MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

So I am a college freshman this year, yay, and I am currently attending a community college for financial reasons. 3 kids in college cost a lot. So I decided to do m general university requirements here then transfer after 2 years. One of the colleges I am looking at is the Sir Welfred Grenfell College MUN campus. I got one of those info packet thingys so I'm sent there, but if anyone has been to Corner Brook, NL and/or the campus has anything they want to add I would super appreciate it. My sister is currently a international student at Uvic so it'll be cool to be an expatriate with her..the 'x' makes it sound cool. Anyway, thanks bundles. I hope to go into Environmental sciences and geology. If that helps any. Wow it's been awhile since I've posted here. They need to come to Portland so I have something to post about!

Hello, current MUN student here...no, I don't go to any classes at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell campus, but my understanding is that the fees are still the same as attending the main MUN campus here in St. John's.  From anybody I've spoken to the campus there is small, at least compared to the main campus...but it looks beautiful from everything I've seen. :)

Plus tuition is only 7,978.33 USD! Although it will take me forever to learn to say it's tongue twisting name

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

    Hey there,

Well, I can't give you any specific details on degree programs and whatnot, but I'm a first year student at Grenfell and I absolutely love it. As you said, tuition is basically the cheapest anywhere in Canada (minus Quebec) and there are a bunch of perks to SWGC. Class sizes are really quite small -- my biggest has only about 40 people, whereas you would be looking at much bigger basic courses at the main MUN campus. The profs really make an effort to get to know you, and they will help you out as much as they can. Plus, the city is great; 25,000 people, but all the necessities of a bigger place. There's a lot to do there at all seasons, but if you like skiing or snowboarding you're right next door to the BEST skiing east of the Rockies at Marble Mountain! Anyway, that's my speil; I'm from the west coast of Newfoundland and I'm gonna promote it as best I can!!

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

Thanks, everone here is very helpful. I'm a little apprehensive at transfering to a school halfway through, everyone in my class would have already gotten to know each other. But from what I've heard from you and Bonnie, I don't think that'll be a problem. Everyone sounds incredibly friendly and outgoing. So far I've sold my dad on the idea, mostly because he wants to visit Newfoundland. But my mom is going to be a little harder, she's doesn't want me living so far away. But I've got 2 years to convince her and I'll be 20 by then (daunting) so she might a little less reluctant. We are planning on visiting Corner Brook and possibly St. John's sometime in the next year and a half to check everything out. I do have a question, on the website, for international students, it says that room rate are 1,000-1,500 CDN. Does that include a meal plan or is the meal plan seperate. I looked around the site a little bit and couldn't find anything referring to a meal plan. Also, Where I am has the best skiing and snowboarding west of the Rockies! So I'm glad that'll be one thing I won't miss!

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

Because I live off-campus I had to ask around, but from what I understand you do have to pay for a meal plan that is sort of attached to your room-rate plan...It didn't make much sense to me but I'm sure that there is some contact info available on the MUN website. Definitely check it out :)

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

It said something about how Students are responsible for their own meals. I'm not sure if that means you have a kitchen and you make your own food. or if there isn't a meal plan and you just pay as you buy.

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

Hey- i'm also thinking of going to SWGC when a graduate from my high school in VT.  i visited SWGC this summer and loved it. i want to go into the wildlife biology field and i love singing/playing so NL would be great for anyone with interests in science and/or the arts.  the meal plan is quite different from other colleges because you have to either cook your own food or go down to the pub that's on campus (or into town to eat).  corner brook is out there for someone that lives near portland, but it seems like a fun place and i can't wait to graduate and go there!  definately check it out

    cheers, kerry sullivan

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

I can't wait to leave the semi-big town that I live in (I'm a bit northwest from Portland). But my parents want me to be ABSOLUTELY sure before we even visit.

I realized that since I'll most likely will be transfering in 2 years (for Junior year) that I most likely won't be living on campus and so the whole meal plan thing doesn't matter, even if there was one. But there is the possiblity that I'll be transfering next year, depending on various life factors. But I am super excited! I can't wait. Of course if I don't live on campus there's the whole 'finding a place to live while I'm 3,000 miles away' deal.

I'm not sure exactly what I want to study yet. It's a toss-up between the Social/Cultural Studies and Environmental Stuides or Environmental Sciences.

Thanks for all the help, it's...helped...a lot.

    Hey Kris!

It's not always easy to find a place off-campus but I do have a couple of suggestions for you - check the MUN off-campus housing like on the main MUN website, and check out nlclassifieds.com.  I had actually put a wanted ad on nlclassifieds.com and I was contacted by my current landlady that way...she was nice enough to offer to send pictures of the suite to me but I was fortunate to have a friend here who took some for me.

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

Yeah I looked around a bit and figured thats what I'd have to do.

Thank you all again for your help, I'll probably have tons more questions later on, a lot of them stupid (I always seem to miss obvious things, I'm an oblivious person)

I ordered one of those info packet thingys but since I'm ALLLL THE WAY over on the west coast, it is taking forever to get here.

Snailmail is awesome, it gives me something to look forward too. Along with netflix, christmas catalogs and Western Oregon University who still send me letters addressed to Lcris (my handwriting may be atrocious but who names their child Lcris? I mean, come on.)

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

So I recently talked to my guidance councilor and we went over exactly what I'd have to do to transfer to a Canadian College. Well it turns out no one really knows. They know about doing graduate studies in Canada and going straight from High School to Canada, but nothing about transferring halfway thru. So either I can do a ton of work and end up in 2 years finding out I didn't do the RIGHT work. Or I can transfer to an American College and do SWGC for Graduate Studies. Which is probably what I'm gonna end up doing. So I'm still going, just in 3.5 years and not 1.5 years.

Thank you guys for all your help!

    Kris

Re: MUN - Sir Welfred Grenfell College

    Hello
So I know this might sound alittle crazy but I wanted to thank you for helping me in this thread.... I am now at college but am looking for somewhere else to go next year and another program to take... I am one of those people that need to know where I am going next year and what I am going to be doing... I have been waiting for a sign since I got here for next year and I came on here one night last week and saw this thread, I checked out the website and found an awesome program I could take. I am SO happy I just now need to find out if I am able to apply and what not. So thank you for helping me find my sign!!!

p.s. If anyone has any information on school about applying and such I would really love to hear the info.. thank you!!
