By the time I got here today, both were posted, but I ended up reading them in reverse order by accident. So I'm still laughing about the church service, when I read the other one, and I can hardly breathe for laughing!!!! Interesting picture too..

ok.. help settle a debate. alan's most recent post has spurred a freindly arguement about how much french versus english is spoken in Quebec, and other French-Canadian parts of canada.

    c'mon... i have $5 riding on this.

    From Wikipedia:

Quebec is the only Canadian province where French is the only official language. In 2001 the population was:

    • French speakers: 82.0%
    • English speakers: 7.9%
    • Others: 10.1% (Italian 5.2%, Spanish 2.3%, Arabic 2.9%, and others)

Northern New Brunswick along the Quebec border is similar, definitely more French than English. There are French speaking and bi-lingual enclaves in other parts of Canada too, especially in parts of Ontario.

    Re: Alan's From The Road!

Actually, he's saying something much like what my grandfather used to say and I've always agreed with.  A lot of my friends have gone to foreign countries and done all sorts of things I've never done.  However, I've frequently introduced them to interesting places within a short car ride from where they lived that they never bothered to find for themselves.  Maybe it's because I grew up without much money (still don't have much, as far as that goes), but I learned at a young age about the fascinating things to explore close to home.  My best friend went to Disneyland; I found a little canyon that a stream not a yard across had carved through granite about ten minutes walk from home.  Another friend lived in Japan for a year; I learned in intimate detail the route of the Battle of Lexington-Concord by walking it on a regular basis.  Still another friend has eaten in fine restaurants around the world; I know where to find wild blueberries and huckleberries about ten miles or so from Harvard Square.

I'm not saying their experiences were somehow less than mine, or that mine were less than theirs.  But my grandfather always wondered that people would spend so much time and money to see other places and never explore their own country.  And he could speak from experience- he's actually been to all the Continental US, every province in Canada, and Mexico.  He and Grandma almost made it to Alaska, but one of the group chickened out, so they had to turn back.  He taught my mother the joys of a road trip, and she in turn (with my father's whole-hearted approval), passed it to most of us.

Of course, I'm still totally jealous of my friend who got to see a comet through the aurora borealis in the middle of the North Atlantic.  Oceanic science-types get all the best views...

Katfairy - I don't spend as much time in the open a I'd like.  I work a day job and run a business out of my basement apartment, and my day job has no windows.  But when the subway crosses a bridge, I really look out the window - at Boston, at boats, at the sunset, at the electric sputterings of the overhead wires reflected in thick night snow.  And oftentimes other folks do too.  It's contagious. Re: Alan's From The Road!

Did anyone know that Goderich, once the "Prettiest town in Canada" has three museums? And that you can pay one price to visit all of them? I admit I've only been to two of them, several times each, because the rest of my family did not want to visit the third. One of the museums is an historic gaol, one is the history of Huron County, with an interesting taxidermy section in the basement for things like two headed calves and the Huron County Archives. The third is a nautical museum for Lake Huron. I think it's mostly underground, but that's the one I've never been to. There are also beautiful parks in Goderich on the edge of the bluff, one of which has a lighthouse and a plaque about the tidal wave that hit Goderich in the 20's, I think.

Too much time spent wandering Goderich on foot...

New Brunswick is our only province which is officially bi-lingual.

Alan, I'd love to go to any show you play half a days drive from my doorstep except I don't have a car.  Wanna pick me up next time you are playing that close?? Wink

Alan found the Arch and shares his thoughts and some photos in his From the Road!

"I can’t comment on how the Arch looks in the cold light of day, but at night, it is truly wondrous."

I wonder if Alan is going to keep sharing his pictures? These were so touristy. That's so cool!
