GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

The boys ROCKED !! This was my first time and I wasn't disappointed, they had so much energy and I got to see them interacting with each other which was hilarious. That gravelly voice song Alan sings is rockin and so is Straight To Hell. Some of the best parts was when Sean started singing a Flaming Lips song and when Alan conducted us in Bohemian Rhapsody.  Actually the best part was making eye contact with them- how cool is that? Great venue. Sorry the Rangers beat the Canadiens last night Alan (we really needed the win). I apologize to whomever's  feet I stomped or body parts I elbowed while dancing. Thanks for the tip on Loreley's Dave. Great food. Great beer. Giants on the tv beating the Cowboys. All in all a fantastic night - this Mommy really needed it!! I'm sweaty, tired and hoarse- it's all good!!

It was an awesome show! All music, both new and old, sounded great.

Wouldn't it be great if the band just never ended? :)

Great show tonight - lots of energy. Pretty old-school GBS except for Charlie Horse and the four new ones we got this evening. Walk on the Moon, Tonight, Straight to Hell, and my least favorite, Oh Yeah. Karen got Walk on the Moon dedicated t her as the lone Cowboys fan in a sea of Giants. It was cute.Met a lot of people and had a great time. Lots of photos and I'll post a review ASAP which will be maybe tomorrow night without the photos.

Wow.  What a show.  Such fun.  So wonderful to see Nova again, and to finally meet GBSeaford, Chiarascura and Annette, and to see Anne in Philly before and after the show.  Here's a couple of my pictures.

Awesome show indeed! I don't remember dancing so much, I guess that old school GBS formula did the trick! They still managed to pull off all the hits and the NEW stuff is Great! Good times. Great encores! Thanks for coming down guys and the snow never followed. Looking forward to the next tour! Thanks again Nova.

Fantastic show! What were the encores, though? Had to scramble the sainted white haired Mum out during Ordinary Day to catch a cab back to Grand Central - we didn't know it was ONLY raining until we got out the door and couldn't get back in! Great show, great to see people, the Giants won, so much I could go on about! Walk on the Moon tears my heart out! Cheers! Kati

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

I'd say it was unanimous.  Everyone thought last night's show was awesome. The crowd was ready to party, the Giants fans were ready to celebrate ( sorry Karen), and the band seemed well rested and ready to play the old and the new. Now I can't wait for the full tour and the new CD release. I just love the second song of the night the new song, "Tonight". Hope we can see them doing it on one of the late night television shows loike Conan or Letterman, though with the title, guess it would be perfect for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

that was the single most amazing show i have ever been to in my life! and they are hysterical. You see, I am a big Hanson fan (yea haha i know lol) and have been for 11 years now.....(i know i saw someone with an isaac avatar around here so i know im not the only one...that makes me feel good lol) I have only seen 3 hanson shows in 11 years, and i never thought id have a better time at another show as i did at my last hanson show in september...and god was i wrong! this show beat that hanson shows butt, a million times more awesome. I dont think anything will ever compare to that GBS show, except mroe GBS shows lol and i was like the second person from the stage, almost in the center, and i've never been that close at any show except ones in tiny tiny clubs like the bitter end, etc.......i never had so much fun, or danced and sang that much, ever. amazing. My first GBS show and I can't wait for the next one already. incredible. i dragged my bf along. He thinks they are good but he's not really a fan, he doesnt listen to them unless he's with me....but even he admitted that it was the best show hes ever been to. that makes me happy cuz hes tough to impress sometimes. Big Smile  anyway, i needed to rave a little. so there........fantastic!

anything worth having is worth some sacrifice....

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

Another stellar NYC show from the boys!!. Great crowd, small intimate venue. I really enjoyed hanging with fellow OKPers BetRx (and husband Dan), Annette, Nova and Chiarascura. We were right up front, stage Sean, dancing the night away. Talked with Captsatch at the bar at intermission and he and his wife were great along with my Nova Scotia buddy Wes. The last two encores were "Straight to Hell" and "Old Black Rum". Just right before "Straight to Hell" a few people near us started chanting "Old Browns Daughter" and Alan said "What? Smoke on the Water?" and quickly played the classic riff from that song. After OBR, Alan kept the rest of the band on the stage to do "Old Browns Daughter" even though it was not on the set list. Great way to end the night......

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

He he he, that "Smoke on the Water" comment was so funny.  There were quite a few funny lines last night, which is remarkable since it was almost non-stop music and little banter.  The Volvo commercial line was great.  I wish I could remember Alan's remark about the amount of snow we would be getting and cats.

I know I am the queen of selfish right now, but I hope the upcoming tour includes another NY date (only after Halifax, of course!)

Great night guys, thanks so much!  (OKPeeps and band alike!  winked)

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

Alan remarked that the amount of snow we get here is equal to the amount they dust off the cat up in Newfounland (paraphrasing). I hope they come back soon too. I can't wiat for the new cd to surface. Waiting patiently, failing miserably.

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

I just went on the tonight show website and suggested they have Great Big Sea on the show.   http://www.nbc.com/The_Tonight_Show_with_Jay_Leno/about/contact.shtml

I figure why not? I don't think the boys have any ties to the writers guild and how great would that be to see them on the tonight show!  New album, witty banter, cute little faces, song made for the show, what the hey!!

Feel free to do the same

Re: GBS at the Bowery Ballroom Tonight

I took zero notes and was too hyped up (on rum, among other things) to remember too many details, but I will say that the show was awesome. (Which is surprising, you know, because GBS shows are usually about as much fun as a charity bingo game :-P) Thanks to Nova, Annette, GBSeaford, BetRx & Dan for making it even more awesome for me, it wouldn't have been half as much fun without good company. (And Anne too - only got to see you briefly, but still better than nuttin' :)

I'll second everyone saying how awesome the venue was - small and cozy. Especially from the front row. Very, very cozy. So cozy it makes you want to spoon on the couch and watch Law & Order . . . errr, but I digress. Yes, it was an awesome venue, and while I'll understand if they don't play there again (pretty small capacity for a GBS show in NYC), I really enjoyed it.

I got a shot of the setlist, and it's here, along with all the other pictures. (Not too many this time.)

A few moments that stuck in my mind -

    - They tailored a line in "Donkey Riding" to NYC! Have they done that before? "Was you ever in New York City, where the girls are oh so pretty." (Fine - and true dat! - but personally, I think next time, they should just change "donkey riding" to "subway riding," but that's just me.)

    - I thought "Sea of No Cares" was especially nicely done last night. I guess it's always good, but I actually stopped jumping around and just listened very quietly.

    - Alan (possibly) committed a felony on Sean. A very fun felony. (Everybody say SQUEE!) But Sean totally asked for it by singing a love song to Alan. (By the way, anyone else notice that they've stopped hitting on Murray? Wonder if he feels lonely amid all this male bonding.)

    - We got a completely spontaneous encore! Old Brown's Daughter, as you will see, is not on the setlist. They just took mercy on us poor little old New Yorkers, and did that gorgeous unplugged a capella version. (Best part about being that close to the stage was, we could VERY clearly hear every part of the harmony.) And the crowd WAS quiet. Nice crowd, by the way. (For the most part; thanks for the assist, GBSeaford :)

    - The new songs. Obviously. For the love of all that is holy, stop playing coy and just put the bloody CD out already. You want it, I want it, let's just get it over with and then we can all be happy. Except for Sharn, who will NEVER be happy until you PLAY HALIFAX.

There, that about covers it. Actually, it doesn't even come close, but that's all I can articulate at the moment, the rest is just squeals of joy. (I, along with the rest of the civilized world, am waiting for Anne's review to come out :)

It's coming, it's coming! I felt sleep was more important yesterday after getting home at 2 AM and having to go to work. Between Karen and I, we took about 300 photos, but they won't all get ito the review or it will take me WEEKS to get it up online. I hope to have a teaser up there tonight. See ya, Work calls!

'Twas good to see all y'all, too! I was too beat to hang around afterwards. Soory! It sucks to get old. :P
