NEW LINK UPDATED Bearded Alan TV Interview (Online til ~ 5:30 EST Jan 3) re Dictionary of NL English

    New Link is http://www.cbc.ca/nl/

Then on right side banner under FEATURES - Twack That  (that's the name of the feature).  There's a pic of a woman holding a white shirt.  Now, when I tried to download, I had no luck - but if someone else does, let us know if it works.

Worthwhile.  Real cute - talking about words like sleveen & slime.

Online version of Dictionary of NL English : http://www.heritage.nf.ca/dictionary/d7ction.html

Can order paper edition of dictionary & cute NL sayings T shirts from Downhome http://www.shopdownhome.com/

BTW, caught the end of a great interview w Alan on a show called Meeting with remarkable people - a NTV (NL production with Jesse Stirling interviewing him).  The show is on @ 11:30 am on Sundays and noon on Tuesdays.  Sorry it's not online - but here's a nice tidbit.  JS asked Alan if he ever wrote a song that he  thought was unappreciated.  Alan said "Yes, all of them.  Then he got serious and said that he was humbled whenever he brought a new song to Bob and Sean & they liked it and wanted to record it - and even more humbling when the fans liked it!!!

Also, Contest to make New Years Resolutions using NL words.  Can also use the NL words in describing the resolutions (or redefine it):

Re: Bearded Alan TV Interview (Online Jan 2 & 3) re Dictionary of NL English

Yep, you can order a Newfoundland Dictionary from the Downhome...but there are at least two different ones that I know we carry, and yes, we do have the one that is featured in that bit.  And we do carry the t-shirts (by the Twackwear company) too, but at the moment we don't have the full selection of words/expressions (that was filmed in the shoppe on a day I was off).  However, we expect to do a reorder of them by about May for the summer cruise ship season!  If you live in the area go and take a look at what's currently in stock.

Oh, and the restaurant the interview with Alan took place is amazing!  Velma's, and they do have a fair bit of traditional Newfoundland food available on the menu there.  BTW, toutons and lassie is a wonderful breakfast...I think I'm going to slip over to Velma's tomorrow for breakfast now.  I'm craving toutons and lassie now!

I'm a little lost (so what else is new?...) I clicked on "Watch CBC News Here & Now" and then I'm given a choice of  "Hourly newsbreak" "latest newscast" " & Live broadcast". Where do I find it?

Thanks Bonnie. It took forever to download & save to desktop but I got to see it. Now I've got another book I'll have to get. My sister's already gotten me some NL books for Christmas, including The Dictionary of Newfoundland & Labrador by Ron Young, but not the one that they're talking about.

ok I'll say it, Alan, love ya man, hate the beard though. Sorry I know I will probably be banned for life but I really dont like it.

Great story though. I have an old book called Canajen, eh?  that is another classic that I love.

It is still there...the link in not on the extreme right of the page though.  Look for Listen/Watch Online, and then under that click on Watch CBC News: Here & Now.  Once you've got the little list popped open click on Latest Broadcast to watch it.  The broadcast is 60 minutes long, but the piece starts about 48:15.

With the beard without the beard, he is always a fine looking gentleman!

O.K. so he has a beard in this interview ,but the photos from the 12/28 show he has none! Did he get a new razor for Christmas? Bob seems to have facial hair in the 12/28 pics though! They all look healthy and happy though, and thats good enough for me!

Perhaps I can pick up one of those books in the summer on my excursion...Bonnie could you put one on hold for me? I'm coming to get it!

LOL Binny... to funny... I'm with ya on the beard thing... I don't like facial hair on ANY man... not even my own... don't mind the soul patch... but a full beard.. nope, no way is the hubby growing one... it's grounds for divorce in my house.. LOL.. well not really... but there would definatly be no kisses from me if my hubby grew out a beard...

Re: Bearded Alan TV Interview (Online Jan 2 & 3) re Dictionary of NL English

That's so funny, Lisa, cause I'm the complete opposite.  Soul patches make me wanna grab the bearer by the ears and say "LOOKIT!  Grow a beard or don't!  Pick one!  Make a commitment!"  A full beard isn't as scratchy as it looks-it actually can be quite soft!  The hubster currently sports a full beard, and I don't mind it at all, so long as he keeps it neat.  I'd never tolerate a soul patch tho!  I'd be like "Um, honey?  ya missed a spot!"  Ah well, to each her own!

Re: Bearded Alan TV Interview (Online Jan 2 & 3) re Dictionary of NL English

LOL. I also like the look of tidy facial hair on a lot of men, but I'm with Lisa on the scratchy kissing sensation. Not for me. Mine has a goatee, which I call the goat because it feels like one. And now ladies, on the verge of discussing goats and kissing, I'll shove off. Hidey-ho!
