the show and helped make this a success.”
Doyle is also a member of the Daffodil Place Campaign Cabinet.
Cabinet chairman John Steele said, “(Doyle) is a great ambassador for the project and has worked tirelessly in the public and private sectors to gain support for Daffodil Place.”

Oh, wow, they did 7 Joys live??  Man, that would have been worth the price of admission right there...one of my all-time favorite GBS songs!!!  Lucky you!!!

I just downloaded those two songs and not bad. Tonight is a bit sappy but has some catchy parts, and Oh Yeah kinda rocks out. High energy and fun to sing along to. I think they were both recorded at bowery.
