Jesus Christ, I just came across 'Metrobus' ! What a cool Bob-song! Also, I found a song called 'Great Big Sea' ( by Danny Burn's Defectors) and another one called 'A Great Big Sea hove in Long Beach' by a certain Alan Mills, both quite nice. How weird.... Love and Fanship Jule

Hi Nepomuk Jule Great song eh ! If you want to hear some more Bob, listen to a great song by The Irish Descendants, called " Downtown Girl " , I was lucky enough to have a friend send me a copy of their CD, brand spankin' new in the shrink wrap ! , it's a great CD, with many good songs on it. Bob, along with Alan and Sean, sing a verse on " Downtown Girl " , and do a great job of it. Another song on there is called "Money Alone" , which Alan sings from time to time. He performed this on the Ships And Dip III cruise, ... you know it .... "la de da ... not for the money alone .. la de da " U can watch Alan performing that song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqmOfbYsQDI ( if your 'puter can handle it, click the HD button, it's 1000x more clear than standard viewing mode )
More info on this CD here, http://www.irishdescendants.com/Albums.html#SS The album is entitled "Southern Shore " Bob's verse: " then I went to her house to meet her mother and her father ..... when I got to the door they confused me with another "

Frosty, Since you mentioned "Downtown Girl" I have to recommend Jim Fidler's "Gypsy" CD which has the original version of Downtown Girl (Jim wrote it) on it. Ironically, the first time I heard Downtown Girl was when GBS sang it at the Painted Bride in 1998(9?). The audience went nuts over it. I subsequently met and became friends with Jim, who told me a couple years ago that he was in Rankin Street right before they became Great Big Sea. Small world isn't it? Check out Jim's music - You can't tie him down to a genre, but if you like Newfoundland Celtic-type music, Gypsy and Midnight Rover might be more your preference. That being said, Friendly Fire and Musiak:In This World are the most-played Fidler CDs in my player. You can listen to samples here. He is putting out a new CD at the end of July, a reggae cd! Check at his website or listen to samples during his podcasts, which you can listen to here. Anne

Did you try ordering it straight from GBS? http://www.greatbigsea.com/store/Product.aspx?id=DM000087

Hi Anne ! wow, you ARE a wealth of information aren't ya eh ! , I went and listened to Jim's version of "Downtown Girl" , iTunes played it for me. I'm really glad that you piped in with that info, and gave Jim some recognition, as I had NO clue he had written that song, and I'm sure many, if not most had no clue either. I'm sure people living in his area would know this, but living further away in Canada, I have never even heard of him before, so thanks again for bringing his name up for all of us. I'll go and listen to some more of his stuff this evening, thanks for the linky-poos. Frosty.

Jule - I recently bought the Great Big Sea album from Amazon and had it in no time flat. There are some real treasures on it ... no spoilers here, but it's definitely worth tracking down. I love hearing the guys' voices from way back - they sound younger, far less polished, but you see where their appeal came from and how much of what they do now is true to what they've been doing all along. It's a great glimpse of their history and helps put their newer tunes into context. I'm happy I got it. Good luck!

Pleased to meet you Mr. Fidler - thanks Anne! (although, this is not "all about Bob" at all now). I hadn't heard of him before but it's great. I'll be visiting itunes when I get home...

Carol, I always like introducing people to Jim's music. He is an extraordinary man, unparalleled songwriter/composer and a darn nice guy on top of it all. With Jim, what you see is what you get. If you ever go to St. John's, you can often find him at Erin's Pub after 11 PM. If you do, tell him I said Hi! Anne

I dream of mine for sure, but chances of getting out of province are slim, and with two little ones in tow, being out after 11 isn't likely either....Still fodder for dreaming! Sorry folks! back to Bob...

Bringing it back to Bob -
That was from the CD release show at CTV on Canada AM. I had the privelege to be invited and Michelle and Andi were nice enough to accompany me. See the account of the very exclusive show on my website. Wow! That was a little over a year ago! We had a great time, too. Anne

Well, Anne, I'm putting my lack of productivity squarely on your shoulders! I loved the write-up you have of the CTV show last summer but I teach through the summer term and somehow I still have a stack of grammar tests and paragraphs to mark as well as lesson plans to finish for next week. I love your links but they are way too inviting. We should have met at Trace's last weekend. Next time you're planning a road trip this way let me know!
