I think that's how they invented the peep show.

RE: Rant and Roar, I always heard it "It's yokey I'll be" and thought of those wooden thingys, what are they called? They look like a board with a two wrist holes and a head hole, that the prisoner was locked into on display in a town square or whatever, to add humiliation to the punishment. What WERE those things called! I'm off to Bob-I mean google that.... Stocks...that's what they're called. Chokey could also refer to hanging. Would polygamy have been a capitol offense at one time? Could be.

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

You're talking of stocks made me think that my "I can't marry or, lord, it's yokey I'll be" can make some bizarre sense. Yoked. If he marries he'll be yoked.

Actually, that's exactly what I thought too - I thought it was something like "yokey" and that it meant the stocks. Seems like an appropriate old-fashioned punishment for a polygamist.

Another lyrics question, actually - Is it, "I can handle a jigger, I cuts a fine figure whenever I gets in a boat's standing room"? That makes very little sense. Do boats have standing rooms? Anyone know?

ETA: Hey, he started it, all this naughty talk of marrying them all.

    That's what I hear too.

I don't know exactly why, but I always thought that meant he was a good dancer when he had enough room.

I always thought I "cuts a fine figure" meant that he looks good  from afar on the boat.

According to the dictionary, you are right Fran. He looks good or cleans up well in the standing room of the boat.

    Re: Mis-Heard GBS Lyrics

That just reminded me of something Alan said at the Northampton show. He said, "Wow, I feel so close to the audience. At a lot of shows, you don't really get this close up to the people. It makes me wish that we were better-looking."

Coy little bugger, it's a miracle he didn't fall over with the huge wave of estrogen that splashed out toward him at that moment.

I actually also thought it referred to dancing, but I thought it was a little weird - dancing on a boat? Maybe a party boat or something . . . So Fran and Lyndzchick are probably right.

    That's too funny!  Angel

Yeah, I'm sure they're right.  I think it must be the proximity of the words "jigger" (jig) and "cuts" (cut a rug, perhaps?) that made me think it was talking about dancing.

Still don't know what a standing room is.

Please correct this someone: "Until we strikes bottom inside the 2 sunkers when straight thru the channel that our ??? will go". (I actually hear "that Oslo will go".

I believe it's "when straight through the channel to Toslo we'll go."  Toslo is a harbour in Newfoundland, i think, if the Internet is to be believed. :-)

That makes sense! I kept hearing Oslo, too.

Good geography lessons, these songs are.
