seaworthy:First dozen times I heard Tickle Cove Pond I thought Alan was singing in Cotton and Holland instead of in cutting and hauling. That baffled me for a spell. I kept wondering how they grow cotton so far north and what does Holland have to do with it?
For the longest time, Tickle Cove Pond was just a collection of syllables to me. I heard "cotton" too, and was confused; didn't hear "Old Virgin Whites," but that line was also incomprehensible. I also didn't know what a "tickle" was. Yeah, that song was hopelessly confusing for a while.

BetRx: Chiarascura: Where's Betty? She was gonna hook me up with an oxygen tank for the emphysema section.
I think it would be more enjoyable if I brought you a tank of nitrous oxide. Unless, by then they have found a way to make rum in gaseous form.
Oh, Betty, I'm just gonna declare omakase on this one. You fill the tank with whatever you think I'll enjoy the most, you seem to know a lot more about this than I do. (Just throw in some of those herbal supplements they sell at the Chinese grocery stores, with the goat on the label.) And if you're making one for Fran as well, she'd like a Tiger in her tank ;-) Seaworthy - I think a tickle is a narrow little waterway, like in a cove or something. I could be wrong, but it's something like that - definitely a meaning different from "action that induces giggling."

I've always thought that the best sounding place to live in Newfoundland would be Leading Tickles. It just sounds like so much fun. And now that we're completely off subject... Chiarascura:
And if you're making one for Fran as well, she'd like a Tiger in her tank ;-) My tank could definitely use the Tiger, no rum necessary, unless you have to tank the Tiger first.

Yes, first you have to get the tiger tanked, then you can get your tank tigered. Or is it the other way around? Eenie meenie miny moe, catch the tiger by the tickle . . . no, wait, that's not right. Do you tickle the tiger by the tank? No, that's not right either. Oh, man, I'm confused. seaworthy:ha ha like I'm doing now? Wouldn't that be a
trickle? Eh what do we city kitties know bout this stuff anyway?
No, a trickle would be something slightly different ;) (Clean-up on aisle 8!) I
only know it 'cause "tickle" was mentioned in some other songs, till I
finally looked it up (or maybe just asked someone, I can't remember).

Ok, Fran caught one on one of the other threads so I'll come clean. I thought in She's goin' Up Tonight Alan sings cheeks n reels but I've been told it's jigs and reels so... I'm more into cheeks than jigs I guess. I stand corrected.

My bit of humour for the day... I've been listening to pre-GBS. Listening to "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Everyday" and heard the following... "Me name is John Stewart, a mechanic on Mars" To make it worse the line following it is "and a roving young fellow I've been." Someone does need to be able to supe up the Mars Rover, after all :)

If sea shanties were sung by working men, why would they need to enunciate? I had enough faith in Newfoundlanders' ability to have a good time I thought it only took two! (...we'll rant and we'll roar like...)
And if the car broke down You’d start blaming me
