    Barretts Privateers

Hi. A couple of years ago I downloaded a copy of Barretts Privateers by GBS. My old computer bit the dust, and I lost it. Now I've been trying to find it again, and I don't see it on any of the albums. Anybody out there heard it, and know where I can find it? It's an incredible piece!

They've never actually recorded it. That version you downloaded was probably by the Irish Decendants (I think...). Someone just labelled it by GBS. It's still good though Big Grin

    Hey There!

This is such a wonderful accapella (sp?) song. It was written by Stan Rogers and is so powerful. If you want information and lyrics, go to the Fogarty Cove Site; http://www.stanrogers.net

    cheers, moe

Just popping in to say that if you have the choice between the ID version of the song or Stan's go for Stan's. IMO, it's got more power and passion and who can top his style?

    Re: Barretts Privateers

I have to agree with moe and sapphire. The Stan Rogers version IS powerful. And while we are on the topic of Stan Rogers, I could think of a few of his other songs I'd like to hear GBS sing. What's your favorite Stan song? Mine would have to include Forty five years (for the sentimental value), Fogarty's Cove, The Mary Ellen Carter, and of course, White Squall.

    Re: Barretts Privateers

I LOVE Stan! S'all good! But The Mary Ellen Carter tops 'em for me for sentimental(sp?) reasons and 45 years for the same reason.

    Re: Barretts Privateers

Can you pick a favourite Stan song? That's like picking a favourite GBS song or your favourite child. Wink If I had to pick though, Forty-five Years would be right at the top. I think "The Woodbridge Dog Disaster"(or something like that) would be pretty close, too. That one always makes me laugh.

I also really like the spoof of Barrett's that Garnet does called "Garnet's Homemade Beer". If you ever need to laugh out loud, look that one up! laugh

    Re: Barretts Privateers

I agree it's very hard to pick one favourite song by Stan Rogers, he wrote so many wonderful ones. I'd have to go with 'Forty-five years". "The Mary Ellen Carter" and "Field Behind the Plough"(being the daughter of a farmer, this one chokes me up every time I herar it!)

    Re: Barretts Privateers

You know what makes it really hard to choose your favorite?

Stan was such an artist in performance that I have my favorites on Cd but I have my favorites in concert, only because of his wonderful storytelling to each.

Hmmmm... Barrett's Privateers has to be my most favorite song on CD.

As for live performance? *moe thinking and shaking her head* .... I can't choose Red Face)

    Re: Barretts Privateers

Ah yes, I somehow forgot about "Field Behind the Plow". that too is a great song. Love the story in it.

You're right, it is difficult to choose a favorite. There are too many.

You know, even though its been 22 years since he died, I still regret this: He was playing a show in my area just about 2 weeks before he died. I passed on going to the show, as a sort-of friend was getting married at an out of town location. I just thought to myself, well, I'll catch him next time around. It just goes to show you, you never know......

I'm a fan of White Squall myself. Northwest Passage and Free in the Harbour are also great ones.
