    Ontario in the summer

    um hi?

I may be going to Ontario in the summer. I've never been there and I wondered what kind of weather you have in the summer?

I don't know exactly where in Ontario I'm going but it would probally be in August. If anyone could tell me the general weather and/or any must see stuff near there I would be very grateful. As I said I've never been there before so if anything I've said sounds stupid ignore it - I know nothing really about Canada so please  bear with me. Huh?

    thanks. -x-

    Re: Ontario in the summer

Ontario is a very large province.  Southern Ontario at least (Niagara Falls/Toronto area) is humid, humid, oh and did I mention - HUMID!

I'm at work right now and don't have much time to post, but what are your interests?  Sightseeing?  Nature?  Hiking?  History?  Museums?  Galleries?  There's a lot to see and do.  If you know a general area of where you'll be (for example Toronto is quite far from Timmins) that will help narrow down on suggesting some highlights.

Lest see Ontario in the summer: wet, dry, hot, cold, damp, dry, rainy, humid, in short prepare for everything. I've driven a good chunk of Ontario, in all kinds of weather and it's an amazing place. As for what to see and do, what are you interested in and where are you going to be. Ottawa, Toronto and Sudburry have some pretty interesting museums and galleries, Thundbay and again Sudburry have some of the most amazing rock hunting and geologic displays you can ever see. Peterborough also has some great Geology. Niagara Falls is a not to be missed if you're in the area ( I am about 30- 40 min away by a reasonable driver.) History is all over the place from Ft Erie to Ottawa to Timmins to you name it, it's there. Post when you know your destination and we'll be able to show you a grand time!

    Re: Ontario in the summer

I'd be going to the South of Ontario. I'm interested in nature quite a lot, so thats the geologic displays and if there are any galleries that you know are amazing I would go there too.

Thanks for your advice, I sorry I'm so vague as to where I'm going as we haven't sorted it out yet. My uncle lives somewhere in the south of Ontario so we'd be visiting him.

    Thanks again!Smile

The McMicheal gallery in Kleinburg, north of Toronto, is amazing, showcasing the works of the Group of Seven, a group of artists who were known for their unique representations of Canadian Landscapes.  If I recall correctly (it's been over 20 years) they also have Native art there too.  Even the grounds themselves are amazing.  Check it out at www.mcmicheal.com

And if you are in Ontario in July you've GOT to have some sweet corn on the cob.  I had some guests from the UK once who were totally grossed out, but really, it's beyond yummy, with lotsa butter, salt and pepper, and if you don't get butter dripping down your chin, you don't have enough on there!! mmmmmmmmmm.

    Re: Ontario in the summer

southern ontario gets pretty hot... pretty darn hot actually...
+30 Temperatures most of the days this past summer... the end of August tends to get very rainy, and even downright cold...

so for july, you'll need a lot of clothes to comabt the heat...

places to visit? there's plenty of provincial parks and other nature reserves to check out all over the region!

    Re: Ontario in the summer

Well I realise that it's not quite as south as Toronto, but Sudbury (being about 4hrs drive north)  has got two awesome places if you're interested in geology, Dynamic Earth (used to be the Big Nickel Mine) and Science North. Dynamic Earth is all about mining and geology and rocks and also has the biggest piece of loose change in the country (the Big Nickel). They also have an underground tour of an old mine and do the history on mining in Ontario. Science North is a similar idea but it's much more diversified and has exhibits that come and go. Really fun place for kids and adults alike.

You said you were interested in southern ontario but I figured I'd add a shameless plug for my town :-)

    Southern Ontario in the summer!

Pack your bug spray.  And sunblock.  Bring a bathing suit and sweaters.  And be ready for smog!

Some websites to check out for ideas:

    www.ontarioparks.ca

    www.toronto.com

The Niagara Escarpment is pretty amazing, there are lots of fun activities in Collingwood, Muskoka and the Kawarthas (all cottage country areas).

And I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here...but please don't go to African Lion Safari.  I worked there once, for about a month.  They shut the animals up in pens and cages every night that DO NOT look big enough.  I know they market themselves by saying that the humans are locked up (in their cars) while the animals roam free, but that's only true between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
