    Re: The George Street Café

I went to two proms. I think the reason they suck is because people get into such a delusional state about how amazing it's going to be. I went in not expecting much (but still hoping) and was bored stiff.

Having said that, I honestly feel I'd really regret it now if I'd never gone. It doesn't have to be expensive. People throw money at prom because they're chasing the dream. It sucks to wake up, but then again that's what graduation is all about, so maybe prom is the perfect segue into life. (I'm an optimist...really.)

Perhaps, go with no expectations, and you may come out ahead.

When I was in grade 11 I went to the grade 12 grad, most of my friends were in grade 12. When I was in grade 12 most of my friends were i grade 11.  I went to the ceremony to get my diploma and partied that night. I didn't go to my grade 12 grad. Don't regret it for a sec.

    Re: The George Street Café

I dropped out of college because I lost my financial aid (mother went back to work), but I snuck into what would have been my graduation two years later, drank free beer and ate free sandwiches, and listened to a few speeches (they were entertaining speeches, but it was a REALLY hot day and after a while I opted to go home and take a shower!)  I'd always been a bit of a space alien in college anyway (most of my classmates were either extremely well-to-do or hard-driven ambitious) so it seemed like a fitting way to close the chapter.  I have nothing against the place - I like it a lot, really - but it's pitched to a mindset and a network that's just not relevant to me.

    Re: The George Street Café

    allright, i'll promenade.

i got a dress and shoes, all on a salerack (woot!). I decided to go because i have a lot of friends that are seniors this year, and i wanted to have a party with them. the girl who initiated our group made it clear that for us it will be "a night of friendship and good clean debauchery". thats what sold me: being with some amazing people (that i wont see very often after this year), having a good time in good company without the pressure to do things i personally am not comfortable with.

im actually looking foward to it now!

    it's not so bad.

Little thing a friend sent me:

Have you heard about the next planned 'Survivor' show?
Three businessmen and three businesswomen will be dropped in an elementary school classroom for 1 school year. Each business person will be provided with a copy of his/her school district's curriculum, and a class of 28 - 32 students.

Each class will have a minimum of five learning-disabled children, three with A.D.D., one gifted child, and two who speak limited English. Three students will be labeled with severe behavior problems.

Each class will have a minimum of five learning-disabled children, three with A.D.D., one gifted child, and two who speak limited English. Three students will be labeled with severe behavior problems.

Each business person must complete lesson plans at least 5 days in advance, with annotations for curriculum objectives and state frameworks... and then modify, organize, or create their materials accordingly. They will be required to teach students, handle misconduct, implement technology, document attendance, write referrals, correct homework, make bulletin boards, compute grades, complete report cards, document benchmarks, communicate with parents, and arrange parent conferences. They must also stand in their doorway between class changes to monitor the hallways.

In addition, they will complete fire drills, tornado drills, and [Code Red] drills for shooting attacks each month.

They must attend workshops, faculty meetings, and attend curriculum development meetings. They must also tutor students who are behind and strive to get their 2 non-English speaking children proficient enough to take the Stanford, Terra Nova, Diagnostics and MCAS tests. If they are sick or having a bad day they must not let it show.

Each day they must incorporate reading, writing, math, science, and social studies into the program. They must maintain discipline and provide an educationally stimulating environment to motivate students at all times. If all students do not wish to cooperate, work, or learn, the teacher will be held responsible.

The business people will only have access to the public golf cou rse on the weekends, b ut with their new salary, they may not be able to afford it. There will be no access to vendors who want to take them out to lunch, and lunch will be limited to thirty minutes, which is not counted as part of their work day. The business people will be permitted to use a restroom, as long as another survival candidate can supervise their class.

If the copier is operable, they may make copies of necessary materials before, or after, school. However, they cannot surpass their monthly limit of copies. The business people must continually advance their education, at  their expense, and on their own time.
The winner of this Season of Survivor will be allowed to return to their job.

Pass this to your friends who think teaching is easy, and to the ones
    who know it's hard!

I give up with the above. I have no idea why it copied twice and it will not allow me to remove it. I am sorry it's double.

    Delaney:

I'm still deciding. I don't want to go, and I'm certain I won't, but I keep getting all these people telling me how much I'll regret it if I don't.

    Hi Paula and Delaney!

I went to my Junior Banquet, and it was a wonderful night, but I decided to skip the Senior Prom.  This was in 1988, right after "Pretty in Pink" came out, and all of my friends were completely freaked out by the Annie Potts line when she tells about her friend who never got over missing the prom.  Of my 10 closest girl friends, 5 went and 5 didn't.  Each one of the five who went were the oldest girls in their families, and each of the five that didn't go, including myself, had older sisters who assured us all that missing the prom was not a big deal.

I can honestly and truly tell you, that 20 years later (yikes!) I don't regret my decision one little bit.  In fact, when I got into a car accident in my first year of college and needed to buy a new car, I was pretty stinking thankful that I hadn't spent every penny I had in the bank on the prom.

If you decide to go, have a great time, but if you decide to sit it out, don't sweat it.  I promise you, you won't be scarred for life!  Big Smile

    Betty

    Re: The George Street Café

    Delaney and Paula,

I'm all for Proms, but I had way more fun at my Junior Prom than I did at my Senior Prom.  Two of my personal kids went, two didn't. It didn't seem to affect them in any way, either way.

    Tina -

The person who wrote that HAD to be a teacher. That was prompted by a doctor who was reluctant to write a no-work pass to a collegue who broke her ankle and teaches on the thirs floor of our school. (we have no elevator) He said, "Just go to school and sit at your desk!" ROFLMAO. Uh, yeah. YOU try to teach a class and sit down! Maybe in High School or college if you're not a very good teacher... But elementary? Yeah, right!

Anne - I think the only reason they don't issue you rollerblades and goalie gear is because it would require a new line item in the budget.  What the heck, you're the Bionic Teacher anyway - maybe we can get a grant from Bill Gates to put long-range biochem scanners in your glasses so you can see when one of your kids has gone off their meds and is about to go ballistic...  "Sazqptuimfalg," (pronounced Jay) "will you please run an errand for me?"
