You miss the last few hours of class to drive up to Seattle so you can go see Chris Trapper, who you only knew was playing because some kind soul posted it in a thread on the OKP which you check daily.

When you listen to all Great Big Sea songs throughout labor and delivery of your child. :)

when you start listening to other music because if you ever found yourself in conversation with anyone from the band (not bloody likely) for any length of time (even less likely) you have a feeling you'd be more interesting to them if you knew more about music than just their recordings.

I learned more about NL too, not just because of them, though, but also because, as part of a regionally diverse country, I think we tend to lose track of how different other Canadians can be.  And because I don't really know what my own 'regionality' is and am very jealous of their sense of identity and history...And I think I'd be more interesting to talk to if I could speak on these subjects should the increasingly bad odds of a chance encounter provide opportunity. It's sad to prepare for a fantasy, it would be simpler just to pretend I already know all this stuff.

...when you practice just nodding with a wink, saying "what are y' at?" Confession of a hopeless groupie? Definitely.

..when you manipulate the guests in the café where you work by subjecting ( that's what my boss calls it!) them to 24/7 Great Big Sea.And when someone asks who that is you rattle off a 10-minute defense speech (oh to have powerpoint!) on the virtues, origins, attractiveness of you favourite band. most people are impressed, some even convert ( they mostly turn out to be shantyadmirers, mmh, maybe my account is a little biased in that regard), but only one has asked me to turn 'that stuff' down a bit, please.

... when you indoctrinate your friends' children without even knowing it .... they listen to GBS in your car all the time (that's what they get for carpooling so much). They know the words to Donkey Riding, Process Man, Walk on the Moon, When I Am King, etc. They spend the weekend in Quebec and manage to i.d. Great Big Sea on the radio more than one and they're correct. Their parents are dumbfounded. When they return, your friend asks, "So this band that you like from ...where is it again? Labrador? You must listen to them a lot ...." You laugh at the story and high-five the 12-year-old and make a mental note to give that girl a cd of her own on her next birthday ...
