This is the same bodhran bag I mentioned earlier.  I use this one for my tunable:

18.5" Superior Bodhran Bag (19 avail)

ETA:  There are actually a BUNCH of gigbags out on ebay at the moment.  I've never seen so many or such a variety!  There is even a TWEED one! *L*

And this drum (16" tunable - 12 avail) looks worth considering.  And the seller has a 100% positive rating on over 200 transactions!

    Hey guys,

Don't forget about regular drum kit drum bags/cases. The bag I have for my bodhran is a 16 inch tom bag. It was $50. Might be worth checking out .... here's a picture of the bag with my drum (great quality bag for not so much money." />

    Re: Beat the Drum!

Well Mike seemed to be looking for fa unctional starter... competent but reasonably priced.  It seems most people aren't interested in dropping a few hundred on a drum and accessories...

There's just a few of us wacky ones! *LOL*  I had wondered about some of the standard drum cases.  I've seen a couple that looked promising.  I was thinking about packing my baby up and trying a few out as only my Cooperman's has a truly nice case.

How's the new bodhran breaking in toffee?

Definitely a starter.  Won't be gigging, so a soft case will work fine.

Ebay's out though - can't use my AMex gift card with Paypal - found that out after winning the auction for a digital recorder!   Angry

    Re: Beat the Drum!

Ok, got an inexpensive non-tuneable bodhran.  In this winter weather the house heat keeps the head very dry and much too high-pitched.  Misting with water helps, but it soon dries out again.  Any suggestions?  Of course, in teh summer it will be the opposite problem, and will be using the hairdryer a bunch, I'm sure.

    Re: Beat the Drum!

Rub lanolin or mink oil onto the head, that usually helps.  It's what I do at least once a season.

    Re: Beat the Drum!

I use mink oil on mine...not so cheap, hand-made, not tuneable...I use my hands to rub it in on both sides of the skin (and wood)...heat from the friction causes poors to open...then I wipe it with a soft facecloth.

Works for me!  Not that I can actually play it, or anything winked...that's another story!

I live in So NH, formerly next to a lake, now by river and marshes...haven't actually noticed a prob with humidity...perhaps the mink oil also renders the skin 'moisture-proof'???

    Re: Beat the Drum!

    I'm going through bodhran-withdrawal here, major-like!!!

I told myself last week that I wasn't allowed to play my bodhran until I finished my personal statement to send with my college application.  That was a week ago and I just finished the essay a few hours ago... and I'm at work, so I can't play it now!!

    Re: Beat the Drum!

These pictures are (I think) 7 1/2 months old or so, and I have more recent ones saved on a disk, but I thought I'd post them here for fun.  Zak was only 14 months old when I took them, but I was already threatening my sister that I'd make a drummer out of him!

Every time I picked up the camera he would set the tipper on the floor, so I didn't get any of him actually playing...

    Re: Beat the Drum!

Hey, nobody told me the pictures weren't showing up!  I don't know why they shouldn't be... I didn't delete or move them - they're still where they were when I posted them!

Oh, well... if anyone's interested, here they are. This was my Walton's drum (the one Kevin gave me); I got my Vignoles about three weeks after these were taken, but I do have pictures of him playing with that one when Dad and I went to see Cindy (in October, I think?), just not uploaded to Photobucket:

I found some mink oil at IGA today when I went with my mom.  I'm glad it was mentioned here, or I would never have noticed it!  Yes, it did smell pretty funky, but I was thinking about buying some.  Does anyone else have a review of the stuff, positive or negative?
