Great Big Gift for Daffodil Place
Great Big Sea has announced that all
of the proceeds from their Great Big Christmas Concert will go to Daffodil

grateful to Great Big Sea for the selfless gesture. The Great Big Christmas Show
will be held December 28th at the Delta St. John's and will include special
guests The Novaks. Tickets will go on sale for the show at noon on November 24th

accommodation offering the comforts of home and the privacy that will help
patients on the road to recovery. For those in cancer treatment, it will provide
meal services, emotional and practical support programs, access to information,
in-treatment wellness programs and transportation to care facilities.

$1 MILLION MILESTONE!
 |
 |
(St. John’s, NL) October 25, 2007 – The Daffodil Place Campaign today
announced that more than one million dollars has been raised to build the
facility for cancer patients who must travel to St. John’s for treatment that
could save their lives. Being built by the Canadian Cancer Society, Daffodil
Place will be the first facility of its kind in the province to offer dedicated
accommodations and services designed for people undergoing cancer treatment.
The Chairman of the Campaign, John Steele, made the announcement on the site
where Daffodil Place will be constructed. Steele said “We are quite proud of
what has been achieved since we launched Daffodil Place in May of this year.
Over one million dollars has been raised since we started”. Steele added that
discussions with companies doing business in the province are very positive in
terms of their support for the Daffodil Place project and said “the corporate
community is 100% behind this project.”
Significant contributions have come from the Loyal Orange Lodge Hostel
Association and the VOCM Cares Foundation. The Campaign has also received a
great deal of support from businesses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. In
addition, community fundraising has played a huge role in reaching the $1
million milestone. More than $250,000 has been garnered through events organized
by service clubs, businesses, schools, golf associations, motorcyclists and
church groups in locations all over the province.
The members of the Campaign Cabinet for Daffodil Place are out in the community
seeking support from the corporate sector and the community at large. Member
Alan Doyle says he is encouraged by how people are reacting to the Daffodil
Place project. Doyle says, “Everywhere we go, everyone we meet is excited about
this project. People understand the need for this facility and want to help
build Daffodil Place for all of Newfoundland and Labrador.” The Daffodil Place
Campaign will raise an additional $6 million over the next three years.
The 24-room Daffodil Place will be re-constructed at the site of the Elim
Pentecostal Church in St. John’s. It will bring together, accommodations, a
resource centre, and all the programs and services offered by the Canadian
Cancer Society.
In 2006 an estimated 2,300 people in this province were diagnosed with cancer.
That number is likely to increase over time as the population ages. Many people
with cancer must travel to St. John’s for specialized treatment. They are
responsible for the cost of their own travel and accommodation for up to six
weeks.
According to research, one in three rural patients pays more than $200 for
travel and lodging for a single visit. One in 11 pays more than $1,000. Some
people battling cancer must find an additional $5,000 or more each time they
have to stay in St. John’s for treatment. Many people with cancer and their
families must endure these costs while facing a reduced family income. When
Daffodil Place opens its doors in late 2008, it will provide a place that people
diagnosed with cancer can call home when it means the most.
The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization of
volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and to enhance the quality of
life of people living with cancer.
