Re: I'M GOING TO NFLD! Help!

I guess there are as many opinions about good fish & chips places as there are tourists. Smile I have eaten Leo's, Ches's and The Big R's and prefer the Big R's hands down. *shrugs* so I guess Amanda should try them all!

Re: I'M GOING TO NFLD! Help!

I had Ches' and I didn't really care for it. I wanted to try Leo's, but I wasn't gonna eat fish and chips for two meals in a row. That's whay I gotta go back. Wink

I found everything to taste a little blah, except for the recurrent flavour of Cod in all the food. We didn't realize they cook the fish and the fries in the same oil, and my dad is allergic to sea food. *L* Make the allergie alerts more visable!

    Well I can't say I have had Leo's but I have had Big R's and I still enjoy Ches's.

But I bet you all agree that Mary does have the best legs in Town and her breast aren't too bad either. OMG Can you pack me up and send to over I drool at the thought.

OK, this really scared me. Now I feel compelled to hit up every single fish n' chips place in St. John's the next time I go in order to find out just which place has the greasiest. Wink

I vote for Leo's, no doubt here!

Nautical Nellie's is also very good when you dont care about dressing and gravy!

wow, note to self, get fish and chips when I get to St. John's! Ok, what's up with the dressing and gravy?! HUH? Here, we eat fish and chips with ketchup for both, malt vinegar for fries and/or fish, tartar sauce for the fish, or some combination of those. What is this magical dressing and gravy?

    Dressing is stuffing...

And the first time I went to Leo's I ordered but never mentioned anything about gravy and dressing. It did not register in my brain that it would go well together.

She came back with my plate and I was almost grossed out. Okay, I was... But decided to taste anyway.

I will never eat Fish and Chip without it, it is delicious!

To get more specific it's bread crumbs with savoury (kind of like sage). When my mother makes it she puts onion in it as well. We like our carbs out here. Wink

We took our second trip to Nfld in August. This time we didn't even rent a car. We spent ten days in St. John's and did most of it on foot (occasionally taking a taxi or bus). I've built a photo album from the trip and it may give you an idea of things to do in St. John's:

Re: I'M GOING TO NFLD! Help!

I'm surprised noone's mentioned it (or I might've missed it) but go to Trapper John's and get Screeched in! I was there in April and my friend and I both got screeched in there, it's pretty cool. Try to go on a night when there's a lot of people though, it'd be much more fun and you'll make a lot of fast friends.

Definitely do Signal Hill and Cape Spear. Bring an extra-warm winter jacket for Cape Spear, the wind gets somethin' fierce out there.

My favourite thing though, you can't really do... my dad's family is out there and they have kitchen parties whenever we visit (I've lived in Ontario until recently, and am now in BC). But if you can make some quick friends and get one of them to invite you, there's nothing in the world better than a good kitchen party, family sitting around playin music/singing songs, drinking, just... everything.

Re: I'M GOING TO NFLD! Help!

I would LOVE nothing more than to find myself at a kitchen party during this trip!

I really want to go to Cape Spear, but I'm sans wheels...anyone want to take a ride out there? Big Grin

2 weeks and a day until I leave...but who's counting, really? Smile God, I've got to start organizing!!!!

Re: I'M GOING TO NFLD! Help!

Cape Spear is awesome, but stay away from the shoreline. Two tourists in the past six weeks ignored signs that say stay on the trails, went to the shoreline and waves carried them off, and you will die very quickly in that cold rough water. The first person's body was found a couple of weeks after he was swept away, the second, who was lost yesterday, the search for his body is still on right now.
There is no beach, just rocks and waves. You'll be safe if you stay where you are supposed to. It looks just as lovely from the trails as it would up close.

Ontario man washed away at Cape Spear

    CBC News
An Ontario man is missing and presumed dead after being washed from the rocks at Cape Spear on Sunday afternoon.

The man, who was in his 40s, was taking pictures with two companions when he was hit by a wave.

RNC Staff Sgt. June Layden says Coast Guard ships and fast rescue craft were on the scene quickly.

Three helicopters ' from the Coast Guard, the Armed Forces and a private company ' also joined the search.

However, by nightfall, searchers had given up hope of finding the man alive.

They spent the night watching the shoreline, hoping to recover his body.

The man is the second tourist washed from Cape Spear this autumn.

In September, Connecticut resident Daniel Kulp, 25, was drowned while sightseeing with friends.

Cape Spear National Park ' at the most easterly point in North America ' is a popular tourist attraction.

Signs instruct visitors to not approach coastlines directly, because of risks posed by waves that crash ashore.

However, there are few obstructions to curious visitors who want to get closer to the coastline.

    Mmmmm, Leo's...

And I second the Signal Hill idea too. I walked up and down and around it a lot when I was in St. John's last summer. Yeah, I'm crazy, but it was a nice hike. The view is wicked. I love just sitting there and staring out to where the sky and ocean meet.

I personally think the screeching in thing is way too touristy, but if you're gonna be a tourist and don't mind acting like it, then go for it.

LESS THAN A WEEK TIL I LEAVE FOR ST. JOHN'S! SQUEEEE!

Thank you for the warning, Futon. That's really scary! I will definitely stay on the trails...hopefully I can actually make it to Cape Spear.

I'm hoping I can manage to haul my fat arse all the way up Signal Hill, Buff. Razz I'm pretty determined though. Smile I've had screech before...I think once was enough. Razz Actually, it wasn't all that bad, I'm just more of a beer person than a liquor person.
