"England" and the first Thanksgivng

For the month of November I have been teaching my Kindergarteners about the settlement of North AMerica, from the Asians who wandered here following the herds, to Native Americans, to the vikings, to the European explores and settlers.

The loved the Indian flute and drum music and dances.

But later in the unit, when I introduced the Pilgrims I played 'England" for them. They have developed this sort of reverence for the song! They sing it allt he time, and ask me to play it for them.

On Friday, they were making construction paper Mayflowers (turned Pirate ships) and they burst into choruses of "far from the shores of England" and i managed to catch them on video!

Tell me about your Canadian thanksgiving please!.

Turkey Day has always been my family's big holiday. This year the Turkey Baster Was Passed! My Mother Informed a sister that Thanksgiving dinner would be at HER house, Granny is done!

I just googled it and discovered Canadian Thanksgiving is on a Monday. As stupid as it sounds, I was stunned! What Is Wrong With Those People?

I think it really has to do with when the Harvest occurs, and further north from me it will be earlier.

The Center for Performing Arts in Olympia, WA doesn't allow people to stand and enjoy themselves, only along the sides (of which that held 20 or 30 folks!) After the 1st break, Alan, true to his word had us standing up....better to enjoy yourself, at least I did. I brought 2 novices with me (not that I'm a veteran having only been to one concert before), my friends are now true believers!

Floor tables are divided into two groups "A" which are on the left and "B" which are on the right.

Tables 1-5 are front row, 6-11 are second row, 12-17 are third row, etc.

For anyone who has never been there before, the Admiral is a pretty small theater. I've sat in the balcony for shows before and there really isn't a bad seat in the house.

The boys were fantastic last night and the Edmonds Center for the Arts is a great venue for a Great Big Sea Concert. All the songs were the songs I hoped we would hear and the new song was great. Keep up the good work and hope to see you back here after the release of your new album next year, can't hardly wait.

After having to cancel to Merlefest show in Wilkesboro, NC this past spring as Alan filmed Robin Hood, Pollstar is listing that GBS is scheduled to play again April 30th & May 1st, 2010.

Anyhow, I've got Something Beautiful to share with everybody today.

I get home from a rough day at work and am pleasantly surprised to find a package sent to me from Newfoundland. Now, I knew that my friend Carol was sending me something when she was visiting and she said that it was coming from O'Brien's. Well, I wasn't expecting what I got - a gorgeous tipper not only designed by, but also SIGNED by Séan. I'm still giddy and my son is convinced that I've gone right around the bend....he's right....

So, a HUGE hug goes out to Carol for the beautiful gift! And a special thanks to Séan for signing it!

Since I finally figured out how to start a new thread (im not slow....really) I thought this might be fun. Here's a chance for everyone to post the things that makes us GBS fans....unique. The things that make our non-gbs-loving friends look at us and say " Are you crazy??"

For Example :

You know your a GBS Fan WHEN..

- You drive down the road listening to STH at full volume, and all the older neighbours who happen to be out moving their lawn, stop and stare. Then when you wave, they pretend they dont know you.

- You sing 'Feel it Turn' in the shower on a regular basis...

I have no way to make this show, I am only asking the ticket cost. I bought them on the GBS site, so i think they are cheaper than from ticketmaster $59.00 x2

Section 108 row 10... from what i have seen on the Saddledome layout, they seem in a nice spot for level 1

Since we are currently lacking a Fun and Games board, I decided to start a game thread here. I completely yoinked this game from squeezeboxsarah. (Hope you don't mind!)

One person gives a topic (ex- 'Movies with numbers in the title) and the next person lists five things that fit into that topic (ex- Twelve Monkeys, The Sixth Sense, 28 Days, Nine Months, Thirteen Ghosts), then gives another topic (ex- top vacation spots or martial arts stars)

Hi Everyone! Long time no chat!

I have a question for you all. I was wondering if anyone was possibly travelling from Alberta (Edmonton would be fantastic!) to either Philadelphia or Eastern Ontario. I have a friend who runs an inner city music program in Philly, and I'm trying to get my rarely-used guitar to her for her program. If anyone is travelling that way, or knows of a way that I can ship it out there that won't cost more than the guitar is worth, I'd greatly appreciate it.

First question: If you were in a car and one of the b'ys was driving, which one would you want behind the wheel?

I'd pick Bob. He seems safest, but then again, you never know. People say its the quiet ones you have to look out for and if that's true, then I'd definitely go with Alan...I'm really just interested in staying alive...

And I think I'm going to submit a new question every weekish, depending on when inspiration hits me.

I got observed today. I tried to do all that we have been told to do in the course of a lesson, with the last thing being told to us last night in an email. (They keep adding things to the lessons we have to teach) Well, the class was all out of sorts and I got maybe 1/2 done of what I was supposed to do. Three of the four kids with identified behavior problems were totally off, the class was a mess, and nothing went as planned. I was not a good teacher by any stretch of the imagination. I felt like I was grasping at straws. This is how I have mostly felt this year and probably how I will feel the rest of the year. I am looking for something else to dao. Any ideas about what kind of job I'd be good at? I don't think I want to do this anymore, it's become too hard. I am serious - please give me suggestions on what I'd be good at. It may be worth it to me to take a penalty on my pension just to get out.

Children with disabilities

Since everyone is so friendly here and we all chat anyway, I was wondering if any of you have children with disabilities of any kind, physical or otherwise? The reason I ask is because my son has Asperger's Syndrome, a high functioning form of autism and often I feel very alone and frustrated with no one to talk to. Many times I don't even go to functions that involve people we don't see a lot because I end up feeling like the national spokesperson for Asperger's syndrome, always explaining to everyone what it is(though I don't mind explaining to anyone here if need be). It's a complicated syndrome and it has touched many areas of our lives and my son has dealt with many problems himself usually due to people's lack of understanding. I love my son so much, but it can be very frustrating dealing with the afflictions caused by AS, and I many times feel guilty for feeling this way when he has to live with this for the rest of his life inside his own skin. But I think having friends on the OKP to talk to when things aren't so great would really lift my spirits and maybe some of you feel the same? A support group of sorts. Anyone interested?

ChiTownKim, did you get a ticket? I saw on another thread that you were stumping for one - hope I get to see you again! Looking forward to seeing Janiell again at Edmonds! I'm sure Lynda will be at both of these shows since they're so close to home, and hopefully AnnR as well (maybe I'll even get to see you at the airport on the way down????). Other than those naughty ones you ladies might have of Sean .... ANyone else ever dream of Great Big Sea?

I had two this week. Don't remember the first one, but the last one I was in a big kitchen (a party!) and making sandwiches for people - roast beef, ham and pastrami, 3 kinds of cheese, but I couldn't remember who wanted what! Someone started singing End of the World, but either couldn't sing it fast enough or couldn't remember all the words so we started singing Ordinary Day. Alan was standing to one side smiling, eating a sandwich!

We received our brochure for the 2009-2010 season at the Mt. Baker Theatre and I just about keeled over when I saw that GBS appearing on Sunday, November 22!!!! I don't know if they've played B'ham before, but it's the first time I've been aware of it. It goes nicely with our September Malkin Bowl date. I can't recall the last time I was THIS surprised ... in a good way!

For those in the dark, Bellingham is a great little city about a half hour south of the Canadian border and a couple hours north of Seattle, and the MBT is a beautiful, old (in a good way) theater that just finished a year-long restoration. It holds about 1500.
